many people dont know there is any threat of a solar flare or ,that anything like it could occur, of course it would worry us if it was tommorow ,but we do need to know the risks and have back up plans for when it happens, in simple thinking cave man wouldnt notice a thing! so thats the point , we need to be aware of what to do when we are without the things that we need most.

interesting views on here.

Thanks for that Nimbilus! This is the thing some folk don't seem to cotton onto. They give you the "it's all happened before....." spiel but forget that 6 or so generations ago we all had access to water (wells and rivers), however insanitary, and access to food stuffs.

Once we start to specialise in our labour and 'buy' the necessities in life we become prone to unnecessary death due to lack of the ability to service our basic needs. We can go 3 or so days without water and 20 odd days without food......it doesn't matter how healthy you are if you sell you're skills as a 'telemarketer' to earn the dosh for food/water then if the access to them is removed (even if you have the dosh for them) you're stuffed.

In the U.S. the govt. advises folk to carry 2 weeks of dry food/water (and batteries/meds/vitamins) " just in case".........how many folk in the UK 'insure' themselves in this way?

Ah scare season time. Strange we've survived all this time despite these storms happening. There's something in the human spirit that loves a good scare story be it Global warming, Bird Flue, Swine Flu etc.

Rest easy folks unless you get hit by a bus we're still likely to be discussing this in years too come.

You mean there'll be buses coming from the solar storms too??!!!!

"we're all DOOOOOOMED!"

(Bet there'll be three of them...you seem to wait forever and then three always come along at once :D )

Hi Pit,

Good introduction on how the Geomagnetic storm causes problems with Transformers here, OK, it's Wikipedia, but it's a start. And you are right, it's the length of the cabling creates larger induced currents

Thanks for the link it also seems that the effects have been considered and planned for (Possibly) so the effects may not be as bad as the worst case scenario. However as some have pointed out as we become more dependant on technology the more vulnerable we become. The ever increasing population also means we get more vulnerable.

We're right to consider it as an eventuality even if it never happens. Why do folk take out insurance? cause it will happen or might happen?

Better to spend a few hours giving yourself an edge on the situation than sit on yer fat butt doing diddly.

Oh I totally agree. There's just no need for the scaremongering though is there? Facts are a good thing.

Even with a freezer getting run down for defrosting there is more than enough food in my house to keep me and my family alive for weeks; assuming we have water and fire. I'm not a food hoarder but I know there's plenty of scope to improvise.

This is nothing new. I have been following the videos on youtube about 21st Dec 2012 and many have commented on a solar storm for many yrs. The video below was posted 1yr ago!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-IxkwLx-6c

I know some of you are going to say the rumours about 2012 are rubbish. However when you consider some of the videos posted many yrs ago have proved to be accurate i.e increase in earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and now this NASA article, I find myself rather concerned.

Let me put it this way I still don't really believe these 2012 rumours. However the more I read the more I will be glad when 11.11am on the 21st Dec 2012 has passed without incident!!

Apart from scare sites I haven't seen any links to increased earthquake activity or volcanic activity. Got a link???

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
