A volcano erupting in Russia's Far East is sending plumes of gas and ash high into the sky and creating a lava lake. The Plosky Tolbachik volcano is located in Kamchatka peninsula, hundreds of miles (kilometres) from the nearest residential areas. Gennady Karpov, a volcano expert at Russia's Academy of Sciences in the Far East, said Friday: "There were no lava lakes at Kamchatka volcanos before now. We have never seen this before." Plosky Tolbachik has emitted jets of hot lava up to 650 feet (200 metres) high. Its last eruption had occurred in November after the volcano was dormant for almost 40 years. Russian officials say the current eruptions are not likely to end any time soon. However, the volcano is not forcing any changes in the flight patterns of airlines that pass over that area of Russia, said Karpov and the European air traffic agency Eurocontrol in Belgium.

Mount Lokon in North Sulawesi of the central part of Indonesia erupted on Thursday, spewing ash by up to 800 meters to the sky, head of National Volcanology Agency Surono said here. The volcano first erupted at 06:56 local time Thursday, releasing ash up to over 800 meters high and the second one at 10:44 local time, but the height of the ash could not be monitored as it was covered by cloud, Surono said. “We do not issue an evacuation zone, as the frequent of quake and its strength has been weakening,†he said. The frequent and the strength of the quakes started to raise at 22:54 local time Wednesday. “We immediately issued a warning over possible eruption. But after the second eruption today (Thursday) we do not issue a warning,†he said.

A high level eruption occurred at Palwueh volcano, Indonesia on 3 February 2013. Ash emissions were reported to an altitude of 45,000 ft, extending 175 nautical miles south. Satellite images showed a hotspot over the volcano on 28 and 31 January 2013.

The ground of the Campi Flegrei ("burning fields"), also known as the Phlegraean Fields, has risen more in recent weeks than it has in a long time. This does not necessary indicate a heightened risk of an eruption, however, says Thomas Wiersberg, a scientific drilling expert for the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam. The Phlegraean Fields are a large caldera, or volcanic crater, lying mostly underwater off the Italian coast. The caldera is thought to have been formed by a massive eruption some 35 000-40 000 years ago. The last major eruption in the fields of boiling mud and sulphurous steam holes, one of a few dozen super volcanoes worldwide, occurred in 1538.

taly's Mount Etna sent lava and gas shooting toward the stars early this morning (Feb. 19), the first big eruption for the volcano in 2013. The famous Sicilian volcano burst to life overnight, sending a fountain of fire into the air. The dramatic scene was captured in a video by Klaus Dorschfeldt, a videographer and webmaster at Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. Mount Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes, had emitted signs of an imminent paroxysm in recent weeks. On Jan. 22, lava and strong flashes in the volcano's New Southeast Crater were clearly visible from the Sicilian foothills; these often herald a new paroxysm: short, violent eruptive bursts. Dorschfeldt said he knew Mount Etna's recent signals could precede new activity. "I've followed the activity of Etna for many years, and with time you learn to know it as if it were your friend," he said in an email interview. "Following it constantly you learn to be a keen observer and a minor change can lead to something important," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

Etna has been at again during the night of the 23rd of Feb with Lava fountaining up to 800M. A video here http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/eruptions/

If you read the article 800m sounds small when Vesuvius managed 3km in 1779.

(Reuters) - Hundreds of small earthquakes have shaken the earth around the Sabancaya volcano in southern Peru over just a few days and the rumbling, along with plumes of smoke spewing up to 320 feet high, have put officials on alert to evacuate the area.

Seismicity has increased dramatically at Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador. Given the open-vent state of the volcano, there are emissions of gases and ashes according to the ecuadorian Geophisic Institute. The last eruptive episode took place on the 14 and 30 of last decemeber and then went to a scale of moderate and low. On the 25 and 27 of febrary over five tremors were reported associated to lava inside the volcano. On the first of march the tremors reach a total of 80 with several minutes of duration. From December 12, 2012 a progressive increase of seismicity was recorded, mainly in the number of earthquakes associated with fluid motion and some fracture earthquakes. A slight increase in gas emissions was recorded. During the following days the population should continue monitoring the volcano activity because is located only 80 kilometers from Quito the capital city.

Colima volcano

mexico

Activity at the volcano continues to increase. The new lava dome in the summit crater has apparently grown enough that incandescent lava could soon start descending into the Lumbre canyon on the western flank and produce pyroclastic flows, scientists from the university of Colima have warned. In a similar way, the Cordobán and Monte Grande canyons in southwestern and southern flanks are at increased risk, and Civil Protection has advised the population to avoid these valleys. The increase in activity is also visible on the latest seismogram, showing tremor pulses and more frequent and stronger explosion & rockfall signals.
