Yep - whoever the lady doing the forecast on Radio 4 this evening is, said this cold weather could last at least another 10 - 12 days.

By the way...-12.6º here.

That ties in with what Francis Wilson said on Sky news weather. Quote. The cold weather will end on either the 19th or 20th of this month.

Almost - she said 'at least' another ten days which is less certain than Mr Wilson is stating.

Some quite amazing differences in the weather over a relatively short distance. Just south of Buxton at about the same altitude as me but in a shallow valley the temp is -8.8c with virutally no wind; here the temp' is -2.8c with a NW wind averaging 17 mph.

Most Misleading Quote this Winter: 'The UK has been only 2 deg warmer than the south pole!' as used repeatedly on tonight's BBC News at 6 o'clock and reiterated in the local forecasts.

Okay if your a layman and know FA about geography, your reaction would be: "Woahhh!!!'.

If your reasonably well-educated you will release that the South Pole is in the Southern Hemisphere and as such its the height of summer over there! Therefore your reaction would be: 'Oh cmon you b*****ds your not fooling me! Talk about stretching the truth :) '.

Nothing lower than -5.7c here but we did have a 20 mph N/NE wind to go with it. If I ever record -12c be sure that the next ice age is imminent.

Now it's -13º

You could be heading for a -18c by morning 00N, provided no filthy breezes develop to mix things up.

this regards to the cold spell. why is it leeds never ever ever gets temperatures like -15? manchester got down to that and what makes leeds for example diffeent. its every cold spell an dit never fails to surprise me. i don't think it ever hardly drops below -5 in spells like this. why does it never get minus double digits. here we are predicted -10 tonght, my guess leeds will be -6 or something. bloody annoying.

As a bit of a posting newbie here i'll take a stab at this. Could get it totally wrong however:-

Many cold spells are associated with winds containing an easterly component. For the really cold minima, snow cover with clear skies and a very gentle east wind (if any at all) help to persuade more of the super cooled air on the pennines to sink down the western slopes and into the Lancashire / Greater Manchester area. I am guessing that those cold temps in Manchester / Stockport et al are a result of the air sinking down from Kinder Scout, Buxton et al.

You could always cross the Pennines and move to Lancashire bad.gif

I think you are now entering the category of dangerously and damagingly cold. Making my -7c here look mild!
