A whole came down last night looks totally different this evening. A huge build up of lava above the valley and a dark line along the hill over looking it. Bit like looking up at mass army massed on the hills getting ready rush down and crush you.

Earthquake swarm on La Palma indicate that an eruption of the volcano could occur soon.

Will be interesting in the next few months.  Askja in iceland looks to be getting ready to eruot too.  Have been watching the iceland one and have to say its awsome.  Mother nature at her best.  But have to say i have seen some idiots walking on the lava on the live feeds.

Something I have wondered is exactly how much volcanoes are having an effect on the climate at the moment.

I think back to my childhood and earlier years and we had Mount St Helens, Pinatubo etc.

At the time they lowered the temperature of the earth to a certain degree.

I don't recall any large volcano recently having such a large effect as those did. Are we in a series of eruptions which are less effective on the atmosphere?

I know little about this, just some thoughts I've had over the past few years and wondering if there has been a natural random change in the types of volcanoes of recent decades producing less sun obscuring ash etc.

I have been wondering the same thing.  But i think the so2 gasses reduce the uv light that hits earth and so lowers the temp of the atmosphere.  I think this year has been particularly active for volcanoes and it might poss effect the weather but  i have no idea how much

There hasn't been any eruptions big enough to have an effect on the weather. I'm pretty sure now that any big eruption would be tied in with climate change somehow either being caused by it or increasing the effects of climate change.

Askja can produce big eruptions but is more likely to have a small eruption.

Any big eruption could be a serious problem for mankind as we battle with over population and Covid. Our reliance on technology also makes us more vulnerable. So hopefully we won't have any big vi 6 or 7 eruptions in the next few decades.

If you go back to the Laki eruption the gas travelled to Europe causing crop failing,  people dying from pollution. Imagine what happen with these days with our added pollution and any crop failures would be a huge problem as we struggle to import supplies.

Going back to the present eruption it's apparently now the longest eruption in the 21st century. Scientists haven't a clue how the eruption is going to proceed as it's not acting to the normal pattern that volcanos normally show. Normally ground swells with tremors rising at the point of  the eruption. The eruption starts at the lowest point. The eruption starts large and trails off. This eruption hasn't done any of those things and makes it own rules as it goes on.

The weather is making hard too see what is going on the eruption is still going on but possibly at a slightly reduced level at the moment. It also looks like the Geldingadalir control barrier North will soon be overwhelmed.

Mmmm Harmonic tremor seems to be dropping so this present very interesting cycle may shortly stop for a bit. It may be having a brief supper break and rise again in a hour or so.

While another pause is under way it's amazing that the north side of the cone hasn't collapsed and you can see how it's been undermined by this vid.  It;s possible it may go today as magma drops back into the feeding dyke.

LA PALMA, Spain, Sept 19 (Reuters) - A volcano erupted on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma on Sunday, the islands' government said.

A huge column of smoke rose up after the eruption at 3.15 p.m. local time (1415 GMT) in the Cumbre Vieja national park in the south of the island, according the Canary Islands government.

Just before, authorities had evacuated about 40 people with mobility problems and farm animals from the villages around the volcano.

Now we've got two volcanos to watch.

Watch out for media predicting mage tsunami and island collapse.  Bad blow for La Palma as they would be hoping for tourist trade after all this covid.

If i was sat in florida i'd be watching this for sure , it's a big slab of earth that could possibly slip into the ocean.

I'm sure Brazil would be affected  but unsure , let's hope nothing but the inconvenience Of the La Palma folk are disrupted for a short time.

The mega tsunami were based on worst case scenarios modelling and not on past geology. There hasn't been a landslide of the required size in canary islands history. Yes it can possibly happen but very unlikely.

This is the first of a number of posts exploring the La Palma mega-landslide and tsunami hypothesis. This post explores the main structural features.
