Canary Islands Government Raises Alert Level On El Hierro Volcano To YELLOW

Considering the volcanic hazards involves a series of actions to be undertaken sequentially has established a worldwide warning system for the population based on the selection of three colors (green, yellow and red). In this way the population may adopt certain behaviors based on a symbol that are easy to understand color. We must continue in the case of each of them, the recommendations for the same. The Canary Islands government brings to light yellow-volcanic earthquake situation in El Hierro.................http://theextinction...cano-to-yellow/

please read link for information

The Canary Islands government has set the 'yellow alert' for the population of El Hierro as a lot of volcanic tremors are continuing to occur below the island since last July.

Thanks Yamkin,

So they are just expecting lava flows and no explosive events/ major ash plums?

reading through jon frimann's blog ( http://www.jonfr.com...p=1514#comments ) it seems we are watching the wrong volcano.

whilst katla is rumbling away, keeping us interested, hekla is showing unusual signs of inflation. this volcano erupts regularly, about every 10 years and last erupted 11 years ago.

the unusual thing about it is, it gives very little warning. typically in the region of an hour from no activity to full eruption, making it very dangerous, as it is a popular hiking spot in iceland

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hekla

nearest seismic station to Hekla:

http://hraun.vedur.is/ja/oroi/hau.gif

strain meter showing 'activity' at Hekla.

http://hraun.vedur.is/ja/strain/str_corr/index.html

i'm not sure what these charts show exactly but as far as i know, if they fluctuate wildly, as in the first part of the first chart, they show pressure building as the mountain tries to tear itself apart. apparently, if this co-incides with an earthquake, we get an eruption.

Thanks to you as well Karyo.

I'm glad that part of the Island is taking the threat very seriously as a precaution.

I agree. Although this is Volcanic related seismic activity, no eruption has taken place (yet) and as such consistently posting 2.9, 2.5, 2.7 earthquakes doesn't help anything given the UK has quakes on that scale on practically a daily basis. Unless something changes in the range of ground deflation/inflation, harmonic tremor pitch, an eruptive fissure event then its worth posting. But its just wasting time and forum space posting cr-p about magnitude 2.5 quakes that have little relevance to any ACTIVITY of an eruption.

The quake swarm in place is very relevant, hence why they are on Yellow Alert.

This is, if I'm not mistaken, a case of hunting for evidence to fit a theory. Getting a bit annoying to be honest and detracting from the value this thread holds for many people.

Not hunting for evidence to fit a theory??? I post the same info, but more in depth on a scientific thread where they are ok with my 'unting for evidence' due to the serious nature of El Hierro.

I take pride in my posts and spend a lot of time researching.

Peace to all.

I read a comment on the daily mail comments section from a person who was from El Hierro and he said that there was no panic and a very limited evacuation.

He also says the tremors have been going on for a couple of months at around the same sort of intensity and that the island folk weren't unduly worried.

So I think that maybe there's notthing too much to worry about?

If there is an eruption, I didn't say what I just said Posted Image
