Ah well Etna is looking to be quiet tonight.

However there's a good swarm going on in south west Iceland

Etna back at it again.

The other summit camera's covered in cloud. I'm guessing the white stream to the left is a lava flow

Looks like an eruption may be about to start.

Aviation ash warning has been bumped to orange, pulse tremor is now ongoing and i understand there is evacuation of properties in the vicinity of Keilir.

The civil protection agency gave a press briefing at 16.00. It was broadcast live on most radio and TV channels and the highlights in English are below.

The area of the Reykjanes Penninsular is known for it's fissure eruptions so it'll be similar in nature to the Bárðarbunga eruption of 2014-1015, with a few larger phreatomagmatic explosions at first as the magma interacts with the water-table. The whole Reykjanes has been in uplift with de-gassing and earthquake for a good while now so it's not too much of a surprise that a dyke intrusion event is taking place.

Its kind of good that it's happening now (due to the season and covid) as Krýsuvík isn't too far away from Keflavik airport and the Blue Lagoon.

From reports it sounds like a graben has possibly formed so i would expect that we will initially see the venting of steam etc that we saw back in 2014.  question is, will we then get the fountains and flows that followed?

From the sounds of it, activity on the peninsula can, once it starts, be a long lived on/off affair over a number of centuries. Buckle up!

Although any eruption of Krýsuvík won't directly impact European air-travel as much asEyjafjallajökull did, for a short time when Icelandic airspace is closed for that region it'll have a impact on trans-Atlantic flights which often incorporate Keflavik into their flight plans as a diversionary option. It'll be interesting from a meteorological & photographic point of view to see how much sulphur is released and what impact that has on sun rise/sets in the UK, i've been to Iceland twice and driven the usual Keflavik-Reykjavik road, aswell as going to the Blue Lagoon, and the geological nature of the fissure vents all across the Penninsular is evident to see.

Still no eruption in Iceland and still the tremors continue. It 's also interesting how quiet the rest of the country is.

Keep missing Etna but has continued to erupt on and off. At the moment camera's just show Snow. Iceland the earthquakes seem to trailing off a little and dike extrusion seems to moving south west off the Reykjanes ridge. I wouldn't be surprised at an underwater eruption in the coming weeks.

Sjónvarp

RUV2 webcam, the eruption looks to be in the direction of Fagradalsfjall from my memory of Reykjavik and the direction the first cam is looking at. A bit of a surprise how little eq activity precedented the actual eruption although if the magma had found this easiest 'escape' route then there'd be little in the way of obstruction anyway. Hopefully there'll be some good pics when the morning light comes around.

TF-FMS is the Beech, the pics and video so-far is from the Icelandic CG Helicopter (just to confirm that) with a red-aviation alert and the main Keflavik - Reykjavik road now closed. Interestingly the Icelandic Met are advising the closest residents to keep as much heating on the go overnight to thwart any potential home intrusion of gases that might build up.
