I hear the term ice day banded around - I would have thought this referred to days where the temperature doesn't get above freezing, but it seems it may refer to the mean temperature being below freezing - can anyone confirm what the exact definition is, please

And ice day means the maximum temperature does not exceed -0.1c

(although many definitions say 0c, my understanding that it has to remain below freezing ( 0c )to be an ice day; and most thermometers only measure to the nearest 0.1c)

That's correct, Essan. In the same way that a min' temp' of 0.0c does not count as an air frost or a ground frost.
