Looks like another new crack opening to left of main vent.

Incredible satellite images show how river of lava has weaved across La Palma and formed 550 yard-wide 'pyramid' in the sea as NEW volcano vent begins to spew molten rock.

Earth quakes on the up in Iceland could be an interesting few weeks. Vulcano is a main concern as people live extremely close to it and the eruptions are explosive and not effusive like Iceland, Canary Isle and Hawaii for example.

The seismic activity at Keilir is being closely monitored

Work on the installation of measuring equipment at Askja. The Scientific Advisory Board for Civil Protection met to discuss the situation

1.10.2021

The Scientific Council for Civil Protection met yesterday at a regular meeting to discuss the activity on the Reykjanes peninsula and by Askja.

The hurricane at Keilir continues

The quake began on 27 September SW of Keilir. The earthquakes in the cluster are located at the northern end of the magma tunnel that formed earlier in the year led to an eruption at Fagradalsfjall. Today, about 2,000 earthquakes have been detected in the cluster so far, 6 of them have been over 3 in magnitude. No eruption is observed, but the seismic activity in this eruption is similar to what was seen at Fagradalsfjall in the run-up to the eruption there. At this stage, however, it can not be ruled out that the earthquakes may be due to voltage fluctuations in the area, but not due to magma movements.

The latest measurements of crustal movements show no clear signs that magma is making its way to the surface of the earthquake's trajectories. However, this does not preclude magma from moving at great depths that are not visible in the measurement data, and it is therefore necessary to further monitor the development of the activity at Keilir.

"We really need more data", says Sara Barsotti, director of volcanic eruptions at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. "There is hope for new satellite images next week that will hopefully shed a clearer light on the development of things at Keilir and whether there is magma moving near the surface," says Sara.

Lava flow model showing possible lava flow in the event of an eruption south of Keilir. (Click on the image to see it larger) The model assumes an eruption on a 1.5km long fissure that lies NS and is in the area where the earthquake originated. To examine the possible effects of the eruption in these areas, 10 times more lava flow (100m 3 / s) is assumed than has been measured on average in the eruption at Fagradalsfjall. The model shows where the lava tongue would reach after a certain number of days, from 1 up to 14 days. The model indicates that given the multiple lava flows that are likely to occur, it will take lava flows from eruptions in these areas more than 2 weeks to threaten the infrastructure. (Photo / Model: Icelandic Meteorological Office / University of Iceland / Gro Birkefeldt Möller Pedersen)

Not recommended to be on the move in the vicinity of Keilir

Little activity has been visible from the main crater at Fagradalsfjall since 18 September and less eruption has been observed. "The eruption's behavior so far has been characterized by such breaks," says Sara. "A change in the eruption's behavior in conjunction with increased seismic activity near Keilir could mean that magma seeks something else, but the source of the seismic activity at Keilir is in an area connected to the magma tunnel that formed this spring. So we continue to follow developments closely and scientists and response parties are prepared if magma reaches the surface of Keilir ", Sara concludes.

If there were an eruption at Keilir, it would be similar to the eruption at Fagradalsfjall. The area is well guarded and is off the beaten track but a popular outdoor recreation area. At this stage, people are advised not to be on the move in the vicinity of Keilir.

It is also recommended that people consider earthquake prevention in their homes during the eruption.

Land continues to rise at Askja

Scientists are closely monitoring crustal movements near Askja, but land has begun to rise there after a long period where pressure decreased and landslides took place. At a meeting of the Scientific Council, the latest measurements were reviewed, which indicate that land continues to rise on the western edge of Lake Öskjuvatn and at a fairly even speed.

The seismic activity at Askja in recent weeks is higher than is generally measured in the area. The earthquakes are in known areas and of a similar magnitude as usual, but the frequency of earthquakes has increased and remained constant since the beginning of August.

The Meteorological Office is working to increase monitoring at Askja by installing new measuring equipment, but conditions there are very difficult due to the weather and heavy snow after the storm earlier this week. An additional GPS meter has already been installed.

The Science Council will meet again in two weeks' time on the activity at Askja and will subsequently set up possible scenarios for the development of matters at the volcano.

If Askja erupts it will be interesting too see the chemistry of the lava. Remember the dyke from Bárðarbunga actually reach Askja so in theory should be erupted as well.

Vast amounts of molten magma being thrown out of the lower vent at present.

Unfortunately, the lava flows have taken a new track, over to an existing and very fertile lava outcrop from the previous eruption in 1971 from Teneguia

I do often wonder if it is possible to measure the compression on the earth in years following a solar minimum to confirm how much force is in place to make the various volcanoes around the world fire up. Anybody know if this actually happens (the measurement I mean, not the volcanic activity)

Lightning over La Palma volcano not long ago probably due to pyroclastic clouds from the top vents, there was no storm over the area...

I've noticed the shortness of lightning in other videos of volcanoes. I guess it's because the charge is confined to within the cloud of particles of ash from the volcano rather than a charge field over a larger area such as would see from a thunder storm system.

EQ activity down at the Crust/Mantle boundary keeps getting stronger with an M4.5 down at 36km occurring around 8 this morning?

This will be new Magma forming and migrating to the chamber('s) above

With SO2 still pumping out well above the levels required before we could expect things to start calming down there we have to expect more to come over the coming days
