A surprisingly cold morning, the temperature dropped to -0.4c with a frost that quickly dissapeared once the cloud had come over. Still huge (upwards of 10 feet) snow piles around the council car parks.

Currently 5.2c with no trend.

A dry and bright morning so far with a few sunny intervals. There were clear skies to start the night with a ground frost but cloud increased before midnight and the temp' rose from an evening min' of 2.2c to a max' of 5.0c during the early hours before falling to around 3c by dawn. Despite the thaw the snow is hanging on for grim death, still 55% cover with an average depth of 7cm. Some of the exposed fields have only 10% cover as most of the snow blew into drifts but elsewhere there's between 40 and 90% cover and the snow is really hard and compacted. My own garden has had 100% snow cover since mid December.

Temp' currently is 3.5c

Rainfall in 24 hrs to 0900, 0.1 mm

Mean wind speed, 18 mph SW.

Quite a change in the weather since my last report. It's gone from dull and grey to sunshine and showers.

I much prefer it like this.

Mixture of sunshine and cloudy spells and feeling mild at around 7-8c.

Cycled home with neither gloves nor hat - felt like I'd emerged from a cocoon of clothing after the last few weeks. Instead the other problem of overheating in the big coat has appeared. You need it when setting off as it isn't that mild but after 10-15 mins you're too hot - the usual state of affairs for winter returns!

Still almost a month on from the shortest day now - another few weeks and we get daylight for the journey home...
