It appears Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano is getting active again. This weekend the volcano began to spew ash and gas. This prompted officials to restrict access of the immediate region surrounding the volcano. Popocatepetl volcano, located in Mexico, is considered an active, and often referred to as a "violent" volcano. On Saturday reports emerged the volcano began to spew a dense cloud of ash over central Mexico. CNN reported Popocatepetl shot out an emission of ash and water vapor into the air that was about 1,300 feet (400 meters). The ash fell on the towns of San Nicolas de los Ranchos, Huejotzingo and parts of Puebla. Throughout Saturday the emissions reportedly grew stronger and this prompted the Mexican government to restrict access within 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) of Popocatepetl. "This activity was preceded by 12 low intensity exhalations which were followed by small emissions of water vapor and gas. Also, at 19:31 h a volcanotectonic microseism was registered, with a preliminary magnitude of 1.9.," said government officials in an April 13 report. Based on the increased activity, the Volcanic Alert Level is currently at Yellow Phase 2. In April of last year, "El Popo", as the volcano is affectionately called by locals, showed significant signs of reawakening and the alert levels were raised to Yellow Phase 3, the third-highest warning. However, Popocatepetl did not see a full eruption, although for a time just about a year ago, many people on alert for possible evacuation. Is this week's increased activity an indicator "El Popo" will explode? Experts are carefully monitoring Popocatepetl 24 hours a day, according to reports.

A strong earthquake swarm, presumably caused by a magmatic intrusion, has started Wednesday at Miyake volcano in the Japanese Izu Islands.
On Wednesday alone, JMA recorded 136 earthquakes with magnitudes up to an earthquake of magnitude 5.6, which was widely felt in the region.
The quakes' hypocenters are clustered in a NNW-SSW trending area about 10 km west of the island, at depths of 5-15 km.
You can find the list of earthquakes at this page.

Out of interest how long will it be until volcanic activity is possible on the mainland of Great Britain?

A series of seismic events within the volcano El Ruiz shook towns near Bogota over the weekend, as cameras from the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) captured geysers of hot gas and ash. Constant seismic activity in the last three days has experts hyper vigilant. Nevado del Ruiz, a hulking 17,457 ft volcano straddling the border of the Caldas and Tolima departments, is the most observed volcano in the country. El Ruiz took the world stage in 1985 when a tragic eruption destroyed Armero, claiming an estimated 25,000 lives. The largest earthquake, of 4.0 magnitude with a depth of 4.6 miles, was reported by the SGC on Sunday morning. The seismic activity registered since April 13th through yesterday's earthquake has been "associated with fracturing of rock on the interior of the volcanic structure," according to the SGC website. El Ruiz is a stratovolcano, meaning that it is made of alternating layers of lava and hardened volcanic ash. The eruptions from El Ruiz can cause lahars, or flows of mud and debris. The eruption before the lahar which destroyed Armero was relatively small. El Ruiz has been active for an estimated two million years.

Mount Etna burst into life once more at the weekend as it shot lava, ash and smoke hundreds of feet into the air. Residents had been warned about the imminent eruption as grey smoke has been seen rising from the volcano for days. On Saturday, red hot lava was spat into the air as the volcano violently erupted once more. It is the thirteenth time Etna has erupted this year. Such is the scale of the activity that concerned residents have called on the Government to introduce a state of emergency. Experts said the latest activity posed no risk to local residents or towns. Stefano Gresta, president of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, said it was 'very spectacular, but not risky', according to youreporternews.it.

The airport was only briefly closed and the eruption caused very little disruption. The huge burst on Saturday could be seen by miles around and witnessed by residents of Catania and Taormina. Ash was sent flying down Etna's slopes and smoke rose more than 3,000ft into the air. Locals said the latest eruption is the most 'intense' of the year so far. The eruptions ended shortly before midnight on Saturday, although further bursts of activity were recorded yesterday. A series of minor earthquakes, measuring up to 2.55 on the Richter scale were also recorded. Earlier this month, mayors of towns surrounding the volcano called for 'urgent' government action. In a joint statement, the politicians said they wanted a state of emergency to be declared. Mount Etna is Europe's tallest active volcano. After past explosions, authorities in Sicily have been forced to build dams or dig ditches to divert lava away from people's homes.

