Google translation of latest news of Merapi eruption from METRO NEWS.

Metrotvnews.com, Sleman: Merapi eruption thousands of back staggering around the slopes of Merapi, which are in post evacuation, Thursday (4 / 11) at around 23:30 West Indonesia Time. Thousands of refugees at the Village Hall Hargobinangun, District Cangkringan, Sleman, who is on a radius of 15 kilometers from the summit of Merapi advised to evacuate. Dozens of trucks and cars used for patrol officers to evacuate the refugees. There should be no vehicles or people that return, in addition to the trucks to evacuate the refugees.

Merapi eruption this time, two times larger than the eruption on Thursday morning. According to Metro TV Reporter Lalita Gandaputri, Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Surono who was contacted by telephone, Merapi is going through continuous eruption of an explosive nature. Then the party PVMBG urged people who are safe as far as 15 kilometers radius away soon. Tonight also secure refugee PVMBG set radius to 20 miles from the peak of Merapi.

Eruption earthquakes accompanied by rumbling sounds also cause rain that accompanied the volcanic ash pebbles. For that PVMBG continue to urge people to use a mask. Moreover, clouds glide heat is invisible and difficult to predict its direction. From the observation PVMBG, Merapi eruption this time bigger than the previous eruption, because of the volcanic smoke up to as high as 8 kilometers from the peak of Merapi. (Riz)

It sounds bad as I have now heard that they are advising people 20Kms from volcano to evacuate now.

A few posts ago, I posted links to Icelandic Tremor graphs....this is the one for Merapi.

Things are looking very bad there and I hope that it doesn't turn any worse for Indonesia.

Mount Merapi, in Indonesia, erupted overnight, killing 58 people and bringing the death toll to more 113 since its current volatility began last week. Local hospital officials said 58 charred bodies had been recovered today. More than 70 people were injured, many of them critically.

"We're totally overwhelmed here," Heru Nogroho, a spokesman for the nearby Sardjito hospital, said. It was the deadliest day Merapi had seen for nearly 80 years. Men, their faces covered with ash, streamed down the mountain on motorcycles after the eruption, which happened just before midnight. They were followed by truckloads of women and crying children.Soldiers helped clear bodies from the village of Bronggang, which – nine miles from the crater – had been designated as a safe zone until today. Local television carried an interview with Rizal, a forensic doctor from the police identification unit. "It is possible the death toll will rise as we continue to search for victims," he said.

Eyewitnesses saw blackened bodies being carried into the Sardjito hospital. "Their clothes had melted onto their skin," a Reuters photographer said. The Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said the government would cover the cost of livestock lost in the disaster in an effort to convince villagers to evacuate. "There is no sign Merapi is abating," he said.

A column of ash billowed at least 2.5 miles (4km) above the crater as authorities evacuated villages within a 12-mile radius of the volcano, the country's leading vulcanologist, Surono, said. "It's much worse than in the past. We cannot predict its behaviour," he added

Up to 100,000 people are thought to be on the move as a violent volcanic eruption in Indonesia intensifies. Mount Merapi exploded into life once again this morning spewing searing hot gas six miles at over 750 degrees Celsius. Children's charity Plan International has launched an appeal to help 20,000 people fleeing the mountain. "It's raining volcanic ash and rocks," says Plan's acting country director in Indonesia, Nono Sumarsono. "Small rocks can reach nearly 10 miles away and ash 20 miles.

"The danger zone has been widened and a large influx of displaced people are coming further down to new evacuation centres - it's predicted there could be more than 100,000 people on the move."Most people are afraid to go outside the evacuation centres because of the thick volcanic ash in the air with visibility at just 20ins. "People were fleeing in panic and only have what they could carry," says Mr Sumarsono, confirming an urgent need for food, water, mats, blankets, hygiene kits and sanitation. The escalating intensity of Merapi's eruptions mean the charity may well scale-up its aid efforts in the area. Plan began distributing blankets, mats, and hygiene kits to 20,000 people after the initial eruption last week.

The charity is also working on 50 emergency latrines and setting up 20 temporary schools for 2,000 children. "The situation is feared to continue as Merapi is still spewing clouds of hot gas and ash - its booming explosions are keeping people on alert day and night," says Mr Sumarsono.

Reuters now reporting that atleast 100,000 people are on the move away from merapi.

All very quiet on the iceland front... in fact it the quietest for some time under myrdalsjokull, for the last few months there have been daily tremors every 2-3 hours apart at the least now all quiet.

as for grimsvotn well this is still one to watch, the water seems now to have largely drained and its now a case of waiting to see whether the release of this pressure is enough to see an eruption phase begin here.

Merapi plume now at 55000 feet and it's approaching a VEI 4 event. With 4 out of 5 seismic stations down, experts cannot say if there will be a cataclysmic Pinatubo style eruption or the mountain quietens down. Some experts are warning of a massive eruption at any moment. The mountain is having silent periods now which is very worrying.

I just hope it doesn't happen.

Early reports of 122 deaths now and the government has brought all the livestock from the slopes of Merapi so that worried locals don't have to return back home.

I am glad for this - they have been risking their lives for their only livelihood - these people have little enough, at least they will have something to start over with now.

Nice picture showing plume above the clouds and if you scroll down you see the track of the pyroclastic flow. http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=46837

What happened to the world between 17:50 and 18:40 MDT ?????    Some seismic event all over the world. http://aslwww.cr.usg...ata/heli2.shtml

Hi. I picked up on this a few days back when this was being reported:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReIzME18ilc&feature=player_embedded

This resulted in quite a few discussions (especially on USA websites) The consensus of opinion materialised that this was caused by a deep quake (347 kms) centred around Papua New Guinea with a magnitude of 5.8. What some of the more knowledgeable were saying was that it is normal for all seismographs to register activity if the quake is very deep. I now notice that some are not as ready to accept this explanation because a 5.8 would not have been large enough to have this effect. You can follow the discussions here:

Merapi still on going with ash being sent up too 20,000ft in the iar. Death Toll now sadly risen to 156. Also it seems one airline is considering resuming flights. Not sensible.

When I checked this morning, the Indonesian area had only 3 earthquakes in the last 24 hours. There now appear to have been a few more. Merapi clearing her throat for another blow maybe?

Merapi although still erupting has calmed down from previous days. Ash column up to around 3000 ft. Source http://bigthink.com/blogs/eruptions/

There's also some very good and in some cases very graphic photos here http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/11/mount_merapis_eruptions.html so if you're squeamish don't look.

Merapi continues with lower levels of activity while Bulusan in the Philippines continues too increase in activity.

A good read about how the media get things wrong http://blogs.agu.org/magmacumlaude/2010/11/09/common-mistakes-in-reporting-on-volcanic-eruptions/

Thank you for the link, very useful!

I also wonder about any climate implication. It would help if there were any comparisons of this eruption to other recent ones. We also has the Sarichev eruption last month.

Reports are surfacing of another possible volcanic eruption in Iceland. Update to follow when information is gathered.
