I am impressed! Tricky dicky miss fires again!rofl.gif

Is it just a heavy burst or is it increasingly turning to snow?drinks.gif

Who is Tricky dicky?

No snow in Bristol now, http://xcweather.co.uk/ shows rain over S England and temps of 5C, too warm for snow.

I'm confident we'll get snow from tomorrow night onwards.

:yahoo: Why's that, then?

Oh good!

I had a vague paranoia that it might be me - it is an irritating nickname I sometimes get called :yahoo:

Did you think we were blaming you for the lack of snow? Or have you got a guilty conscience about something? :yahoo:

Currently 2.8c (DP 1.6c) :yahoo:

Though after todays's 5 minute flurry at 2.4c (but lower DP) anything could happen!

Still think tomorrow night will be better, if not the 9" we got in Feb

We will have the -5 850 hPa layer well past Bristol from the easterly. Of course it depends if theres any precipitation about but if there is I'm sure it will fall as snow. Could even see some during the day tomorrow if theres any kind of precip about.

It's the layer of air where pressure is 850 millibar and that air temperature will be below -5C (generally thought of as conducive to snow). As long as surface temps and dew points are low enough (say 0c) and there is precip around it should be snow.

I see. Thanks very much for that, kumquat. Here's hoping..... :)

GFS (12z) shows current 850 hPA temps at between 0 and -5C for here probably - 2/-3? , and of course our surface air temps and DP are around 4 and 3.5 respectively. Hence marginal and just a bit of sleet tonight at the most untill the colder air arrives.

Interesting cold spell so far... Going only by forecasts: clear skies, cold and frost were coming end of last week, resulting in more serious cold beginning of this week and the prospect of snow (showers or otherwise) around now, with some sustained substantial cold (for December at least), lasting to the weekend and possible beyond. For this area (glos) Well it ain't happened yet!! I've been outside landscaping for the last 10 days (with a weekend break!) and it's been a bit chilly, fairly rainy, not a lot of sun, one frost and fairly cold with rain/mist today. Very typical December really. Yeah models are still suggesting possible severe cold, perhaps 'proper' snow as remembered from my childhood (I'm 33), but frankly if doesn't come soon, over 2 weeks of the predited cold have already past! Bit frustrated really. I know winters not done, but come weather Gods whats going on! Stop teasing the predition models!!

Rant over - good luck the SW, reckon we need it. smile.gif

Just watching the 18Z - it's a shame that disturbance that runs thru' the S.E. tomorrow wasn't 70 miles west or so, 'cause we'd get a piece of the action!

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
