Lots of smaller quakes since that M4.7.

Interestingly the number of earthquakes in the last 48 hours continues to rise, now over 2100

Some stronger earthquakes started once again (around the M3 - 3.5 mark).

Chances of eruption increase as seismic activity drags on

The longer that the seismic activity under Bárðarbunga goes on, the greater the risk of an eruption, according to Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson, geophysicist and Professor at the University of Iceland. The authorities are acting on two key phrases: There are no signs of the magma reaching the surface, and that the seismic activity is still very powerful.

Scientists differ on how to interpret several large quakes from Thursday that originated in the center of the Bárðarbunga caldera. While some scientists claim that this means that the pressure is lowering, others claim the exact opposite.

Scientists met today at the Institution of Earth Sciences in Iceland to compare notes and try to determine the chances of an eruption.

"It's still likely to end in an eruption, and those odds haven't lowered in any way," states Magnús Tumi. "The longer that this takes place, the greater the chances of something happening. But I don't think that the odds are favoring an eruption, but then again it's all guesswork," he adds.

Scientists believe they have a rough idea about what's been happening under Vatnajökull glacier for the past week, that magma is flowing from under the Bárðarbunga caldera to the northeast towards Dyngjujökull glacier, where the magma is forming a 25 kilometer long underground cavern at a depth of 5 to 10 kilometers. Looking at the 3D model that the The Icelandic Meteorological Office has constructed of the seismic events, one can see the cavern's location.

Scientists disagree on how to interpret large quakes that took place in the Bárðarbunga caldera last night and this morning.

Kristín Vogfjörð, research director for the Icelandic Meteorological Office, claims that according to GPS data the pressure in the caldera is lowering.

But Ingi Þorleifur Bjarnason, seismologist and geophysicist at the Institution of Earth Sciences, interprets the quakes differently: That the pressure is increasing and the mountain is rising, more magma is entering the caldera.

i reckon no-one really knows what happens next :cc_confused:

Well the patterns seems to be concentrating in two areas now looking at the map. So those are likely areas for the eruption if any.

i expect quakes to pick up again now

Posted Image

it looks looks like the bigger quakes are closer to baroarbunga which is where i am looking now

i honestly think now its a watch and see what happens with this as even the experts seem to disagree

also  expect confusion with the quakes . this is moving so quick, getting these approved must be a nightmare at present

That one showed up on the USGS as a 4.3. Something odd going on when it looks bigger than the one later which is checked at 3.5.

Any reason for apparent discrepancy?

hi gael

i personally think theres so many quakes at present we will see these differences

probably all match up to each other in a couple of days

note the bottom bit

Volcanoes Today, 22 Aug 2014: Ubinas volcano, Fuego

Friday Aug 22, 2014 18:00 PM |
Posted Image
Powerful vulcanian explosion at Ubinas yesterday

Fuego (Guatemala): Explosive activity has been relatively high recently. Individual eruptions have been producing ash plumes that rose to up to 1 km and incandescent material was seen rising 150-200 m above the crater.

Shock waves often accompany the stronger explosions. There is no lava flow currently.

Ubinas (Peru): After a being relatively since the end of July, a powerful explosion occurred suddenly at the volcano yesterday afternoon at 15:36 local time.

The explosion ejected blocks to up to 2 km distance and produced an ash plume that rose to approx. 7-8 km altitude.

The eruption was likely a vulcanian-type event, i.e. caused by the sudden release of pressure as viscous (sticky) and gas-rich magma had accumulated beneath a solid plug in the vent. It shows that the eruptive phase at the volcano continues and is capable of producing extremely dangerous explosions.

looking at the flow there looks To be higher than earlier

There are some cars there monitoring the situation.

According to Jon Freeman the earthquake activity today is reduced compared to yesterday.

hi karyo

agree its lower but it can also mean magma is moving easier

keep looking at quakes close to baroabunga and maybe another bigger one soon

how this pans out is anyones guess
