Personally I don't know what is wrong with the above meto update, to me it says mostly cold :-)

Cold at first yes i agree but with the met favoring milder interludes at times and attacks from the south west it suggests that the cold air cannot really get a firm foothold and become established which may have lead to more parts of the uk with chances of snow and not just the northern and north eastern districts. Still plenty of time for things to change for the better but uninspiring comes to mind.

well that should throw the model thread into deep despair, not that some are that far off already.

Why? Because it doesn't mention raging blizzards with drifting snow? The problem is the 'despairing' members of the model thread would be better off posting in a snow thread. The update says cold for the most of the uk and no surprise of milder in the far south and southwest because this is par for the course anyway. But you are right! I can see them devouring the prozac. :)

UK Outlook for Monday 10 Dec 2012 to Wednesday 19 Dec 2012:

Through Monday, a band of rain is expected to affect central parts of the UK, edging south through Tuesday before dying out. Elsewhere, clearer conditions are expected on both days with sunny spells by day but some wintry showers affecting the north east. It will stay cold with widespread overnight frost and freezing fog in places. Thereafter, there is a greater level of uncertainty but wintry showers are possible in all areas, particularly the north and east, with perhaps some significant snow falls over eastern hills. Between these showers, it should be drier with some sunny spells. It is likely to remain cold, with widespread overnight frost and icy patches, and perhaps some freezing fog. There may, however, be some milder but wetter interludes towards the south and west.

In other words, the slider low moving SE by end of Monday but then the speed with which the Easterly starts is as yet unknown. Fair enough, and accurate I would say

If i was the met office i would change that and the focus of the cold & wintry weather being southern and eastern areas if its a easterly pattern they are going for. The main signs at this moment is for either a easterly or south easterly airflow which will favor east and the south east.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 11 Dec 2012 to Thursday 20 Dec 2012:

Cold weather is likely to continue during the middle of December, with temperatures generally significantly colder than normal for the time of year. Most areas should see plenty of fine, dry and sunny weather, although there is a risk of wintry showers. These are most likely to affect eastern areas at first, but they could become more widespread later in the forecast period, potentially reaching all parts of the UK. There will be widespread overnight frosts, and with these there is a risk of ice forming, especially around showers. There is also a risk of freezing fog forming in some places. Although the UK outlook is for generally cold conditions to dominate, there are some indications of milder, wetter weather affecting some western and southwestern areas at times.

Without being IMBY, that looks like a good improvement to me.

Temperatures significantly below average. Wintry showers becoming more widespread later in the forecast period, which suggests the easterly flow will hang around for a while.

Not bad at all.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 12 Dec 2012 to Friday 21 Dec 2012:

Most indications suggest that the start of the period will be cold across all areas, with temperatures generally significantly below average. There should be some dry weather, but showers are possible almost anywhere in the UK. These may be a wintry mix of sleet and hail on windward coasts, but are likely to fall as snow anywhere inland. Widespread overnight frosts are likely, with a risk of ice and freezing fog in places. Although details are very uncertain, there are signs that less cold air will try to spread in from the southwest from the middle of the month. This may bring outbreaks of rain to some areas, and potentially some persistent snowfall where this rain meets the cold air already in place across the UK.

UK Outlook for Thursday 13 Dec 2012 to Saturday 22 Dec 2012:

Southern, eastern and some central areas are likely to see a continuation of mostly sunny conditions through Thursday but staying cold with overnight frost and wintry showers in places. Elsewhere, the weather is expected to turn more unsettled but less cold, with these conditions edging north and east through Friday. This could give significant snowfall in places at first, particularly over hills. Winds will be initially light but it will turn windier from the southwest. Through the remainder of the period, it is likely to remain unsettled and windy in all areas with outbreaks of rain, heaviest in the south west. Temperatures are expected to be close to or just below the seasonal average with a continued risk of snow in places, mainly on higher ground from the midlands northwards.

All I can say at this stage is 'better luck for January' because currently it looks like we will miss the boat for deep cold in December. At least it's December 8th and not February 8th though! Still very disappointing.....and continuing flooding issues for some!

UK Outlook for Friday 14 Dec 2012 to Sunday 23 Dec 2012:

Through Friday and Saturday, a transition to milder and unsettled conditions is expected across the UK. Rain, locally heavy, will spread into South West England and then move north east across the country. The rain may be preceded by a period of snow, particularly across higher ground of Northern England and Scotland. Clearer but showery conditions will follow into the west. Becoming windy with a risk of gales in places. After a cold start across the north and east, temperatures will recover closer to average across all parts. Staying unsettled through the remainder of the period with rainbands crossing the UK, turning clearer but showery in between. Temperatures will be close to the seasonal average, milder at times in the south, but there may be overnight frost in clearer spells.

No possibility, probably or maybe in this forecast. So a sure sign of a high confidence from Met Office HQ of the cold being pushed away completely by this time next week. Personally, I think the cold block will put up more of a fight, but as always time will tell.

UK Outlook for Saturday 15 Dec 2012 to Monday 24 Dec 2012:

Unsettled conditions should have spread to affect most the UK into the first weekend, with temperatures widely recovering to near-normal for the time of year. The rain may be preceded by a period of snow, mainly across higher ground of Scotland with the colder conditions starting the period here. Otherwise, occasionally heavy rain will follow into southwest England before moving northeast across the country, leaving clearer, windier and showery conditions, particularly affecting the west, with a risk of gales in places. Conditions should then stay unsettled through the remainder of the period, with rainbands crossing the UK, turning clearer but showery in between. Temperatures will be close to the seasonal average, perhaps even mild at times in the south, but there may still be overnight frost in clearer spells.

UK Outlook for Sunday 16 Dec 2012 to Tuesday 25 Dec 2012:

Largely unsettled across the UK this weekend and through next week. Western and southwestern parts are likely to see the heaviest and most frequent showers to begin with, whilst some northeastern parts can expect to escape many of the showers on Sunday and Monday. Some more persistent and much more widespread rain is then expected for a time during the middle of next week, before showery conditions and some brighter spells return. Milder than of late this week and at first next week, then perhaps turning a little colder in the north later next week. Later in the period, conditions are most likely to remain on the unsettled, changeable side with little sign of the current colder, settled weather returning.
