Sea Surface Temperatures

Hi

I've been keeping my eye on the North Sea surface temperatures for the last week now on the BOSS4GMES site(http://project.ncof....p?indicator=sst ) and up until the 6th of December there appeared to be cooling of the North Sea then the temperatures have shot up.

What could be causing the temperatures to rise so rapidly?

Possibly the snow that fell on the channel and North Sea did cool the SSTs a little in the short term, but the scale change certainly makes it look dramatic. Certainly a lot of precipitation just missed the south coast travelling westwards. It's an interesting website though, Spawney, but where did you obtain the animation - I can't find it?

Some charts from the same site:

The SST anomaly for this area shows a definite downward trend over the last few years, and we have already beaten the low set earlier this year:

As does the heat content time series:

It's a very short time series, but the spring heat content has been steadily decreasing over the past 3 seasons. Autumn heat content held up until last year, but this year is decreasing too. is this a sign of things to come?

It's not an official animation, I'm curious to see how the surface temp changes throughout this coming winter so I knocked up the animation from the daily images to get a better idea of how the North Sea is cooling. I'll be adding more frames to it so eventually I'll have the entire winter's changes animated.

Massive drop in SSTs over the last 24 hours, look at the North Yorkshire and Teeside coast line and running up toward eastern scotland as well. Even the Atlantic to the West of Scotland has seen a big gain. The Baltic sea is nearly frozen, give it another week. Atlantic south of Southampton has cooled off a touch as well.

Still another 2.5C to shave off before last January's SST observed temperature of 5C. I would have at a guess that this next cold spell has the potential to drop another 1C plus a shade more of SSTs in the North Sea.

.....The Baltic sea is nearly frozen, give it another week......

Sorry, but that's not really right. The main part of the Baltic very rarely freezes away from the edges and islands, and there's little ice there yet, it's far too early in the season - the surface temp over much of it is still above +6C.

If you're referring only to the northernmost section, the Gulf of Bothnia, then that will freeze in due course (as it generally does). But it's a long way off that as yet (though ahead of normal), and certainly not "nearly frozen" - a large part is still above +3C. For the up-to-date situation see here http://www.itameriportaali.fi/html/icef/icemap_c.pdf (updated 15 Dec) and here http://www.itameriportaali.fi/en/itamerinyt/en_GB/jaatilanne/#middle (updated 13 Dec)

@osmposm

Yes, I was commenting on the Kattegatt region which I am sure can be safely and vaguely classed as part of the Baltic Sea. Ofc the word 'nearly' can be interpreted in many ways. 1C is nearly 0C - by frozen I don't mean landlocked. Both the Kattegatt region and the Gulf of Bothnia seem to be popular spots for freezing waters during winters.

I don't disagree with your summary by the way, I can see you have just looked at it more detail than I. :)

In my years of watching weather on the Web I have not seen the current North Atlantic/Gulf-of-Mexico SSTA pattern, particularly in mid-winter.

I wonder if the experts among us would care to venture what effects this pattern may have down the line?

Are these unusual patterns simply driven by the current synoptics or are they the drivers?

Anomalies are looking very low now around the uk, particularly in the north sea. Don't think I've ever seen them this below average before!

I'm no expert at this, but doesn't the anomaly chart indicate that the conditions are favourable for high pressure over greenland. I certainly can't see much of a jet stream forming with such a low differential between warm and cold water (i.e. negative anomaly in south, positive in north).

Its almost like la nina water has spread into the atlantic through the panama canal lol!

I like tracking the cooling temps with that link.

Will you be updating throughout the winter?

Aye, I will be. Missed a few days what with Xmas and all that. Hope to be back on course tomorrow.

Yes and look how cold it is where the gulf stream is? No wonder with waters below average there, even with the onslaught of the gulf stream and an enpowering jet, it will be cooler than average due to the anomalies further south. Really does make one wonder when all t hose claims on the slow death of the gulf stream were laughed off, it's uncanny how it's certainly panning out that way currently.

Does that have a key?

Wouldn't mind seeing what temperature the Irish Sea is at. It's dark blue but no colour codes indicating the temperature.

Here's a quick animation made from the unisys sst anomaly charts, tis a little over 2mb so may take a few moments to load.

Thanks for that.

Really interested to see where we go from here with the Atlantic sea temps, only really the last few weeks it gets very interesting. Starting to look like the Atlantic wants its own version of la Nina!
