Snow In Southern France 08.93.2010

We had about 5cms of the wet soggy stuff in our village 34310 Capestang though higher areas got much more.

The press are praising meteo France for the precision in their forecast but to be fair this was also forecast by the met office.

I doubt you would have liked the white stuff we had here since it was very wet and slushy, even so with a temp of +3C and about 8 or so cms it stuck around for most of the day. However I dare say you would have loved it above 500 metres where it was plentiful and powdery. Forecast is that the tramontaine is coming into play - it will feel really cold with that but temps should pick up again at the weekend eventually getting to about 21C in about 10 days time.

Interesting today - there was a bit of a frost last night and it was not until getting on towards midday when a bit of a thaw started to set in - beautiful day with lovely clear blue skies though the tramontaine was blowing a bit.

We decided to drive to Narbonne this afternoon to do some shopping but as we got halfway through Cuxac we were diverted off the main road, got lost and ended up going through the back lanes by Sallale d'Aude. Here the snow was very much deeper though most of the roads had dried off in the wind. Here there were quite deep drifts in places and in parts the snow was still blowing in the wind. At one point we were held up whilst a JCB was clearing the road of snow.

It was all looking like a Christmas Card scene and I was kicking myself for not having my camera with me. However when we got back to Capestang most of the snow had disappeared - still bloody cold though and there is still plenty of the white stuff around, mainly to the south and west of us.

We did our shopping and returned via our normal route and it became obvious that the road south of Cuxac had been blocked by snow because there were big piles of the stuff at the sides.

Snow settled right on the seashore in Barcelona- in the second week of March! Looking at the Weather Underground reports it managed this when the temp was 2-4C, and dewpoint 0-2C; is it only here that snow won't stick if the dewpoint is above freezing? AND it was preceded by hours of rain, which nearly always means no settling in these parts. There was even thundersnow at one point!

Exactly- here this winter we've had several occasions of snow refusing to settle, or even falling as sleet or rain, in temps and dewpoints of 0 or 1C. Most notably the afternoon/evening of Feb 23 when there were several hours of this:
