May I ask why you think it's a dud?  If it's just a personal opinion or gut feeling, that's perfectly fine by me, it would just be helpful if you could have expanded on why you think so. :)

Neither - was just having a larf to temper my mild disappointment when the alert was lowered just as things were starting to get interesting!

I've been following the github page, are the numbers on there lower than reported? If so the earthquakes are coming thick and fast. Just had a 2.2 and a 3.5 within 2.5km.

Hi swebbyThe thread now is so long now a new volcano thread being started is a good idea and link this one to it if previous info is neededNeed a mod to do it though

Hi JP / Mods

Would it be worth starting a dedicated thread for Bárðarbunga and transferring all the recent posts into it along with an initial post for all the web cam/links that people have been posting?  If it does blow I can see the general volcanic activity thread getting buried with posts.

Cheers

S

As per popular demand a new thread opened specifically for Bárðarbunga, I have added the bookmarks I have saved to the first post, please feel free to add more. The new thread also links back to this one.

Many thanks for responding LG.  No probs about it being a tongue in cheek comment, or even if was your honest opinion for that matter but I thought it would be helpful to clarify as there may well be people reading that do not have great understanding of what is actually happening and we have all seen from the winter threads that posts contrary to surrounding posts can cause confusion :)

Volcanoes Today, 27 Aug 2014: Stromboli volcano, Bardarbunga, Kilauea, Sabancaya, Fuego, Popocatépetl, Batu Tara, Bagana

Wednesday Aug 27, 2014 18:00 PM |

Thermal image of the upper Sciara del Fuoco of Stromboli

Today's earthquakes in the Dyngjujökull glacier and Askja (triangle) area

Location of earthquakes since the start of the crisis. The current position of the magma intrusion front is marked by the youngest quakes (red) (IMO)

View of the pad of lava with the equivalent view from a thermal camera. (HVO

Steam plume from Popocatépetl yesterday

Seismic signal of the phreatic explosion at Sabancaya on 25 Aug (IGP)

Stromboli (Eolian Islands, Italy): The lava flow in the new channel at the eastern side of the Sciara del Fuoco remains well alimented. After a calmer weak, it is now again reaching the sea, at least intermittently.

Bardarbunga (Iceland): Over 800 earthquakes have occurred today so far, mostly now beyond the edge of the Dyngjujökull glacier. The crisis is showing no signs of decreasing. The intrusion itself has migrated about 1 km northwards since yesterday, and approaches the Asjka volcanic complex, which is a worrying development. A magnitude 4 earthquake occurred this morning under the eastern caldera rim of Askja (s. image).

IMO does not think an eruption is imminent and announced that it will from now on only post updates once a day (around noon) unless the situation escalates.

.

from IMO's latest update:

"At 00:16 UTC today, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurred in the caldera of Bárðarbunga. At 02:50 UTC, another similar-sized earthquake (magnitude 5.2) took place in the same region.

...27 Aug:

The intense seismic crisis caused by a significant laterally migrating magma intrusion continues to evolve with little changes.

Earthquake activity has been a bit weaker yesterday, only to pick up again today. Two more magnitude 5+ quakes occurred after midnight near the caldera of the Bardarbunga central volcano.

.

The intrusion is now 45 km long and roughly 20 km deep, but so far remains mostly below 5 km depth. Horizontal spreading between the Dyngjuháls (DYNC) and Kverkfjöll (Gengissig, GSIG) GPS stations approaches 50 cm.

At the moment, the expected most likely outcome scenario is a moderate to large fissure eruption, should the dyke eventually breach surface. The question is when this will occur, and where the magma exactly will be coming from:

Bagana (Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea): Eruptive activity continues at the volcano. An ash plume at approx. 7,000 ft (2.1 km) altitude was spotted by Darwin VAAC extending 50 km to the SW yesterday.

Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia): A new ash plume extending approx. 50 km NW was reported yesterday on satellite imagery by Darwin VAAC.

This follows a relatively long interval of several weeks since the last ash plume spotted in early July.

Kilauea (Hawai'i): The lava flow branch that entered and followed a deep ground crack on KÄ«lauea's East Rift Zone last week has resurfaced and is now forming a small lava island inside the forest. Its farthest point is 11.4 km (7.1 miles) from the the vent on PuÊ»u ʻŌʻÅ, and 3.1 km (1.9 miles) from the eastern boundary of the Wao Kele o Puna forest reserve.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Activity remains essentially unchanged and has been relatively low. The volcano emits a gas-steam plume most of the time and occasionally has small explosions that eject small amounts of ash.

