Basingstoke I would have thought would be warmer, what with being quite an Urban town. Certainly the town centre (which looks quite stunning with those French/Italian style restaurants situated either side on the way to the cinema under the canopy)

No doubt the town centre temperatures in Basingstoke would compare well with Reading - but the office is on a hill on the outskirts of Basingstoke, at about 170m ASL - it usually feels colder there than in Reading, but no doubt part of this is wind chill. I think Odiham is a fair comparison site.

In the meantime, here just outside Reading town centre the temperature has been steadily rising all day and is currently at its maximum so far of 5.5 deg C after an overnight low of 0.2 - we've narrowly missed an air frost with minima of 0.0-0.5 for several nights in a row here.

its up to 4.5C the highest since 27 December with 5.8C and that was the second highest since 14 December. It also rained today with no sign of even sleet-the first time there has been precip and nothing wintry in it for almost 4 weeks!

Thick freezing fog until 1100 when the temp' got above 0c; the fog has persisted all day though.

A short spell of snow this morning, quickly turning to sleet, then freezing rain which lasted a couple of hours and coated everything in ice. The thaw set in by midday and has continued since with any remaining rain dying away by 1230.

After the persistant cold we have endured for 4-5 weeks, today felt positively balmy, even though we only maxed out at about 4-5 degrees. In winter 06/07 and 07/08 today would have been classed as a cold day!

It shows how quickly the human body adapts to its natural environment. In heatwaves the body does the same after the initial hit it quickly adapts in most people.

Still the milder weather has also brought in the low murky cloud and dark conditions, many will feel short changed.
