Iceland has extended 20cm this last week as magma in #Bardarbunga has come up between tectonic plates. Normal year it spreads 2cm #ashtag

post-7292-0-59992700-1408778870_thumb.jp

Earthquake count:

  • Magnitude less than 1 in all:  559
  • Magnitude 1 to 2 in all:  998
  • Magnitude 2 to 3 in all:  139
  • Magnitude more than 3 in all:  13
  • Total: 1709

Clear NNE travel since the swarm commenced last weekend, also such a wide range on the depth

How can they be sure that an eruption won't happen?

Not sure Karyo, that longer span time line of Activity would point to an eruption..?

Guess it is still a watch and wait, not imminent but cannot be excluded.

The interesting one is that everything I have read points towards a different kind of eruption from Eyjafjallajökull. Flooding the key concern vs. impact on air traffic.

earthquake activity certainly on the uptick now with the smaller quakes gaining magnitude and these could well go up more as the scientists have a look at all the info

The block of the last couple of days seems to have given way now - all the new earthquakes are trending towards the edge of the glacier.

Shows a 3 D image of the strenght, depth and timing of eruptions, with table and also cam. Neat site.

Some more in depth explanation of the processes going on courtesy of Dave McGarvie - worth a read.

Explains the stealth like movement of the magma and the pattern of earthquakes, touches on historical eruptions.
