It's showing a rain/snow mix not sleet - there are reports of both rain and snow from the northwest of england currently so it's not as far out as you may think. It's never going to be 100% in terms of local conditions. It's actually showing rain/snow mix just outside sheffield with rain currently directly over sheffield but that may update soon. When you say way out, you're also missing the areas that are spot on - ie the rest of northern england, scotland and northern ireland..

I have always been very impressed with the snow /rain accuracy of the radar Paul. I assume this hasn't changed too much since the new version has been put in. Last month it was accurate with rain turning to snow within half an hour.

Beta 4 Now Live!

Fixes the Internet Explorer crash/slowdown issue (caused by excessive use of memory) and now has station data. Better zooms for IE and sharp images at maximum zoom level.

Your thoughts as always please...

The new radar has really come into its own this week. I've been able to track snow showers moving in from the North Sea with pinpoint accuracy. It was particularly impressive a couple of days ago when a shower moved south west within 1 km of here giving just a few flakes, I checked the new radar and sure enough we were on the very edge of a small but heavy shower whose centre was just 1km to the east whereas on the older system we were shown as being right under it.

It couldn't be better if I'd designed it myself, not that I'd be remotely capable of such technical alchemy.

If the map is zoomed out its fine, but closed in, smoothing seems essential in my view. Any breakthroughs there karl?

smoothed images will have to wait a little - i can't get our image processing to do any more than rounding the corners at the moment

I have a few thoughts:

- would there be any way of showing the ppt. intensity as a value when you hover over an area with the mouse?

- is it possible to limit the amount of time the ppt. disappears for in between viewing each frame?

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