Just wondering what a state of emergency would achieve. Not a lot. Etna does seem rather active at the moment.

Hekla volcano (Iceland): strong inflation suggest volcano could be close to erupting

Tuesday Apr 30, 2013 18:44 PM | BY: T
Posted Image
GPS-measured deformation of HEKR station (Univ. Iceland), north of the volcano

The famous Icelandic volcano is showing further signs that indicate an eruption could occur in a near future. Significant rapid inflation, concentrated in the northern part of the volcano, has been detected since early April and likely represents accumulation of rising magma underneath.

Already in mid March this year, an earthquake swarm, volcanic tremor and deformation caused an alert, because it was believed that this was caused by rapid movement of magma under the volcano.

The last eruption of the volcano was in March 2000, and it is estimated that by now, a significantly larger volume of magma has since then accumulated beneath the volcano. This would mean that a new eruption should be expected to be larger than the last one. Hekla's eruptions normally begin with a powerful explosive phase, and could pose a significant hazard to anyone in close (less than 10 km) proximity during the onset of it.

I hope Hekla erupts during the next 3-4 months so that we have the benefit of the long days to observe the eruption.

I was actually on Etna the Saturday before (20th) when it erupted for the 12th time this year.  Sure there was lots of ash, smoke and rumbling and I did get a bit dirty!  But, can't see why a state of emergency would be declared.  The roads remained open, albeit covered with ash - even down to sea level where the main Catania-Messina motorway runs.  They are heavily dependent on tourism and a state of emergency would no doubt keep the tourists away.

Australia's only active volcano is rumbling fiercely, with new NASA photos revealing its lava lake has overflowed its crater.

The volcano in question, Big Ben, is happily located on Mawson Peak in the remote southern reaches of the Indian Ocean on Heard Island, an Australian territory. People only bother to visit Heard and its neighbour McDonald Island every couple of years, because there's little there but chilly wastelands and the territory is a nature reserve people aren't allowed to visit without a permit. Even fisherfolk chasing the apparently tasty patagonian toothfish, aka Chilean Sea Bass, don't often bother landing.

Lava fountains from the New SE crater (Etna Trekking webcam)

The 13th New SE crater paroxysm is occurring this evening. Tall lava fountains rise from the central vent of the cone, and a lava flow has rapidly descended the slope into Valle del Bove. A dense tephra plume is rising several kilometers above the volcano and drifting to the NE where ash- and lapilli fall is occurring.

hi candice

this is a new crater so i would assume there must be some concern re this potential of this

problem is with this

if you put tourism before safety there could be heads rolling

remember what happened to the scientists who did not predict the previous earthquake recently

we will see what happens with this

This new crater formed in February, whilst it is periodically chucking out lava and lapilli it's a good thing.  It's when it stops I would worry.

Heard island volcano (Australia): satellite images confirm active lava flows since Dec 2012

Thursday May 02, 2013 14:03 PM | BY: T

NASA Earth Observatory image of Hear Island on 20 April 2013 by Jesse Allen and Robert Simmon

Effusive eruptive activity at the remote volcano continues. A recent satellite picture shows a new lava flow on the SW flank of Mawson Peak. A MODIS hot spot is visible as well.

Starting in October 2012, satellites measured subtle signals that suggested volcanic activity on remote Heard Island. The recent satellite images (NASA Earth Observatory) have now provided proof of an eruption otherwise likely undetected.

By April 7, 2013, Mawson’s steep-walled summit crater had filled, and a trickle of lava had spilled down the volcano’s southwestern flank. On April 20 the lava flow remained visible, and had even widened slightly just below the summit.

Strong tremor during yesterday

Lava continues to intermittently flow over and out of vents at the rim and the base of the NE crater. Yesterday, the active flow front had reached about half way down the Sciara, local guides reported.
Today, tremor has decreased again a bit, but overflows remain active at least in the upper parts of the slope. Relatively large explosions and near-constant rockfalls on the Sciara continue during the whole time.

