Krakatoa is generally more active than Santorini, but its eruptions are smaller i think (Krakatoa's 1883 eruption was on the lower end of VEI 6 while Santorini's last eruption was around 3 times larger and closer to VEI 7). Krakatoa's also had at least 2-3 caldera forming eruptions in the last 2000 years, but Santorini's last one was about 3500 years ago.

Just been looking at the Santorini and Krakatoan eruptions and i was just curious why in the space of around 100 years, Krakatoa has gone from 300 metres beneath the surface to 300 metres above while Santorini took around 3000 years to break back through the surface and has only increased by around 150 metres since 1700.

Less injection of magma below the volcano. One thing though while Anak Krakatua is erupting frequently it means there's an open vent so little pressure building up so an 1883 isn't likely any time soon.

Some more earthquake activity at Katla, but there's also continued activity around Gothabunga (the site of a suspected cryptodome or lava dike) or to the west and on the south flank of Myrdalsjokull outside the caldera.

Indonesia raises alert level on Mount Papandayan volcano

Indonesian officials have warned people to stay more than a mile (two kilometers) from two craters on a smoking volcano spewing noxious gas. Government volcanologist Surono says visitors and villagers have been told to stay away from the yellow craters on the 2,665-meter (8,743-foot) Mount Papandayan. The craters are tourist attractions but are now emitting dangerous hydrogen sulfide

Mount Soputan in Minahasa, North Sulawesi, emitted a cloud of ash on Sunday morning, reaching 1 kilometer in height. The volcanic eruption drew the attention of residents of Tompaso district in Minahasa, from which the volcano can be clearly seen. “I was surprised and panicked seeing the eruption at about 10 a.m. It was a big eruption; the clouds and ash looked very tall; almost the same as those produced in the big eruption several months ago,†said Tompaso resident Riko Tamunu, 24. He said he was attending church when the eruption occurred, adding that there had been smaller eruptions earlier at about 6 a.m. on Sunday. Some Tomoso residents also left their houses, churches or other buildings upon hearing the sound of the eruption. Several residents captured the event using their cell phone camera

Eastern Russia volcano churns out more ash

MOSCOW, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Scientists said ash continued to billow from a volcano in Russia's Far East, which could have an effect on international air traffic in the region.

The Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka peninsula was pushing ash as high as 6,000 meters (20,000 feet) and creating "light-intensity" tremors on the ground lasting as long as 40 minutes, the Far Eastern Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a written statement.

No towns in the area were considered threatened by the ash fall.

Shiveluch has been erupting periodically since 2009. The size of the mountain's crater has grown 50 percent in that period, RIA Novosti said Sunday.

Anybody know what seismic activity at Vesuvius is like? Curious whether it has rissen/fallen over the past decade.

Authorities raised the alert status of two volcanoes to the second-highest level over the weekend and told people to stay up to six kilometers away from the craters . The alert was raised on Sunday for Mount Soputan in North Sulawesi, just a day after being lifted for Mount Papandayan in Garut, West Java. “We decided to raise the alert level of Mount Soputan from ‘beware’ to ‘alert’ this afternoon following more frequent earthquakes and volcanic ash,” said Surono, who heads the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG).

Soputan, one of Sulawesi’s most active volcanoes, erupted in July, spewing ash up to 5,000 meters into the air and shutting down Sam Ratulangi Airport in the capital, Manado, for three hours. But the alert level was lowered to “beware” after volcanic activity eased.

On Sunday, Soputan erupted at least twice and spewed volcanic ash 1,000 meters into the air. Surono said the agency had banned all activity within six kilometers of the crater. “It’s a big danger zone because the expulsion of volcanic ash has been quite powerful,” he said. “We are afraid lava rocks could travel far, but fortunately there are no residential areas within an eight-kilometer radius of the crater.”

On Saturday, the level for Mount Papandayan was also raised to “alert,” and the PVMBG declared a two-kilometer exclusion zone around the crater, Surono said. “For now, we are not too worried about a major eruption,” he said. “We are more concerned by the toxic gas.”

Papandayan bears some similarity to Mount Dieng in Central Java, which in June spewed dangerous amount of potentially lethal carbon dioxide. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said gas was coming from three craters — Walirang, Manuk and Balagadama. He said the BNPB had dispatched a quick-response team to assess what actions the local government and agencies might need to take to ensure the safety of residents living near the volcano.

Mount Papandayan last erupted on Nov. 11, 2002. While there were no deaths, dozens of houses were destroyed. Its earliest recorded eruption was in 1772, when it destroyed 40 villages and killed 2,951 people. There are now five Indonesian volcanoes at alert level: Soputan, Karangetang and Lokon in North Sulawesi, Mount Ibu in North Maluku and Papandayan

Deformation at El Hierro in the Canary Islands

http://bigthink.com/ideas/39899

this is not a guarantee of an eruption but worth noting

this may have some sort of bearing to this

More than 1,000 calls were made to the emergency number after the quake on the south east of the island. There was no damage or injuries. The 112 emergency number on the Canary Islands received more than 1,000 calls from concerned members of the public after an earthquake in Agüimes, on the south east of Gran Canaria, on Monday afternoon. None reported any injury or damage to property however. The quake at 2.15 pm was a 3.4 magnitude on the Richter scale, with the epicentre at sea off the coast of Playa del Inglés. Its effects were also felt in Santa Brígida, Telde, La Aldea de San Nicolás and Santa Lucía de Tirajana. There was a small tremor on El Hierro earlier on Monday, where EFE notes more than 3,700 seismic movements have been detected since July 19 this year.
