Laptop

Recommended Posts

I currently looking at buying a laptop around the start of November from either Curries, PC world or Comet. (reasons being my school vouchers will only cover one of them) By budget is about 650, i have already seen this one but i was a little unsure about it. I want a powerfull laptop, so a good processor, ram etc.. however i understand i won't get a gaming laptop for that price, but then again i don't really want a gaming laptop, perhaps maybe just to put the odd game on. Some people have tried putting me off Acer laptops, however i currently have one at the moment and the software still runs fine on it, shame i can't say the same about the hardware

Any ideas appreciated :)

well its a difficult thing to answer. simply because one persons bad experience with a product does not make them all bad. the one you show seems pretty much as good as you will get for the money. with a decent spec and with warranty and support you are sure to get a good life out of it. problem is, is that the curries and pc world brands are basically the same as they are both the same company. so if you see a good spec one at curries, get a comparison at pc world and then try to get a discount from either of them i.e will they throw in a free warranty? or a free laptop bag?

i get most of my electricals from comet as the no quibble return policy for good less then 12 months old is great. not sure if that works for IT though. perhaps worth asking.

but no matter what, i suggest you check how long the manufacturer guarantee lasts for. some brands have 12 months, others 24. and if you feel the warranty is worth paying to extend the guarantee then go for it.

by the way Mark. dont forget to check the instore price against the online one. they often differ

things worth looking out for are battery type/life, processor speed and what, if any, software is supplied. oh and blu-ray not just DVD is worth checking on too :)

I have been looking round some sites and i have found this

http://www.pcspecial...&&select=enigma

For £765 i could get

Processor (CPU)

Memory (RAM)

4GB CORSAIR DDR3 1066MHz SODIMM - LIFETIME WARRANTY!

Operating System

Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium 64-bit + Windows 7 Upgrade Voucher (£84)

Bluetooth & Infrared Options

INTEGRATED BLUETOOTH ADAPTER (£7)

Memory - Hard Disk

250GB SERIAL ATA II 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (5,400rpm)

CD/DVD Drive

8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)

Graphics Card

512MB DDR3 ATi RADEON HD 4650 + HDMI & VGA

2nd Graphics Card

NONE

Network Facilities

ONBOARD GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS 802.11N CARD (£18)

Modem / Mobile Broadband

INTEGRATED 56KBPS V92 MODEM

Stand-Alone Monitor

NONE

NONE

Webcam

INTEGRATED 2.0 MEGAPIXEL WEBCAM

When compared to other laptops on PC world this seems a bargain!

The one disadvantage would be the vouchers however with this laptop i can do the 12 month pay option so i should be able to pay it off in time, i would have 3/4 paid off by new year.

Would people think that this could be a good option?

The spec looks pretty good on that (from what I know about computers anyway). I have an ACER laptop and it absolutely brilliant, it a new 4810T with 8 hours battery life and excellent build quality so dont be put off by what people say about ACERs.

Nice laptop but going to be heavy lug around. Acers are fine but comet as a company sux big time so stay well clear.

I would stay well clear of all the big companies like PC World, Currys and Comet, the customer service in these places is terrible (from what ive experienced anyway) and if you want a really good high end computer your better going to a small shop where they will probably be able to customise it to your exact spec.

Thanks for all the info guys, i think i have decided to go with PC specialist as i can get a cheaper laptop with a better spec than the main stream stores. I also like the idea of being able to choose exactly what i want from my laptop :)

Just an update

I have now got myself a new laptop (Acer 7738G) So far so good. Sound and graphics are really good, the 2.2GHz is also fast with 4GB DDR3 ram. The 1GB dedicated graphics is an added bonus! Went to curries in the end with my school vouchers

Thanks for all the advise guys. Was useful

Owning Vista is certainly not a pleasure Mark!

Vista feels like something inside your computer stealing 90% of your RAM so you can't run anything else - I think that was Microsofts idea so we wouldn't use their competitors software.

I've heard good things about Windows 7 but rather then try and upgrade Vista which would almost certainly not be as clean cut as they suggest I simply formatted my HD (after full backup) and shoved XP Professional on there...XPs best operating system out perhaps aside from 7.