Scientists say there were two or three minor explosions at Alaska's Cleveland Volcano on Saturday morning. The volcano in the Aleutian Islands is 940 miles southwest of Anchorage. The Alaska Volcano Observatory and U.S. Geological Survey say satellites detected a small, low-altitude ash cloud and elevated surface temperatures at the summit. The Federal Aviation Administration said there are no flight restrictions as a result. The volcano's most recent significant eruption began in February 2001 and featured three explosive events that sent ash clouds as high 39,000 feet above sea level. It also produced a rubbly lava flow and hot avalanche that reached the sea. The most recent minor ash emissions were observed in November 2012.

Since 1 May, activity has been increasing again from relatively low levels during the weeks before. Over the past 3 days, several explosions have produced ash plumes rising to 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude and on most days, there have been 3-4 daily explosions (for Sakurajima, this is a large number).

Plosky Tolbachik volcano activity intensifies in Kamchatka
6/05/2013 ITAR-TASS

Observers in Kamchatka have registered intensification of the activity of the Plosky Tolbachik volcano, the Kamchatka volcano observatory reported on Monday, referring to data of the scientists that work at the Tolud base in the immediate vicinity of the eruption site.

The activity intensification was recorded on May 4 “in the lateral outbreak crater,†the observatory specified. Lava is gushing there, ejected to a height of 100 metres.

According to the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), high seismic activity is registered on the volcano - the giant mount with a height exceeding 3.85 thousand metres above sea level, is vibrating with an amplitude of 3.25 microns per second.

The eruption of the Plosky Tolbachik volcano continues for the sixth consecutive month. In the early days of the eruption lava flows from Plosky Toblachik destroyed two bases of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology that were located in the Tolbachink dale.

Increased seismic activity was detected at the volcano and VSI raised the alert level to 3 out of 4 ("Siaga", "warning") yesterday. Sudden phreatic explosions could occur with little warning at the volcano and present a significant hazard to visitors to the crater, which is a popular tourist site due to its varied, intense hydrothermal activity and colorful active fumaroles.

Philippine volcano Mount Mayon in deadly eruption

A volatile volcano has erupted in the Philippines, with five people reported dead.

Mount Mayon, 330km (206 miles) south-east of the capital Manila, sent a cloud of ash and rocks into the sky early on Tuesday. The ash blast caught a group climbing the mountain, which is famous for its near-perfect cone. At least seven other climbers were hurt in the eruption, which lasted for just over a minute.

"Five killed and seven are injured, that is the latest report," National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council chief Eduardo del Rosario said. Four of those killed were German nationals and the fifth was their Filipino guide, the NDRRMC said later in a statement. A guide on the mountain told a local television station by telephone that those who died were hit by the rocks that rained down on them after the ash blast. Local reports said about 20 people were climbing the mountain when the eruption occurred.

"It was so sudden that many of us panicked," Jun Marana, a local resident, told AFP news agency by telephone. "When we stepped out we saw this huge column against the blue sky." In an advisory, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology called the eruption a "small phreatic event" that lasted about 73 seconds and sent ash 500m into the air. No intensification of volcanic activity was observed, it said, and the alert level would not be raised. But it said small steam and ash ejections could occur with little or no warning and advised against entry to the 6-km (4-mile) radius Permanent Danger Zone around the volcano.

Chief state seismologist Renato Solidum described the eruption as a "stream driven explosion", a "normal process" in any volcano. There was no need for local residents around the mountain to evacuate, he said. Mt Mayon has erupted at least 48 times since records began. The most violent eruption, in 1814, killed more than 1,200 people and devastated several towns. The most recent eruption was in late 2009, when tens of thousands of local residents were forced to evacuate as the volcano rumbled back to life.

An explosive eruption has started at Popocatepetl outside of Mexico City. The restless Mexican volcano has been producing steam-and-ash plumes intermittently over the past year, but tonight there is a significant ash plume accompanied by large incadescent blocks being thrown down the slopes of the volcano. Show the growing ash column and eventual explosion that occurred at 20:14 PM local time in Mexico. The ash plume has been spotted as high as 7.6 km / 25,000 feet heading to the southeast according to the latest Washington VAAC update. However, the first local reports put the ash plume at 3.2 km / 10,500 feet. Before this activity, CENAPRED had the volcano on Yellow-Level 2 alert status.
