There's risk assessment and then there's actually being out there 'in the field,' even with dormant volcanoes that remain quiet for months on-end they can throw up all kinds of unexpected surprises. Surviving The Volcano (aka Surviving Galeras) is worth a read, it focuses on a scientific team out in Colombia studying Galeras during a dormant phase and suddenly found themselves in a much similar but deadlier situation with a full vent-eruption event as they were within the crater.

Actually there were warning signs for Galeras  but the scientist in charge ignored them. The volcano wasn't dormant at the time either.

Ice water are not a good mix for lava so there is a high risk of a sudden explosion. I was surprised how  badly prepared those people were.

They were very lucky this didn't happen. Snow lava interact forming a pryroclasic flow

Came across this article http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/feart.2016.00067/full

Notice again that explosive activity due to interaction of melt water and snow occurred quite often.

Mount Etna seems to of been a bit busy of late and i have just noticed that there is a new vent opened with a lava flow, this doesn't look like it is coming from the summit

orange rectangle is roughly where the summit is,yellow cirlce is where i think the new vent is but no sign of a fountain, red circle is where the lava flow is

Missed the last couple of eruptions in the past week or so but here is the live cam of Stromboli volcano southern Italy,it is spewing bits of lava in the air.

The Express says Yellowstone might blow up. Should I be worried?

Ok I am not worried as Express reported it. But if there was a major eruption might it not do something for global warming? A lot else I would expect.

Mount Agung in Bali, Indonesia is showing signs of trouble. Last erupted in 1964 and caused a worldwide drop in temperature of between 0.1-0.4c. It would need to blow quite soon I would imagine if its going to be a good backup for good winter weather setups over there

I was not aware it lead to some cooling. This is the advantage of a volcano erupting in the tropics as it can block more sunlight than volcanoes closer to the poles.

Interesting volcano has had two large eruptions of vei 5 however it doesn't tend erupt frequently and there may have been smaller ones which weren't recorded in the past.

Interesting, I will be tuning into this subject a little bit more I think, I haven't paid too much attention over the years. I remember Pinatubo in 1991, it did seem to me and others I have got to say,  that the sun seemed diluted by a light haze, always persistent, the following winter/spring was terrific and cold.  Something brewing in Vanuatu right now.

Just had a look at the volcano in Vanuatu. It erupts very frequently so it is unlikely to give a huge eruption. Stunning setting though with a large crater lake.

Currently, the Bali volcano is the one that is more likely to give a more significant eruption.

Thanks Yarmy, that's useful to know.

So a small drop is possible if its eruption is as big as the last one.

In this horrible, warming world, every little helps.

Apparently a new crack in the crater has been observed. Otherwise a frustrating lack of information at the moment unless someone finds a good source.  I'd rather not believe the newspapers as they tend to tell complete bumf at times.
