Afternoon, where has all the snow gone ? Disappearing fast up the mountain.Euro high and lots of sunshine helped lift the temperature in Flachgau,a ski resort down the road from here towards Salzburg to 20.5C on the 17th November. Last week we saw snow down to 800m , now the snow level is above 1800m. Those LR charts do not look good for the start of the ski-ing season here in Katschberg, starts a week on Saturday. I would almost say this is going to be a non-starter. Just days of warm sunshine in the outlook period with hair dryer feed.

Time for a beer to cool me down !

Lets hope its just a slow start for the skiers, been to Austria twice skiing and even when it looks iffy, its usually rescued by a good overnight dump :)

Hope so Dallas. Last year the snow came early and lasted throughout the season. The start will almost certainly be delayed here in this part of Austria and we are fairly high up at 1700m. Blow torch conditions forecast for much of next week in these parts with no sign of Pm or Pc airmass invasion. However, historically a warm November is usually followed by a cold snowy winter. Lets hope so. Where abouts in Austria did you go ?

after early snow through October many resorts were geared to open either last or this weekend-unlikely now for most and its looking like a very late start this year. However, we all know how quickly the Alps in general can change, if not quite overnight, then within 48 hours. So those of us who want to ski or board just have to cross our fingers that once winter starts(!) it will be there for the whole season.

fingers and everything else crossed!

Just seen the local forecast for the weekend..mellow and peaceful with very mild air masses across the Alps with freezing level 3200m. Apart from the snowfall in late October,it has been a very dry and sunny Autumn in the East Tirol and Carinthia regions of Austria..

Morning, yes, another sunny warm day greets us in this part of the Alps. As you can see from the latest picture, the snow line on the distance peaks at around 2000m. Oc isotherm around 3300m today as Tm airmass moves into the region. The present dry conditions and continued forecast lack of colder conditions until later in the week will delay the start of the ski-ing season until the first weekend of December at least. Everyday this week 16C or higher has been recorded somewhere in Austria, especially in the Salzburg region.

Record temperatures in Austria for 19th November recorded in Lower Austria of 21.2 c and that at elevation !

One location in Salzburgerland recorded its warmest 19/11 since 1948. Where has all the snow gone ? At 2000m Level and still disappering. Some hope of cooling down later this week. Hotels in the village have started recieving cancellations for the start of the season next weekend. However, locals confirm that its not unusual to see good snowfall in October, all to melt away in November and return in abundance during December. Last week was a remarkable warm spell.

The start of a new week keeps the very mild snowless conditions. More cloud than last week. Freezing level today 2500m with any snowfall restricted to the highestest peaks in The Hohe Tauren. Warm sector air mass over France today moves over here tomorrow and drys out with freezing level way back up the 3500m. Some warm sunshine expected here tomorrow !

Are the towers on the bottom land hand side on the panoramic photos with post no 7, the same ones as on this link.

A couple of weeks ago I was hoping that the base set down then would last throughout the winter, but the webcams have been rather depressing over the past few weeks. , 2009 certainly is the slowest start to the season for many years, when was the last start as bad as this. Even looking into FI, the freezing levels charts are showing far too much across the Alps.

Yes, they are Julian. The twin towers the locals call them and yes they are named Edel and Weiss! They have a lattice wood outer and look like a giant cone. The top suites that have a 360 degree view cost over 500,000 euro to purchase. All apartments can be rented out. My place on that picture is about a third of the way up on the main right hand piste. There is a road into the main village or you can ski .

The worst start here for a least 10 years.

A light covering on snow overnight, but back into the warmer air flow for at least the next 48hours. Lifts were due to open today but season will have to be put back to next weekend at least. Local forecast is for colder conditions from mid-week, hopefully with a enough snowfall to make a base. This reocurring pump of warm air in these parts is now becoming a bore and a nuisance.

Morning all, hair dryer conditions continue with 17C expected in parts of Southern and Eastern Austria today. No snow base here yet. We need 50cm fall of fresh snow to get started.Klagenfurt forecast office expect heavy rainfall to set in tomorrow with a gradual lowering of the snowline which could be down to 600m tomorrow in the Voralbourg and West Tyrol. 100km winds forecast for the Salzburg area today.

Parts of Carinthia have had 20% more sunshine this Autumn period than the longer term medium.

We are now desperate for the white stuff. Enough of this hair dryer !
