Volcanic Activity Summary: Satellite observations of Cleveland Volcano on June 25, 2018 indicate the presence of a small circular lava flow, about 80 meters in diameter, covering the floor of the summit crater. Geophysical monitoring data from Cleveland Volcano has been unavailable since early yesterday afternoon and thus it is unknown if the effusion of lava within the crater generated detectable seismicity or infrasound. However, the presence of a lava flow over the active vent increases the possibility of a vent clearing explosion over the coming days to weeks and thus AVO is raising the Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level to ORANGE/WATCH. The last detected explosive activity at Cleveland volcano occurred May 5, 2018 UTC (May 4 local time).

Occasional, short duration explosive activity with minimal to no precursory signals is common at Cleveland Volcano, and explosions may occur without warning. Explosions typically produce relatively small volcanic ash clouds that dissipate within hours; however, more significant ash emissions may occur as they have in the past.

Cleveland volcano is monitored by only two seismic stations, which restricts AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

The eruption in the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) continues with no significant change during the past 24 hours.

Fountains from Fissure 8 spatter cone continue to supply lava to the open channel with intermittent small, short-lived overflows. These overflows rarely extend beyond the existing flow field. No active overflows were observed during this morning's helicopter overflight.The spatter cone is now about 55 m (180 ft) tall at its highest point, and fountains rarely rise above that point. At the coast, the northern margin of the flow field is still oozing fresh lava at several points in the area of Kapoho Beach Lots and a few burning areas were observed on the south side of the flow and west of highway 137. Lava was entering the sea over a broad area this morning primarily on the northern side of the entry area. As shown by yesterday's thermal map of the flow field, the lava channel has crusted over about 0.8 km (0.5 mi) inland of the ocean entry; lava is moving beneath the crust and into still-molten interior of earlier flows before it enters the sea.

Pele's hair and other lightweight volcanic glass fragments from the lava fountain at Fissure 8 continue to fall downwind of the fissure, dusting the ground within a few hundred meters (yards) of the vent. High winds may waft lighter particles to greater distances. Residents are urged to minimize exposure to these volcanic particles, which can cause skin and eye irritation similar to volcanic ash.

HVO field crews are on site tracking the fountains, lava flows, and spattering from Fissure 8 as conditions allow and are reporting information to Hawaii County Civil Defense. Observations are also collected on a daily basis from cracks in the area of Highway 130; no changes in temperature, crack width, or gas emissions have been noted for several days.

Volcanic gas emissions remain very high from Fissure 8 eruptions. Continuing trade wind conditions are expected to bring VOG to the southern and western parts of the Island of Hawaii. VOG information can be found at https://vog.ivhhn.org/

The ocean entry is a hazardous area. Venturing too close to an ocean entry on land or the ocean exposes you to flying debris from sudden explosive interaction between lava and water. Also, the lava delta is unstable because it is built on unconsolidated lava fragments and sand. This loose material can easily be eroded away by surf, causing the new land to become unsupported and slide into the sea. Additionally, the interaction of lava with the ocean creates "laze", a corrosive seawater plume laden with hydrochloric acid and fine volcanic particles that can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs.

Magma continues to be supplied to the Lower East Rift Zone. Seismicity remains relatively low in the area with numerous small magnitude earthquakes and low amplitude background tremor. Higher amplitude tremor is occasionally being recorded on seismic stations close to the ocean entry.

Additional ground cracking and outbreaks of lava in the area of the active fissures are possible. Residents downslope of the region of fissures should heed all Hawaii County Civil Defense messages and warnings.

Kīlauea Volcano Summit

At 07:51 AM HST, after approximately 15 hours of elevated seismicity, a collapse explosion occurred at the summit producing an ash-poor steam plume that rose about 500 ft above the ground surface (~4,500 ft above sea level) before drifting to the SW. The energy released by the event was equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Seismicity dropped abruptly from a high of 30-35 earthquakes per hour (many in the magnitude 2-3 range) prior to the collapse explosion down to 10 or fewer earthquakes per hour afterwards. Inward slumping of the rim and walls of Halemaʻumaʻu continues in response to ongoing subsidence at the summit.

Sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano's summit have dropped to levels that are about half those measured prior to the onset of the current episode of eruptive activity. This gas and minor amounts of ash are being transported downwind, with small bursts of ash and gas accompanying intermittent explosive activity.

Volcanic Activity Summary: Earthquake activity at Great Sitkin Volcano has increased above background levels over the past day. Numerous small, shallow earthquakes are occurring beneath the summit at rates as high as 10-20 per hour. It is uncertain if this unrest will lead to any eruptive activity but this remains a possibility given the general degree of unrest at Great Sitkin over the past several months. Thus AVO is raising the Aviation Color Code and Alert Level to YELLOW /ADVISORY.

