Turning into a more significant eruption now, lava fountain heights are estimated to be 400metres high now. I don’t speak Spanish but watching the RTVC feed I think the local geologist is desperately trying to stop the presenters talking about the landslide scenario.

Already beginning to centrer around one vent.

Poor old geologist media love scare stories.

I'm surprised they reckon only 400m, I thought higher going by the buildings at the front edge of the flows.

I did think that too.

Looks like they are going to evacuate at least 10,000 people from the island.

There's been talk about a possible eruption on La Palma for a few days but I was expecting a offshore eruption similar to the El Hierro eruption of 2011 and nothing in magnitude to these ongoing lava fountains and cinder-cones building up as the hours have progressed, the main concern will be phreatomagmatic explosions that could occur is ground-water comes into direct contact (something i've seen a few geologists say is almost a certainty) but for now the eruption is relatively 'clean' meaning military forces and potential evacuation flights can still liaise at the main airport should they be needed.

forgive my ignorance but if the talk is of any resulting tsunami from a landslide - if it happens - will it be from the west side of the volcano itself?  I ask as my Aunt and Uncle live on Lanzarote.

Yes, the fault lies across La Palma North,South, with the potentially sloppy bit going West. There will be back waves, but nothing to affect the Eastern Canaries.

Remember the mega tsunami optional as always is the most extreme solution. Partial or a very slow collapse are much more likely than the sudden one sixth of the island falls in the space 30seconds scenario. Even these are extremely unlikely.

Seems they have estimated any landslip there occurs about once every 100,000 years and they don't think its particularly unstable at the moment. As always there is a chance but as you say, very unlikely.

I was in La Palma in  January 2018 and visited many of the volcanic cones from previous eruptions. I stayed in Fuencaliente, in the south of the island. This is for sure the most beautiful of the canary islands, i hope the pine forests survive, the biodiversity in La Palma is unique.

Am I right in thinking that the summit does not actually erupt here and the recent vents are further down.

Seems to be a quite long fissure.

Just been watching a live feed on YT, looks to be a vent quite low down on the volcano. If you look at Google map satellite images the whole area is peppered with craters. Overall its quite a small eruption tbh when compared to the main volcano, at least for now anyway.

I find it quite soothing

Anyway as the island is starting to darken, visually we can see the really fire works, it goes from soothing to memorising

And it looking like Nar is waking up again in Iceland looking at tremor which has just started shooting up.

Iceland really know how to cover a volcano media wise.

La Palma looks like it's now settled down to one vent probably last about two to three weeks a pause then possible another set of fissures opening up nearby.

In chat say it's due to bad weather so they say,...we shall see.

If it wasn't for Corona and the fact it costs more for a PCR test than it does to fly return to La Palma from Manchester i'd seriously consider forking out the £38 it costs for the airfare just to see this vent erupting, although there's no guarantee that the LP-3 road I was planning on driving along isn't already closed given the authorities are wanting the 10,000 residents evacuated rather than 10,000 'tourists' flocking to catch a glimpse.

Windyty is showing a brief northwards-flow in the wind direction from the Canaries to the UK, so for us it might be worth catching a early sunrise/evening sunset for the typical deep-red colors resulting from volcanic particles/aerosols if the skies are clear enough.
