Just for a bit of fun. What's your favourite type of weather and season?

Mods - I couldn't think of where else to put this? Please move if it's in the wrong section. Thanks. :wallbash:

It has to be Winter I love British Winters just the right mix of everything whether it be snow and frost, gales and storms or just the beautiful crisp sunny days where the sky is ice blue and the wind chill bitter. I am and always have been a big cold and snow lover and enjoy the excitement and buzz all the weather forums seem to have about them during Winter paticulary last year that saw the worst winter since the 90s with some decent snowfalls to watch I felt like a little kid again . Fingers crossed for a another very cold and snowy one this year!

Mine is Autumn I don't know why maybee its because its getting darker and its not quite cold yet but you still need that jumper. All the leaves are turning red and falling off the trees its such a pretty time of year winter doesn't seem that nice down here its mainly about 5c not that cold and grey and rainy but i like winter none the less last year was a good one with snow lying on the ground for about a week before christmas and another week in jan/feb. i want to move to somewhere like N.Wisconsin or N.Minnesota in the states as they get proper thunderstorms (minnesota has so far picked up the most tornadoes in any state this year) in the summer and in the winter they have a >90% (northern counties) chance of snow lying/falling on CHRISTMAS DAY!!!

Another reason i love autumn is Halloween i love it so much but around here i didnt even get one knock on my door last year :cray: at least all the sweets didn't go to waste me, my gf, my sister and her husband made sure of that! :whistling:

Heres a chart to show white christmas probability of atleast 1 inch lying on the ground in the Northern Mid-West (why do they call it mid west when its basically mid east?)

White Christmas Probability

Loving that chart. Wish I lived in the areas with more than 90% chance. :p

Autumn is nice, but usually snow wont last long on the ground because the sun is still pretty strong.

Summer by a clear mile. A sociable and fun time of year when outdoors becomes equal with indoors. A time to spend outdoors rather than cooped up inside day & night with any venturing outdoors requiring a lot of preparation. Summer a time of year when the daily routine of getting up, going to work and socialising is considerably more easier.

The result of this question always varies depending on the time of year it is asked. Late summer you'll find winter to be more popular but the other way around in late winter.

Summer for me first - especially when we have a good one which seems pretty rare in recent years - I love the long light evenings with a clear blue sky, when it is warm enough to sit outside.

Secondly, Spring - the days are getting longer amd sometimes we can get some really nice weather at times.

Thirdly - winter on the rare occasions we get nice dry snow coupled with bright sunshine days.

Lastly - autumn, except when we have an indian summer - the days are getting shorter - it is getting damper and the skies become greyer

Winter

Late Spring / Early Summer

Early Spring / Late Summer

Autumn

Sorry to do it this way, but during April, May and June, I start looking forward to summer, but as you go through summer into August, you start getting the downhill feeling, as the nights get shorter.

If done solely on season

Winter Summer Spring and Autumn

LOL!!

My favourite season will always be winter, even though I now qualify for my pension. :cc_confused:

As long as it is a very cold one that is. I hate the mild damp winters and think they should be abolished. Ah if only we had the power!

Adding onto what i said above i found some very good maps (not as specific) but there more clear and easier to read!

Map 1: >1 Inch Snow cover probability

fig2_whitexmas2.png

Map 2: >10 Inch snow cover probability (Mountainous Areas may have more but arn't shown)

fig6_whitexmas6.png

Heres a map showing covereage on the 25 December 2009 when 63% of the USA was covered by snow on christmas day!

You have obviously never experienced a Scottish "summer" :cc_confused:

Warm, muggy, cloudy and damp with a lot of midges.

You can ask me at any time of year and the answer will be the same, late autumn into winter is the best time of year.

You could have had fog as an option. I love fog, second only to snow. We had thick fog with heavy snow in the winter just passed. My eldest son (5 at the time) said when it happened: "Snow AND Fog. That should be called SNOG!".

I chose winter as my favourite season and snow as my favourite weather associated with Continental Polar or Maritime Polar air. However I don't mind spring, summer, autumn or winter if they either have cool sunshine and showers weather associated with Maritime Polar winds or beautiful crisp cool sunny weather associated with Maritime Polar or Continental Polar high pressure systems. Put another way I will hate all of our seasons if they are hot/mild with Maritime Tropical or Continental Tropical air!

Winter, Autumn, Summer, Spring.

For those who well know my meteorological preferences and are wondering why I would put Summer ahead of Spring; the reason is that by the time Summer arrives we are considerably closer to the next Winter than during Spring and also, once June 21st has passed the days are getting shorter, not longer.

Seasonal preferences: summer, spring, winter, autumn.

Summer and spring because of long hours of daylight, relatively high sunshine, chances of major convective events. I often find autumn & winter quite depressing due to darkness, but winter slightly beats autumn because it is more likely to have snow events.

Favourite type of weather is perhaps too specific to appear on the list: a mix of sunshine and convective precipitation (this applies as much to those "sunshine and snow showers" arctic/continental types as polar maritime air, or those warm thundery setups in summer).

I would certainly put spring ahead of autumn not only since spring means summer is coming and days are getting longer but also because the weather is more interesting. The contrast between the powerful sun & cold ground/sea makes for much more dynamic conditions despite being cooler overall. Autumn warmth is supplied by lingering energy stored in the ground/sea with an ever weakening sun which makes for much less variation and a more 'decay'. Spring feels much more energetic, fresh and alive.

Perhaps likened to a working week - Friday afternoon and evening is spring, the weekend proper is summer, Sunday night is autumn, and Monday morning is November and into winter!

