UK Outlook for Saturday 7 Jan 2012 to Monday 16 Jan 2012:

Largely unsettled weather is expected to persist across many regions until at least the middle of January, conditions changeable and often quite windy with showers or longer spells of rain. Some heavy rain likely at times to the northwest where occasional gales are also possible. Some hill snow is likely at times over Scotland whilst showers over other northern areas may turn wintry at times. Southern parts of the UK are likely to become a little more settled than of late next week with some longer dry interludes on the cards but then also an increased risk of overnight and morning fog patches. Despite daytime temperatures often being near or above average, there will still be a risk of overnight frost during more settled interludes.

UK Outlook for Sunday 8 Jan 2012 to Tuesday 17 Jan 2012:

Unsettled and often windy across northern and western parts, with gales or perhaps severe gales at times, coupled with showers or longer spells of rain, especially affecting the northwest. The showers will be wintry with some snow at times over Scottish high ground. Elsewhere, whilst there is likely to be some rain at times, there will also be a good deal of dry weather, increasingly so in the south. By mid-January, a north-south split looks favoured, with northern and particularly northwestern parts staying rather windy and unsettled. By contrast, southern parts of Britain will probably be drier and more settled, but also see an increased risk of fog patches. Despite daytime temperatures often being near or above-average, there will still be a risk of frost during more settled interludes.

UK Outlook for Monday 9 Jan 2012 to Wednesday 18 Jan 2012:

The week starts with outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, clearing away southeastwards, with drier and brighter weather following into most areas of the country. However more unsettled weather, with some wintry showers over high ground in Scotland, is likely in the north and northwest from Tuesday through to Friday. Southern areas will also see some rain or drizzle on occasion, but mainly be dry. Windy in the north. Daytime temperatures around average, with some frost overnight, and patchy fog in places in the south. The weekend and following week look to become milder in most areas with cloudy conditions and outbreaks of rain for all, most unsettled in the north and west. Occasional periods of brighter and colder weather are still likely at times.

UK Outlook for Friday 13 Jan 2012 to Sunday 22 Jan 2012:

The first part of the period, many central and eastern parts are likely to be dry with sunny/clear spells. Temperatures expected to be near or just below average, leading to overnight frost and fog. It is likely to be cloudier further west, with some light rain, perhaps becoming more persistent and heavier at times in the northwest. Temperatures here closer to average. Uncertainty increases towards the end of the period, with the most likely scenario for unsettled conditions to continue across western parts of the UK, especially in the northwest, perhaps spreading east at times. Settled conditions are likely to continue across eastern areas, especially towards the southeast with an ongoing risk of frost and fog. Temperatures generally near average, but rather cold at times in the east and southeast.

Seems strange - maybe the BBC forecaster is a mild ramper using old data and met office forecaster is a coldie using later data or vicer versa.

Getting better for coldies

UK Outlook for Sunday 15 Jan 2012 to Tuesday 24 Jan 2012:

There is considerable uncertainty during the first half of next week but it looks likely that eastern parts will start dry but cold with some sunshine. However western areas look set to start cloudy with outbreaks of rain. These are likely to spread erratically east, turning to sleet for a time, with some hill snow likely. Later in the week there is higher confidence that northern and especially northwestern parts of the UK will be mostly unsettled with these conditions perhaps spreading south and east at times. However most southern areas are likely to see more settled weather with an ongoing risk of overnight frost and fog. Temperatures generally near average, but rather cold at times in the east or southeast.

UK Outlook for Monday 16 Jan 2012 to Wednesday 25 Jan 2012:

It is likely to be a fine, settled but cold start to the period, with overnight and early morning frost as well as some stubborn freezing fog patches. A slow transition to milder, cloudier and more unsettled conditions from the west is then expected as spells of rain, preceded by some transient sleet or snow, spread east, although it is likely to take until mid-week to get to the far southeast. Conditions then likely to turn a little colder again late next week. Into the following weekend and the second week unsettled conditions are likely to persist, with spells of cloudy and relatively mild weather with periods of rain, interspersed by brighter but colder and showery spells with frosty nights, some of these showers wintry.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 17 Jan 2012 to Thursday 26 Jan 2012:

Cold and frosty as well as some stubborn freezing fog patches on Tuesday morning, but a slow transition to milder, cloudier and more unsettled conditions from the west is expected for the rest of Tuesday and for Wednesday. Spells of rain, preceded by some transient sleet or snow, spread east, although it is likely to take until mid-week to get to the far southeast. Conditions later next week and through the weekend then remaining unsettled but also turning colder with an increased risk of wintry showers, especially in the North and high ground. The unsettled theme then continues into the last week of January as spells of cloudy but relatively mild weather with periods of rain, interspersed by brighter but colder and showery spells with frosty nights affect the UK.

UK Outlook for Sunday 22 Jan 2012 to Tuesday 31 Jan 2012:

Sunday is likely to be chilly and windy, with a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers. Showers should be most frequent in the north, with snow on hills, whilst the south should remain driest. Similar conditions will likely persist through the following days, with further showers and some more persistent rain likely to affect many areas. Temperatures will probably be near average, occasionally mild, but with overnight frosts possible in any quieter interludes. There is considerable uncertainty regarding the weather during the last few days of January. The slightly more probable scenario at present is that conditions will remain similar to those described above. However there is also a significant risk of much colder weather becoming established right across the UK, with snow in places and widespread overnight frosts.
