UK Outlook for Friday 4 Jan 2013 to Sunday 13 Jan 2013:

A quieter and drier spell of weather is expected through this outlook period, especially in the south where the ground is fairly saturated, although there will probably be a good deal of cloud across the UK. Over northern and some western parts, the cloud is likely to be thick enough for occasional spells of rain, perhaps even some heavier rain at times for western Scotland. Elsewhere, conditions will be largely dry, with the best of any breaks tending to be to the lee of higher ground. Also a risk of mist or fog patches where any cloud breaks occur overnight. Perhaps some rain extending further southeast around the middle of the period, but only small amounts. Daytime temperatures will generally be above average and nights largely mild and frost free.

UK Outlook for Saturday 5 Jan 2013 to Monday 14 Jan 2013:

A quieter and drier spell of weather is expected through this outlook period, especially in the south, although the UK will often be rather cloudy. Over northern and some western parts, the cloud is likely to be thick enough for occasional rain, with some heavier bursts and strong winds at times for western Scotland. Elsewhere conditions will be largely dry, with the best of any cloud breaks tending to be to the lee of higher ground, giving a risk of fog patches where any cloud breaks occur overnight. Some rain may reach the southeast at times, but only in small amounts. Temperatures will initially be above average with nights also frost-free, although frosts may start to return to the south and east as temperatures fall nearer-normal later in the period.

UK Outlook for Sunday 6 Jan 2013 to Tuesday 15 Jan 2013:

An area of rain looks to affect much of the UK for a time on Sunday, although southeastern areas may escape this and remain mainly dry. Thereafter, on the whole, a fairly quiet spell of weather for the UK during this period. Generally a good deal of cloud around, with this thick enough at times to produce some light rain or drizzle, particularly around coasts and hills in the north and west, where also windy at times. Elsewhere, some cloud breaks developing, with best of the sunshine likely to the lee of high ground, although with the risk of mist and fog developing overnight. Generally mild at first, but becoming a little colder with time, particularly in the north, where showery conditions may return towards the end of the period.

UK Outlook for Monday 7 Jan 2013 to Wednesday 16 Jan 2013:

It looks likely that rain will affect all parts for a time on Monday and into Tuesday. The heaviest of this is will be across northwestern areas, but only small amounts are expected across southeast Britain. Thereafter, relatively quiet conditions look to dominate the UK, with a good deal of fine and dry weather on offer, and any rain or showers probably confined to the north and northwest, where strong winds are also quite likely. Mild at first, but temperatures are likely to fall close to average by midweek, with a risk of some overnight frost at times. Towards mid month, a trend towards rather more unsettled conditions is anticipated, with spells of rain becoming heavier and more frequent, as well as extending further south.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 8 Jan 2013 to Thursday 17 Jan 2013:

Cloudy, mild conditions are likely at first with many parts seeing rain or drizzle. The heaviest of this is will be across northwestern areas, but eastern UK may receive only small amounts of rain. Later next week, more average temperatures are expected with northern and western regions remaining changeable with spells of rain, perhaps heavy, alternating with brighter showery periods and strong winds at times. Further south and east, overall there will be drier conditions with bright spells by day, clear intervals and fog patches possible overnight and a greater chance of frost than of late as temperatures fall to near or even a little below normal. Although drier, the south and east may see occasional cloudier periods with outbreaks of rain, the frequency of which may increase towards mid-month.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 9 Jan 2013 to Friday 18 Jan 2013:

Rain will clear the far southeast early Wednesday, leaving most parts dry with mix of cloud and sunshine, and overnight fog patches. However thicker cloud and spells of rain will spread into western and northern parts towards the end of the week, and may perhaps extend further southeast at times. Temperatures are expected to be generally around normal with a risk of overnight frosts, but perhaps turning occasionally milder in the west in the more unsettled conditions. Little change into the weekend with an east-west split expected, with western areas seeing further cloud, wind and rain, and eastern areas staying largely dry with an increased chance of frost and fog. From then on, it remains very uncertain but a probability of a trend to colder conditions is increasing.