AVO detected a brief steam and ash explosion at Great Sitkin on June 10, and earthquake activity then declined to background levels over a period of about 2 weeks. Over the past several days, nothing significant has been observed in satellite data and no other signs of unrest have been detected or reported to AVO.

Great Sitkin Volcano is monitored by a five-station seismic network on Great Sitkin Island and with additional seismic stations on the nearby islands of Igitkin, Adak, Kagalaska, and Kanaga. A six-element infrasound array to detect explosions (atmospheric pressure waves) was installed on Adak Island in June, 2017, although it is currently (June 2018) only partly operational. AVO also uses satellite imagery to monitor Great Sitkin Volcano.

Remarks: Great Sitkin Volcano is a basaltic andesite volcano that occupies most of the northern half of Great Sitkin Island, a member of the Andreanof Islands group in the central Aleutian Islands. It is located 43 km (26 miles) east of the community of Adak. Great Sitkin erupted at least three times in the 20th century, most recently in 1974. That eruption produced at least one ash cloud that likely exceeded an altitude of 25,000 ft above sea level. A poorly documented eruption occurred in 1945, also producing a lava dome that was partially destroyed in the 1974 eruption. A seismic swarm occurred from July 2016 through the end of 2017.

This morning, the summit seismicity is at 25-35 earthquakes per hour as we await the next collapse/explosive event. Inward slumping of the rim and walls of Halemaʻumaʻu continues in response to ongoing subsidence at the summit.

Sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano's summit have dropped to levels that are about half those measured prior to the onset of the current episode of eruptive activity. This gas and minor amounts of ash are being transported downwind, with small bursts of ash and gas accompanying intermittent explosive activity.

The energy released by the event was equivalent to a M5.3 earthquake. After the collapse/explosive event, seismicity dropped abruptly from a high of 20-25 earthquakes per hour (many in the magnitude 2-3 range) prior to the collapse explosion down to 5 or fewer earthquakes per hour afterwards. Inward slumping of the rim and walls of Halemaʻumaʻu continues in response to ongoing subsidence at the summit.

Heavy clouds obscured visual and radar measurement of the plume; however, ash-poor plumes have only risen 1000-20000 ft above the ground surface during recent similar events. The energy released by the event was equivalent to a M5.1 earthquake. After the collapse/explosive event, seismicity dropped abruptly for several hours but has since returned to 20-30 earthquakes per hour, a number of which are in the magnitude 2-3 range. Inward slumping of the rim and walls of Halemaʻumaʻu continues in response to ongoing subsidence at the summit.

Sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano's summit have dropped to levels that are about half those measured prior to the onset of the current episode of eruptive activity. This gas and minor amounts of ash are being transported downwind, with small bursts of ash and gas accompanying intermittent explosive activity.

Magma continues to be supplied to the Lower East Rift Zone. Seismicity remains relatively low in the area with numerous small magnitude earthquakes and low amplitude background tremor. Low amplitude tremor increased slightly on June 29 associated with renewed activity at Fissure 22. Higher amplitude tremor is occasionally being recorded on seismic stations close to the ocean entry.

Additional ground cracking and outbreaks of lava in the area of the active fissures are possible. Residents downslope of the region of fissures should heed all Hawaii County Civil Defense messages and warnings.

Kīlauea Volcano Summit

After the 02:17 AM HST July 3, a collapse explosion event at Kīlauea's summit, seismicity dropped abruptly for several hours but has since returned to 20-40 earthquakes per hour, a number of which are in the magnitude 2-3 range. Another collapse explosion is expected within the next few hours. Inward slumping of the rim and walls of Halemaʻumaʻu continues in response to ongoing subsidence at the summit.

Sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano's summit have dropped to levels that are about half those measured prior to the onset of the current episode of eruptive activity. This gas and minor amounts of ash are being transported downwind, with small bursts of ash and gas accompanying intermittent explosive activity.

The southern margin of the flow is unchanged from yesterday, and about 500 m (0.3 mi) from the boat ramp at Isaac Hale Park.

Unrest continues at Cleveland volcano. No significant activity was observed in cloudy satellite data over the past day. Webcam views of the summit were obscured by clouds. Nothing significant detected in seismic or pressure sensor (infrasound) data during the last 24 hours.

Cleveland volcano is monitored by only two seismic stations, which restricts AVO's ability to detect precursory unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.

