So how does the sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide coming out here add to global emissions, has anyone seen any reliable data on this?

Volcanoes emit a significant amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, but nowhere near what humans emit.

Readers sent us letters regarding the contributions of human-caused and volcanic emissions of sulfur dioxide, or SO2.

Ok, thanks for doing my homework.  Looks like I had been fed some alternative garden path facts.

LOL

The hardest part is trying to find information which isn't linked to climate change either the pro side or none pro side.

Interesting the island eruption that you're getting large blocks in the lava that float away on the lava. There's a new huge one in the foreground now is this an block thats got thrust up or part of a cone that's got pushed to it's present location.

I think that's the bit from the main cone that broke off about a weekish ago now.

I looked at the time lapse and it wasn't there yesterday so either it's a pushed up block or another break earlier today. Either way it's not what I expected. Small islands yes but not blocks as big as that.

More fairly large blocks on this mornings cams. Interesting activity always seems to pick up at night.

Still bubbling away.

Update this morning...

Still bubbling away!!

But the last few days (since wed) have seen increased large surges (though quieter right now), with many changes to the mouths of the 2 craters as the newly formed crust melts and then breaks away.

This can best be seen about 10pm UK time when dusk starts to settle over the valley. It has caused several 'islands' to form in the lava flow, and the emitted lava is still hot enough to show up as white 'light' on the valley floor.

Speaking of the valley.... the layer of lava there now has covered the ground with about 20 - 30 meters of still molten rock, and the top of the action has also added about 20-30 meters.   (My guess!).

Also the lava flow has now spilled about half a mile into the next valley.

The eruption is very variable, one minute no flames can be seen, the next there are shooting stars in all directions.

Also of interest is that our current northerly is affecting the island with intermittent snow squalls sweeping thru.

All in all.....lots to see, in watching the volcanos birth..

New fissures have just opened up most likley the reason why the activity has dropped a bit today

The new fissure is expanding rapidly. I wonder the activity will shift completely to the new area.

Am I right in thinking you believe that to be a second fissure which has opened.

There was inklings of a second fissure about to open last night based on seismic data although it was thought to be have been opening further north towards the Keilir area than this close to the Krýsuvík fissure, its extremely rare for any geologists/volcanologists to have visually seen this fissure being created in real-time with boots and data equipment already on the ground.

The lava fountaining is spreading steadily south quite a large fissure by the looks of it.

A report has the new fissure 500m  long at the moment.

When Krafla volcano erupted a man was stood where the fissure opened up the lava was moving very quick as well. By the sounds of it the man ran nearly as fast as Bolt to get away from it. He did survive btw.

It could be quite serious as it may point to a much larger magma pool than thought, given most pressure has already been released by  2 existing cones.

I wonder if the eruption is still classed as small. Anyway it's got bored trying to fill one valley and now going to bigger deeper valley. The new fissure going great guns building cinder codes very rapidly. They'll be a be a big as Bob shortly.

Lava eruptions can never be classified as more than about VEI3 simply because they are still on a small scale. The exceptions are like Laki where it might unzip with massive force and spew for years.

I was referring to amount of lava being produced which had it classed as minor as the volume was small. Certainly the new fissure is more productive at the moment.
