Forum "frothing" Alerts System

Recommended Posts

Introduction

In order to help the team in busy periods we have devised a status threat monitor that represents the likelihood of 'winter froth' appearing on the forum.

Winter frothing is defined as 'a predisposition to always post about the possibilities of cool or cold weather in the form of frost, sleet, snow and ice no matter how remote, how far into the future and more importantly, how unlikely' (from "Winter terms and definitions", 2009 'SATSIGS' publications, available by mail order from JML).

In the same publication, Winter frothers are described as 'mostly harmless' and are entertaining to deal with in terms of objectivity and science.

Threat levels

There are five levels of threat:

critical - a period of 'winter frothing' is expected imminently colour dark blue

severe - a period of 'winter frothing' is highly likely colour light blue

substantial - a period of 'winter frothing' is a strong possibility colour green

moderate - a period of 'winter frothing' is possible but not likely colour orange

low - a period of 'winter frothing' is unlikely colour red

We hope the new system and the explanation above enhances your enjoyment of the forum over the coming months which appear to be quite exciting*.

*This is what the book describes as an implied winter froth which more advanced students of the subject may have spotted. :shok::rolleyes:

We've traditionally always had a SATSIGS (Sod All The Science It's Gonna Snow) thread, so just introducing one for this year's season

Adam that is a type of 'false symmetry': first most of those members who predict mild weather are not 'ramping' (i.e. indulging in strained and fanciful interpretations of the charts) but are simply realistic, secondly, and therefore, the number of mild rampers is too small to justify an alert system.

Shuggs, thanks for the guide. I cannot recall a time on NW when a 'red alert' would have ever been required; perhaps a repetition of 1974/5, 1988/9 or 1998/9?

regards

ACB

I think 1998/9 would have been at orange or yellow for most of the time, perhaps touching green at times in February, as each month had at least one northerly outbreak plus a few "northerly downgrade" scenarios in mid to late February.

I would be tempted to suggest February 1998 but I think some members are capable of finding cold and snow even when there isn't any in sight! February 1998 did have cold potential out in FI at times.

Beside which the forum could be accused of discriminating against a minority.
