Would be great if a couple of big volcanoes on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" - such as Mt Rainier in the US or Mt Merapi in the Philippines blew their top and eject enough sulphur into the stratosphere to cool the climate (a bit like Mt Pinatubo in the Philippines did in 1991). Not that I think that the devastation that big volcanoes can cause locally is great, but we really could do well with a change in the weather. Getting rather fed up with the mild wet winters, warm muggy autumns and unpredicatable summers that global warming has brought to the north of England in recent years!!!

No 3+ yet but quite a swarm going on in the Katla caldera.

Specialist remark

Around 50 earthquakes have been detected in the Katla volcano today. This is the highest daily rate this year. The largest earthquake have reached magnitude M2.3 and they are all very shallow.

Yes been keeping a eye on this recently. Seems to have been a up tick in earthquake activity across the globe . Katla area presently has had 5 minor quakes in around 20 minutes . Katla itself is classed as a 2 at the moment  but this could easily be upgraded

Carl @ Volcano Café is not convinced that anything particularly out of the ordinary is going on:

http://www.volcanocafe.org/eldgja-eruption-dating/comment-page-2/#comment-10835

But he does seem to think that the pattern of behaviour has changed in the last few months: it's just that the timescale for an eruption could be anything from a few weeks to several years.

Swarm has declined but alert has been raised to yellow. No tremor as yet which would be sign of a coming eruption.

the alert was raised yesterday at the height of the swarm. activity has all but died in Katla. though a couple of new quakes have occurred just recently. however Jon Frimann (iceland geology blogger) says conductivity is still high in glacial run-off, so may just be a lull.

An interesting quite from jonfr on is page who rarely builds something up if he doesn't think it will happen.

Quiet period in Katla volcano can last up to a week (in my experience). What exactly happens next is impossible to know, but it is clear that Katla volcano is getting real close to erupting. When that might happen is impossible to know as before. All that can be done is to wait and see.

Part of me wants it to erupt so my stay abroad can me lengthened.  On a more scary note is the amount of tremors that have hit here (tenerife)  last few days.  I haven't felt any in Las Americas.  Could be that teide is preparing herself for an eruption too.  Hopefully nothing major.  What would be the affects on this volcano erupting??

On a global scale hardly any. It is not a volcano that gives major eruptions. However, at a local scale it can be pretty catastrophic if it causes a landslide or a pyroclastic flow.

As for Katla, I hope she waits till May when the weather is calmer and she can block as much sunlight as possible! ;-)

Volcanologists fear infamous Tenerife volcano will erupt after 100 earthquakes are recorded

Experts warning pattern of earthquakes across the south-west of the Island could cause Mount Teide to erupt.

A swell of seismic activity on Tenerife could indicate a long-dormant volcano on the holiday island could be about to blow, with volcanologists warning nearly 100 mini-tremors could signify an upcoming eruption.

Mount Teide, a 3km-high volcano in the south of Tenerife, last erupted in 1909, with an earlier eruption in the 18th Century destroying the town and principal port of Garachico, as well as several smaller villages.

Now volcanic experts are warning that a pattern of almost imperceptible earthquakes across the south-west of the island could cause Mount Teide to erupt once again.

"We are registering an important seismic rally on the island of Tenerife," Involcan, The Volcanology Institute of the Canary Islands said in a statement.

"In principle, these earthquakes are very low magnitude, consistent with those that occur in active volcanoes.

"The number of earthquakes is provisional pending the analysis of the signals more closely, but we can qualify this activity as a seismic swarm whose pattern is an alignment with prevailing direction north-east to south-west ".

Other worrying indicators include an "abnormal" amount of carbon dioxide coming from the volcano and surrounding areas as the earthquakes take place some 13km underground.

Aroa Gonzales, a reservations manager for Ritz Carlton in Tenerife which is near where the seismic activity is taking place, told IBTimes UK the earthquakes were too small to be felt but news of the possible eruption had swept across the island.

"The small earthquakes are very low ... I wouldn't say that because of these we are expecting a volcanic eruption. It is very, very, small activity and we are not preoccupied by it," she said.

Gonzales added that the micro earthquakes were not going to be a concern into the future and there had been no changes to reservations at the hotel, particularly over Christmas. which was a busy period.

"For Christmas we are almost fully booked. It is high season for us and our reservations numbers are very good," she explained.

I'm still over here until Monday and although some panic was Raised by that rubbish newspaper s*n there has been no stress here. What was weird was that the earth tremors were not in teide itself.  They were above adeje which is significantly lower down so it could be brewing from low down.

Mount Etna reminds everyone that taking volcano's for granted isn't recommended. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-39295585

A sudden conversion of snow to steam as the lava went over if caused two explosions spewing the onlookers with hot rocks. No one killed luckily but looking at the pictures of the people afterwards to me shows that they weren't properly prepared.

There's risk assessment and then there's actually being out there 'in the field,' even with dormant volcanoes that remain quiet for months on-end they can throw up all kinds of unexpected surprises. Surviving The Volcano (aka Surviving Galeras) is worth a read, it focuses on a scientific team out in Colombia studying Galeras during a dormant phase and suddenly found themselves in a much similar but deadlier situation with a full vent-eruption event as they were within the crater.