Great Sitkin Volcano is monitored with a local real-time seismic network, which will typically allow AVO to detect changes in unrest that may lead to an explosive eruption. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption would be accomplished using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

Fissure 8 continues to erupt lava into the channel leading northeastward from the vent. No overflows were reported this morning and lava levels in the channel appear low. At the coast, the south edge of the lava flow has not advanced westward in the past day, and remains less than 175 m (0.1 mi) from the Pohoiki boat ramp in Isaac Hale Park. Lava along the western edge of the flow is fuming and may start oozing from this edge. Lava is actively entering the ocean along a broad 2 km (1.2 mi) flow front centered near the former Ahalanui Beach Park.

No other fissures are active this morning.

Pele's hair and other lightweight volcanic glass fragments from the lava fountain at Fissure 8 continue to fall downwind of the fissure, dusting the ground within a few hundred meters (yards) of the vent. High winds may waft lighter particles to greater distances. Residents are urged to minimize exposure to these volcanic particles, which can cause skin and eye irritation similar to volcanic ash.

HVO field crews are on site tracking activity as conditions allow and are reporting information to Hawaii County Civil Defense. Observations are also collected on a daily basis from cracks in the area of Highway 130; no significant changes in temperature, crack width, or gas emissions have been noted for several days.

The ocean entry is a hazardous area. The interaction of lava with the ocean creates "laze", a corrosive seawater plume laden with hydrochloric acid and fine volcanic particles that drifts downwind and can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs. Close to the ocean entry, flying debris from explosive interaction between lava and water is a primary hazard. Additionally, submarine magma-water interaction can result in explosive activity beyond the visible lava delta, creating a hazard that extends offshore. The lava delta is unstable because it is built up to 800 m (0.5 mi) from the former coastline on unconsolidated lava fragments and sand. This loose material can easily be eroded away by surf, causing the new land to become unsupported and slide into the sea.

Magma continues to be supplied to the Lower East Rift Zone. Seismicity remains relatively low although higher amplitude tremor is occasionally being recorded on seismic stations close to the ocean entry.

Additional ground cracking and outbreaks of lava in the area of the active fissures are possible at any time. Residents downslope of the region of fissures should remain informed and heed all Hawaii County Civil Defense messages and warnings.

Kīlauea Volcano Summit

The most recent collapse event occurred at 12:08 p.m. HST July 29, and was similar in character and magnitude to previous events. Seismicity is slowly increasing and has been 25-30 earthquakes per hour this morning. Inward slumping of the rim and walls of Halemaʻumaʻu continues.

Last night at 10:02 PM, an earthquake on Kilauea's south flank was felt as far north as Hilo by a few people. The magnitude-4.1 (NEIC) earthquake was weaker than recent summit earthquakes but it was felt more widely, possibly due to its greater depth of 7 km (compared with 2 km for summit earthquakes).

Sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano's summit are very low. This gas and minor amounts of ash resuspended by wind are being transported downwind. Small bursts of ash and gas may coincide with the summit collapse events. The summit region is occasionally impacted by sulfur dioxide from the lower East Rift Zone eruption.

Yesterday afternoon, a brush fire started near the PGV access road at the south edge of the fissure 8 channel that burned much of the vegetation around the road as well as the west side of Pu`u Honua`ula. The fire also damaged one of our telemetry hubs that relayed data from several geophysical instruments in the area as well as the PGcam. We will try to get this repaired as soon as possible but the public should be aware that these operations may not be restored for some time.

Field crews determined the advancing overflow had ceased by 21:00 HST but that fires were still burning. Further downstream overflows were concentrated in the wide lava field west and south-southwest of Kapoho cone, also igniting small fires in adjacent vegetation.

This morning's overflight was postponed till early afternoon.

No other fissures are active this morning.

Field observations and UAS overflight images indicate reduced output of lava from fissure 8 today. The significance of this change is not yet clear and hazardous conditions remain in the area.

An HVO and UAS crew will be in the area overnight to monitor and track additional changes. An overflight of the area will occur early tomorrow, weather permitting.

It is common for eruptions to wax and wane or pause completely. A return to high levels of lava discharge or new outbreaks in the area of active fissures are possible at any time. Despite the apparent slow-down at fissure 8, lava remains active in the main channel, minor overflows are reported, and the ocean entry is active at this time.

Residents should remain informed and heed Hawaii County Civil Defense messages and warnings.

Kīlauea Volcano Summit

Changes are also occurring at the volcano’s summit. The most recent collapse event occurred two day ago, at 11:55 a.m. HST August 2. Rates of earthquakes began to increase soon after as has been typical leading to the next collapse event, but today the rate decreased to a low level without a collapse event. The rate of deformation at the summit as measured by tiltmeter and GPS instruments is also much reduced.

Summit and LERZ changes considered together imply that the rate of magma leaving the summit has decreased. How long this condition will persist is unknown. It is possible that outflow will pick up again, resulting in renewed summit area deflation leading to another collapse event and renewed eruption vigor on the LERZ.