Fuego (Guatemala): Activity has been stable at average levels with intermittent weak to moderate strombolian-type explosions.

During the past 24 hours, ash plumes rose up to 800 m and drifted up to 12 km west and southwest. The stronger explosions were accompanied by shock waves. Incandescent material was seen ejected to approx. 100 m above the crater.

Sabancaya (Peru): A phreatic explosion occurred at the volcano on the evening of 25 Aug at 20:39 local time, Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP) informed.

The eruption was not observed directly, but inferred from its seismic trace. A swarm of long-period quakes followed the eruption, suggesting internal fluid movements.

.

The report mentions that the eruption could have been triggered by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake that occurred earlier that day in over 200 km distance. Whether such a link is reasonable or not remains questionable.

A giant ash cloud is affecting some flights to and from Australia following a major eruption of the Rabaul caldera in Papua New Guinea.

Satellite imagery shows the plume has reached a height of about 18 kilometres, indicating a significant eruption.

Commercial flights typically cruise at altitudes of between nine and 12 kilometres and the Bureau of Meteorology has issued an advisory to airlines indicating where the cloud is likely to spread.

"The initial low-level ash is moving northwards, but as it gets a bit higher it's likely to spread out both to the north and south along the western side of the volcano," said Craig Earl-Spurr, meteorologist at the bureau's Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre. The bureau will continue to monitor the plume as it dissipates.

White Island volcano (New Zealand): increased earthquakes

A swarm of small earthquakes was detected on Thursday near White Island, New Zealand scientists monitoring the volcano reported. The largest event is magnitude 3.3 and was located within 5km of the island.

All of the earthquakes appear to be within 5 km of White Island. The size of the locatable events ranges from magnitude 2.5 to 3.3 and all are shallow (less than 10 km depth).

GeoNet has not recorded or observed any changes on the volcano since the earthquakes started. Measurements of volcanic gases at the island did not show any changes in the amount of gas been released from the volcano.

Earthquake sequences are relatively frequent near White Island and have not resulted in changes in activity on the island in the past.

White Island remains in a state of volcanic unrest. A range of eruptive activity can occur under these conditions and eruptions can start with little or no prior warning. Larger eruptions can eject mud and rocks and may impact the crater floor area. The Volcanic Alert Level remains at Level 1.

Nishino-shima volcano (Japan): island continues to grow

Sunday Aug 31, 2014 17:23 PM | BY: T

View of the Nishino-Shima island from the west on 26 Aug (Japanese Coast Guard)

View of the small lava dome inside the summit crater

Small explosion from the summit crater (infrared image)

The island remains active and continues to grow as lava flows add new land to it. The Japanese Coast Guard made another survey flight on 26 August and observed ongoing effusive and explosive activity in the main crater.

A comparison with pictures from July shows that a new 3-400 m wide platform to the northeast of the island has been added as new land during the past weeks.

In addition, what appears to be a small lava dome has appeared inside the crater of the main cone. It unclear when and how exactly it formed, but is the site of at least occasional explosions.

The "dome" could be simply the result of some older lava pushed up to the vent by rising fresh magma underneath, or is could represent the latest erupted magma. In that case, it would be an indication that either the lava currently erupted is slightly more viscous and/or effusion rate has dropped, allowing the lava to cool down more effectively and accumulating to form the cake-like dome, rather than to feed flows. The absence of active lava flows entering the sea on the latest pictures would be in agreement with this.

Tungurahua volcano news & eruption updates:

Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador): explosions generate small pyroclastic flows

Sunday Aug 31, 2014 17:32 PM | BY: T

Sequence of eruptions with pyroclastic flows at Tungurahua (photos G. Viracucha OVT/IG)

A series of small pyroclastic flows occurred yesterday evening, IGEPN reported in its latest special bulletin.

The eruptions took place between 18:23 and 19:00 local time, and are the first occurrences of pyroclastic flows since the start of the new eruptive phase that started on 27 July.

Fortunately, the flows were small and eruptive activity remains only moderate, as frequent but typically smaller explosions occur and release pressure. It is thought that the volcano is currently in a state of having an open conduit, allowing magma to rise easily to the crater before building up large pressure.

IGPEN mentioned that significant deformation of the upper part of the volcano had been detected recently, indicating that more magma is on its way towards the crater. Hence, similar eruptions are expected to continue for a while.
