Mount Etna Erupts Again

Italy's Mount Etna came back to life again early on Thursday with an eruption that sent lava down its slopes and a cloud of ash into the sky, forcing the nearby Catania airport to reduce flights.

According to Italian news agency ANSA, it's the 13th eruption since the beginning of the year.

The volcano also spewed out ash, which rained down and forced Catania's Fontanarossa airport to cancel or divert some flights.

No injuries have been reported and people have turned out to watch the lava flowing from the volcano.

Etna has several inhabited villages on its slopes.

The volcanology institute in Catania, eastern Sicily, is constantly monitoring Etna which is considered to be Europe's most active volcano. Its last major eruption was in 1992.

Yeah they are pumping cold water down into the bedrock again at Hengill which is triggering all the quakes there.... amazing how they run most things off geothermal over there.

I'd have thought that would be rather a dangerous thing to do, given that if they pump water into a very hot area of rock, that could set off an very bad explosion?

Or is that what the earthquakes represent?

Humans will never learn will they, (i'm glad i'm a fish Posted Image)

It's not being evacuated, it's a mistranslation originating from this page or something like it http://www.avcan.org/?m=Noticias&a=noticia&N=894

The line "trasladar la informacion a la poblacion de EL Hierro" has been interpreted as meaning "relocate the population of El Hierro ", when it just saying the information will be passed on to the public.

Essentially there was a meeting of scientists and local officials so they could gather info to better inform the local population.

ah ok, still, they do seem concerned.

mind you, after over 4000 quakes, you cant blame them for being a bit nervous!

I am glad they are taking it seriously and prepare for the eruption. I wonder what eruption (VEI wise) we can expect from Tambora! There have been some massive ones in the past but it sometimes gives moderate eruptions.

Perched lava ponds have developed outside of Pu‘u ‘ÅŒ‘Å crater

Since overflows to the west began yesterday morning (9/14), perched lava ponds have developed outside of Pu‘u ‘ÅŒ‘Å crater on the cone’s upper west flank. Unless something else gives, these ponds will likely continue to grow taller, impounded by chilled lava from the ponds themselves. Overflows from the ponds will continue to mantle the west flank of Pu‘u ‘ÅŒ‘Å. .....http://hvo.wr.usgs.g...ate/images.html

Very strong harmonic tremor in Katla being picked up on several of the monitoring stations... been running for the last 2 hours or so seeing some earthquake activity now too.

These spikes have been a characteristic of the last couple of months... the depth also suggests that it could be magma on the move again.

What are the weather conditions in Iceland today? Could wind be interfering?
