Infrared satellite from 8:45 UTC shows that the plume has stretched right over Argentina nearly to the South Atlantic http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif

Seems to be a bot of confusion as to which volcano is erupting or whether it's a fissure eruption. No doubt information will get better as the day goes on.

I've actually camped on top of that volcano if its the one they think it is. I wouldn’t be surprised if more than one erupted, until you visit the Chilean Andes you don’t realise how many active volcanoes there are and how close to each other they are.

I wonder what VEI number would it have? The biggest eruption from this volcano was a VEI4 but most are smaller.

Talk of the plume coming from where the collapsed caldera at the Cordillera Nevada. The entire range is all a interlinked chain of Volcanic systems so much like seen with Iceland at Eyaf its entirely possible magma migration sourced its way to this caldera via a lateral faultline, and ruptured where the weak points would obviously underlie.

This would explain the eruption occuring Northwest of the Puyehue summit itself (where the Cordillera Nevada lies) and is more plausiable than a singular fissure event being responsible for a 6x3 rupture evident on the plume images, A fissure event would be more linear and less viscious in erupting rocks some 52km downwind.

At the moment the eruption is from a 2km fissure, it is VE3 up to now and when its over it may be a VE4, there is ash falling in Argentina(sounds dramatic somehow?).

As it is only a VE4 max it will effect the global temperature so microscopically it wont be recordable. At the moment that's how it is, it could change, but most probably stay a VE4 max.

That's what I have made of todays Internet. The pictures show what looks like a huge eruption cloud obscured from view fully by middle distance annoying... clouds. The eruption as filmed from what I can only roughly judge is the equivalent of the Needles to Portland bill away, looks massive, fitting of an eruption the same size as Iceland's Grimm's this year... or 10 times the size of E-J-Olay biscuit barrel from last years volcano season(1).

It has been reported as a VE6, it is not, there is some confusion about local hazard scales and too much coffee...

1. If you think I am serious here regarding volcano season, you are probably a reporter.

Some good photos in this link http://www.heraldsun...f-1226070106546

Seems like the eruption has died down for now.

More video of the Chile volcano here.

Chile Volcano Pics

Yes, some truly awesome pics of this volcano coming in.

Lightening within the cloud ..

A 'mushroom' cloud effect

and all the dreadful dust fallout.

After awakening on June 4, 2011, the eruption at the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcanic Complex continued through at least June 6th. Located in Chile, just west of the border with Argentina, Puyehue-Cordón Caulle emitted a plume of light-colored ash that stretched along the edge of the Andes. Hours earlier the prevailing winds had shifted, forming the prominent kink visible in the plume.

This natural-color satellite image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Terra on the morning of June 6, 2011. At the time the Buenos Aires Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) reported that the ash plume reached an altitude of 40,000 feet (12,000 meters).

Yes, the dust looks dreadful — what do they do with it all? Does anyone know? This ash looks very gritty compared with the Icelandic stuff.

Any figures on the eruption rate? It looks a lot larger than Grimsvotn's eruption based on how far the ash cloud has traveled.

Can't remember which volcano it was but the experts expected farming to be struggling for months. A few weeks after the eruption they went back and the farmers had simply dug the ash into the soil effectively burying the ash. Now the determination to do that is amazing. Good fertilizer though.

According to this article the eruption continues and there is a slight increase in its seismic activity! The authorities are evacuating the remaining residents from the exclusion zone against their will!

Just seen on one of the news channels on sky that the ash cloud has reached NZ and could effect flights for a week.

And just seen this http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif It has travelled the world globally and still going strong pressure is getting released.

It's an impressive eruption! It's a shame it is happening during the southern hemisphere winter as the impact of blocking the sunlight would be greater in the summer.

version VONA/Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity

Issued: 20110612/0420Z

VOLCANO: KIZIMEN (1000-23)

Current AVIATION COLOR CODE: RED

Previous AVIATION COLOR CODE: ORANGE

Source: KVERT

Notice Number: 34-11

Volcano Location: 55°08'N, 160°19'E;

Area: Kamchatka, Russia

Summit Elevation: 8151 ft (2485 m)

Prognosis Volcanic Activity: Seismic and explosive activity of the volcano increases. Strong ash explosions up to 49,200-32,800 ft (15-10 km) ASL could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Volcanic Activity Summary: Seismic activity of the volcano significantly increases. A magnitude of strong volcanic tremor in the area of Kizimen increased from 07:00 UTC on June 11, additional from 17:00 UTC on June 11, and some more from 02:00 UTC on June 12. According to the seismic interpretation, probably seven strong explosions occurred on June 11 (for height 13,120-19,352 ft), and three (for height 16,400-19,352 ft) - on June 12 last time. According to satellite data, a wide ash plume extending about 83.9 mi (135 km) to the south-east from the volcano was noted at 00:12 UTC on June 12 (20110612/0012Z) and earlier. A bright thermal anomaly continues to registering over the volcano.

Volcanic cloud height: Unknown

Other volcanic cloud information: a wide ash plume extending to the south-east from the volcano on this time

This sounds interesting! I wonder if we are having another VEI4 eruption about to happen.

Interesting extract from this website about the Chilean volcano eruption:

Andrew Tupper, of the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Darwin, told the ABC that the Chilean ash cloud and its westward drift was an “exceptional eventâ€. “It’s got a very strong satellite signal and it’s right up there with the big, big eruption clouds ... It will keep going. I would suspect it will do a loop of the globe.â€

“The last time we saw anything like it was 20 years ago with another eruption from South America but this is actually a larger ash cloud. It’s pretty major.†The eruption of Chile’s Puyehue volcano more than a week ago had disrupted flights out of Buenos Aires. However, the westward drift of the ash cloud appeared to have caught passengers and some airlines off-guard in the middle of the Queen’s birthday holiday weekend in Australia.

I can't find any info on whether this eruption is a VEI4.