HVO will monitor data through the night.

The next status report will be issued tomorrow morning unless significant changes occur.

This morning's helicopter overflight confirmed a significant reduction in lava output from fissure 8. HVO field geologists observed low levels of fountaining with the fissure 8 spatter cone and largely crusted lava in the spillway and channel system downstream. There were a few sluggish seeps and ooze-outs near Halekamahina and Kapoho Crater. Lava continues to ooze into the ocean along a broad flow front and laterally toward Pohoiki but is still about 70 m (230 ft) southeast of the boat ramp.

The significance of this change is not yet clear and hazardous conditions remain in the area. HVO field crews and the UAS team will monitor activity throughout the day.

It is common for eruptions to wax and wane or pause completely. A return to high levels of lava discharge or new outbreaks in the area of active fissures could occur at any time.

Residents should remain informed and heed Hawaii County Civil Defense messages and warnings.

Kīlauea Volcano Middle East Rift Zone

On Friday, gas measurements of the Puʻu ʻŌʻō plume indicated an emission rate of over 1,000 tons/day of SO2, the highest rate from this vent in several years. Readers may recall that a white plume has been observed issuing from Puʻu ʻŌʻō over the past several weeks. HVO will attempt to overfly Puʻu ʻŌʻō as soon as possible to evaluate any other significant changes within and around the vent.

The most recent collapse event occurred three day ago, at 11:55 a.m. HST August 2. Rates of earthquakes began to increase soon after as has been typical leading to the next collapse event, but yesterday the rate decreased to a low level without a collapse event. Later in the morning, ground crews found the upper channel largely devoid of lava confirming that the channel is empty to at least the vicinity of Kapoho Crater where a short section of spiny active lava in a channel was present. There were small active ooze outs near the coast on the Kapoho Bay and Ahalanui lobes but the laze plume was greatly diminished. Active lava is close to the Pohoiki boat ramp but has not advanced significantly toward it.

The significance of this change is not yet clear and hazardous conditions remain in the area. HVO field crews and the UAS team will monitor activity throughout the day and overnight.

The surface of the lava lake was about 5-10 m below the spillway entrance. Active lava remains close to the Pohoiki boat ramp but has not advanced significantly toward it.

Kīlauea Volcano Middle East Rift Zone

Gas measurements of the Puʻu ʻŌʻō plume taken on Monday and Tuesday morning indicated a reduced SO2 emission rate lower than the measurement last Friday and similar to what has been observed over the past three months. No active lava was observed in the crater on an overflight on August 6th.

Kīlauea Volcano Summit

The volcano's summit remains quiet following the most recent collapse at 11:55 a.m. HST August 2nd. This continues a significant departure from the pattern of seismicity and deformation over the past several months, with very low rates of seismicity continuing today. The deformation at the summit as measured by tiltmeter and GPS instruments has virtually stopped.

Summit and LERZ changes considered together imply that the rate of magma leaving the summit to feed the Lower East Rift Zone eruption has decreased. How long this condition will persist is unknown. It is possible that outflow will pick up again, resulting in renewed summit area deflation leading to another collapse event and renewed eruption vigor on the LERZ.

HVO will continue to monitor Kīlauea closely for any signs of change in activity.

The next status report will be issued tomorrow morning unless significant changes occur.

Kīlauea Volcano Lower East Rift Zone

Activity and lava output from Fissure 8 remains low and there have been no signs of reactivation or new intrusion. Up-rift of Fissure 8, Fissures 9, 10, and 24, and down-rift Fissures 13, 23, 3, 21 and 7, continue to steam. Ground crews and overflights continue to monitor these for signs of new activity. This morning's overflight crew observed a crusted lava pond deep inside the steaming cone at a level significantly lower than when viewed Tuesday morning.

No active lava was observed in the crater on an overflight on August 6th. This morning, the steam plume appears wispy and intermittent.

A magnitude-4.4 earthquake occurred southeast of Puʻu ʻŌʻō this morning at 6:50 a.m. The earthquake had no significant effect on the status of Kīlauea activity except to generate a brief dust plume from Puʻu ʻŌʻō several minutes later.

This continues a significant departure from the pattern of seismicity and deformation over the past several months, with very low rates of seismicity continuing today. Except for a very gradual deflation, the deformation at the summit as measured by tiltmeter and GPS instruments has stopped.

Summit and LERZ changes considered together imply that the rate of magma leaving the summit to feed the lower East Rift Zone eruption has significantly decreased. How long this condition will persist is unknown. It is possible that outflow will pick up again, resulting in renewed summit area deflation leading to another collapse event and renewed eruption vigor on the LERZ.