My order would be: late spring/early to mid summer, mid summer to very early autumn, late winter-early/mid spring, mid winter, mid/late autumn-early winter.

Or in month order...

June, July, May, August, April, September, March, February/October, December, January/November.

I suppose it depends where you live too. In Scotland summer is all very well when it's a day like today but we do get weeks on end of utter rubbish weather at times. If summer could be warm, dry and sunny for an extended spell every year (like June this year) then I'd like it a lot more as a season than I currently do. The truth is that 17C and cloudy is often what we end up with and that is truely mind numbing for any weather enthusiast.

Autumn. Oh, those mornings......misty, beautiful leaf colour, ripe fruits and berries, the sun coming out and burning off the mist to leave a lovely golden-ness everywhere but without the vile Summer heat and humidity.......

....AND there is still the loveliness of Winter to look forward to, with the possibility of SNOW. :)

Truly, my cup runneth over in the Autumn. :p

Yes, I suppose people futher north in Scotland e.t.c would prefer winter as their summers are not as good.

Summer is by far my favourite season, it's the only time of the year where we are practically guaranteed 20C+ on basically every day down here. Autumn is my least favourite, I agree that it feels like the weather is just 'decaying' and with the nights drawing in it can be depressing. Spring is my second favourite, and winter is my 3rd favourite.

Just adding this, If I had the option, I would remove October, November and possibly March all together, then we would have a short winter and a longer warmer period.

Mine is Summer due to the fact I love hot and thundery weather as my favoruite weather has to be THUNDERSTORMS . Just can't beat a day where its hot and sticky and then during the evening and early darkness start to hear those distant deep low rumbles coming closer and closer, then it's neally over you knowing that your about to see a great lightning distant with explosive thunder, LOVE IT !!!

Winter is my second favourite due to the fact I love snow and its my 2nd favourite weather, but I also like when it goes extremely cold of a night time when temperatures get into the minuses and then you wake up to a beautiful crisp and frosty morning and it feels fresh :p.

Autumn and spring are about equal but Autumn is better by a little bit due to the fact I love Autumn gales and deep Atlantic depressions, also in Autumn we can get quite a lot of thunderstorms too off the sea as it pretty warmer than inland during Mid to late autumn I think but I have experienced loads of storms from September till December :D.

I like spring for the fact we can get heavy Thundery downpours come from the North sometimes during the April and May period and it can sometimes produce snow in early April like April 6th 2008 for example :).

So in order it goes like this Summer, Winter, Autumn and Spring.good.gif

My favourite part of the year is from May through to July, hence why summer is my favourite season by a mile. My ideal weather in Summer would be 22-24c, a light breeze and sunny spells and of course a long mild evening so i can be outside comfortably until sunset. I will admit to spending a large part of the year, usually between November and March, counting down the days until summer and the return of weather that allows you to get outside again. Yes, Winter for me is sometimes that painful. I also see summer as a very healthy time of year where you are able to go for walks, cycling or take part in sports without the weather getting in the way. Which is why this summer has been so good here. A prolonged heatwave like 2003 would have been the icing on the cake but maybe next year.

Next comes Spring as for me it signals rebirth of the countryside after the long dark winter and everything starts growing again. The gradually lenghening daylight hours are great as i find i can fit much more into the evening than in Winter. Early Spring can be frustrating as it can often take a while to get going which is why i would despise a repeat of 1996 where Spring only got going in April, and then stalled once we got into May. Early warm spells in March are always welcome as there is something special about the first day of the winter where the breeze has some added warmth.

Winter doesnt facinate me as much as it does some. I like snow and really enjoyed last year around new year, but last February really is a great example of why i generally dislike winter. Endless days between 4-6c and slate grey skies leaving everywhere dirty and mucky as theres so sun to dry things out. Winter is a very unhealthy time of year too where many means of excercies cease to become enjoyable hence why people often put on weight during the winter months as there nothing much else to do other than sit inside eating and watching TV. Cycling in anything under 10c is not pleasant and jogging with ice on the road isnt nice either. I would like a sunny and mild winter this year so it isnt quite as unpleasant being outside. A spell of severe cold and snow in December/New Year would be welcome before i turn my attention to Spring.

Autumn is my least favourite as basically its the lead up to Winter and its the time of year when you've got to wait the longest till summer. September can be pleasant with the early mist burning off to leave a day of sunshine and warmth but by mid October all hope of some pleasant warmth has gone so its all downhill from there.

As a whole

winter 1st

summer 2nd

spring 3rd

autumn 4th

My two favourite periods of the year weather wise are late spring-early summer usually from about mid May through to early July and also late oct-early nov which is a period of great turmoil with usually the first proper storms of the winter season and the first air frosts and snow on the fells.

Can't beat a lovely early summery spell in May just like what happened this year or a cold snowy period from around mid Dec lasting through christmas and into new year again as happened last winter. May and December are my two favourite months in general so when the weather is playing ball all the better.

Least interesting month by a long chalk is September - yes it can be pleasant but it is often so benign and non-descript. Early-mid oct can suffer such vagaries as well.

Most interesting month is April - when the weather is at its most unpredictable.

Most miserable at least when we don't get early snowfall or an early cold spell is November.

Potentially the best months are January and July for extreme cold and heat if you like that sort of thing.

4) Spring

Love winter but it is followed very closely behind by summer. I love the sunny days and heat, but winter is better. Crisp evenings and mornings. Snowfall and cold temperatures!