UK Outlook for Thursday 10 Jan 2013 to Saturday 19 Jan 2013:

Mostly dry across eastern parts during the end of next week with mix of cloud and sunshine, and overnight fog patches. However thicker cloud and spells of rain will spread into western and southern parts, and this may extend eastwards. Temperatures are expected to be generally around normal with a risk of overnight frosts, but perhaps turning occasionally milder in the west in the more unsettled conditions. The unsettled conditions are then expected to transfer eastwards during Saturday before mostly dry and bright conditions move across all parts by Sunday. Temperatures are expected to fall a little below normal with an increase chance of frost and fog. From then on, it remains very uncertain but with an increasing probability of a trend to colder conditions.

UK Outlook for Friday 11 Jan 2013 to Sunday 20 Jan 2013:

Cloudy with outbreaks of rain in the south on Friday. Elsewhere, a good deal of dry weather initially, but showers developing near coasts in the northeast and perhaps spreading further inland with time. Showers mostly rain at first, but turning increasingly wintry into next weekend, with snow possible over high ground. Temperatures near average in the south, rather cold in the north and trending colder, with frost becoming more widespread. Into next week, most likely to remain cold with further wintry showers, especially in central and eastern parts, but also a good deal of fine, dry weather with overnight frost. Perhaps less cold in western parts later. Thereafter very uncertain, but most likely to remain colder than average.

I think that`s quite a reasoned outlook as the pattern for cold will still be at an early stage during that period-with surface details still to be pinned down.

UK Outlook for Saturday 12 Jan 2013 to Monday 21 Jan 2013:

Cloudy with outbreaks of rain in many areas on Saturday. The best of any drier weather towards the northwest. Drier and brighter for many central and western areas on Sunday, but showers in the east will turn increasingly wintry, with snow snow possible over hills. Temperatures near or a little below normal, with frost becoming more widespread, and some fog or freezing fog patches, which could be slow to clear during the day. Through next week, most likely to remain cold with further wintry showers, especially in northern, central and eastern parts, but also a good deal of dry and sunny weather, with overnight frost and fog. However, there could be some rain, and milder interludes towards the west. Thereafter very uncertain, but most likely to remain colder than average.

"Thereafter very uncertain, but most likely to remain colder than average."

The phrase very uncertain shows why nobody should just jump to a conlusion and take each chart for gospel as even the Met Office don't have a clue what will be the effects of this SSW. Having said that, the latter part of the sentence suggests they expect the SSW to have a positive impact in terms of cold and snow. :)

UK Outlook for Sunday 13 Jan 2013 to Tuesday 22 Jan 2013:

Current indications are for mainly dry, settled and cold conditions in most places on Sunday and Monday, with overnight frosts and perhaps some freezing fog patches, which could linger through the day in places. There may be showers in the east, turning increasingly wintry, with snow possible over hills. The far north and northwest may be cloudier, with rain or snow possible here later. Through next week, it is most likely to remain cold with further wintry showers, especially in northern, central and eastern parts, but also a good deal of dry and sunny weather, with overnight frost and fog. Towards the end of the period more unsettled spells of weather may spread from the west at times, with outbreaks of rain and milder temperatures possible.

The latter bit should get upgraded within the next few days and read milder weather towards the SW and the threat of wintry weather further North, or something like that one hopes.

After reading Ian F latest post in the MOD, they are at presently leaning towards the ECM. So for the short / medium term the above looks highly likely.

Clear sign of intent from the METO, sounds to me like they are backing their own model with regards to snow showers midweek onwards. Clearly don't favour the GFS SW track ENE.

I like the certainty they say it with 'It WILL be'

UK Outlook for Wednesday 16 Jan 2013 to Friday 25 Jan 2013:

It should remain cold across many parts of the UK, with a good deal of dry and frosty weather, especially for central areas, but there will be some wintry showers and persistent rain, sleet and snow to watch out for on occasion. The detail of where the snow is most likely to be is currently uncertain at this time. At the moment, scattered snow showers look most likely to affect eastern parts of the UK with a risk of some significant snowfall here, whilst occasional periods of persistent rain and milder conditions may fringe into western areas, but turning to snow as it runs into the cold air. An ongoing risk of icy stretches overnight, and freezing fog may also be an issue during the cold and clearer nights.
