To me it seems the eruption has slowed down somewhat I know the lava flow dropped a bit but today it seems much quieter so the dam may get lucky.

I did post early but it seemed to have been chewed up by the internet. The eastern part of the dam has been breached nd the lava making rapid process down the valley.

and the map of the area, and 6 hrs later the lava has filled about 1/3 of the valley floor.

The problem for the locals is that the road to the site and along the coast will now be breached... even worse they will lose the underground cables (internet access) to their more dangerous volcanos, which they continuously monitor.

Nyiragongo produces very fluid lava which can travel very large distances very quickly. Flank eruptions occur draining the lava lake at the summit. Despite have fluid lava the volcano has a structure of a strato volcano rather than a shield volcano

Only dip into this thread very fleetingly. Why did they construct the barrier? From what has been shown what is being protected?.

Access road coast road, cabling to sensors on other more dangerous volcanoes and fault lines.

an interview with Vísir yesterday, Fannar Jónasson, Mayor of Grindavík, expressed his concern regarding the flow of lava from the eruption near Fagradalsfjall toward Suðurstrandarvegur (a coastal road running between Grindavík and Þorlákshöfn, which besides being an important transportation artery has also been widely used by travellers visiting the volcano). If the lava were to flow into Nátthagi valley, it could stream south toward the coastal road, resulting in disruption to traffic and damage to infrastructure (including fibre-optic cables).

Looks like the eruption is slowing down the fountaining getting less and the gaps between them seem longer. Seismic activity is pretty low across the country. Probably fizzle out by the end of next week.

Still 20,000 people displaced from their homes. The Caribbean knows Volcano's well. There's been Montserrat which still smoking 24 years after the eruption and St. Lucia has alot of activity by the Pitons.

Funnily enough when I posted this we had several fountaining episodes fairly close together.

Etna was also erupting  last night and seems to be in a very active phase with almost daily eruptions after a brief period of relative quiet.
