A spokeswoman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center told BNO News that a 13.1 foot (4 meter) tsunami had hit the harbor of Pago Pago on American Samoa
A witness told Radio New Zealand that villages on the south-east coast of Samoa's Upolu had been flattened by the earthquake and that police were moving people to higher ground. It also said that a 10 foot (3 meter) tsunami struck its coast,

Luckily these places have tsunami warning systems in place compared to the indian ocean.

Hope its not as severe and any damage minimal.....

very little about it on american news, considering american samoa has been hit badly and near the epicentre and it has a population of 250,000.....

Alerts are being sounded in some areas of New Zealand as a potential one-metre tsunami heads to the country in the wake of the 8.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Samoa early this morning.

The epicentre of the quake was 190 km southwest of the islands, at a depth of 33 km, at 6.48am (NZ time).

Waikato's regional council is urging residents in low-lying areas of the Coromandel coast to move to higher ground because of a potential one-metre high tsunami due to hit at approximately 9.45am on Wednesday.

Adam Munroe from the council says local evacuations are being carried out and sirens are sounding.

Fire service staff have been driving around urging residents to move, and harbourmasters are being told by Environment Waikato not to move on the water.

Bay of Plenty Civil Defence is advising people not to visit beaches and to leave low lying coastal areas immediately.

The Hawke's Bay Emergency Controller says there may be a one-metre wave at East Cape about 10.22 am.

Hawke's Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management is advising all coastal settlements of the risk, and asking public to keep away from beaches. The tsunami will arrive on a low tide but there is still a risk to beach areas and public safety.

Gisborne Civil Defence is also monitoring the situation and says a tsunami would be about one metre high.

Auckland City Council is advising people on Great Barrier Island and Waiheke Island to move to higher ground.

In Nelson and Tasman, people in low lying coastal areas, particularly the Golden Bay coast, Ruby Bay, Mapua, Monaco and the coast road from Nelson to Richmond, are being advised to have a get-away kit ready in case evacuation is necessary.

Civil defence spokesperson David Coetzee does not expect New Zealand to experience the same impact as Samoa, but people in coastal areas, especially on eastern and northern coasts, should be ready to be evacuate promptly if they are told to.

The ministry advises people to listen broadcasts on radio from local civil defence authorities and local emergency services.

Estimated tsunami arrival time

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued estimated initial arrival times of tsunami waves in New Zealand.

A powerful earthquake in the South Pacific hurled massive tsunami waves at the shores of Samoa and American Samoa, flattening villages and sweeping cars and people out to sea, leaving at least 82 dead and dozens missing
Four tsunami waves 15 to 20 feet (4 to 6 meters) high roared ashore on American Samoa, reaching up to a mile (1.6 kilometers) inland, Mike Reynolds, superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa, was quoted as saying by a parks service spokeswoman. He reported dozens of park workers missing.

Twitter BNO is the best place for up to the minute reports, TV Media is absolutely dreadful in today's age (unless a 7.9 quake hit London then it'd be on every channel 24/7 for a week.)

Latest reports are houses/bridges down in Sumatra, fires in Padang and Japan quoting a "possible destructive Tsunami" in the Indian Ocean as a on-going event right now.

26 Earthquakes of 5.0 or greater in the Samoa/Tonga region in the last 24 hrs. Which is pretty amazing and scary really.

That is scary, what I find even more scary is two quakes of that magnitude happening within 24hrs of each other on the same fault line at the same depth in different locations. And as you say many many 5.0+ after shocks.

There have been 37 in that region in the last 24 hours the weakest being 4.7 and it doesnt look like they are stopping or weakening. Is this region volcanic because that amount of regular movement could suggest magma moving - i am only guessing.

Thousands of people were feared trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings following a powerful earthquake in the Indonesian city of Padang, a senior health ministry official said today. Rustam Pakaya, the head of the health ministry's disaster centre, said a hospital near the epicentre had also collapsed. "Jamil hospital collapsed and thousands of people are trapped in the rubble of buildings," Pakaya said.

The magnitude 7.6 quake was centred 32 miles north-west of the city in western Sumatra, said the US geological survey. An earlier quake prompted a tsunami that struck the Pacific islands of Samoa and American Samoa, killing more than 100 people.

Local reports said the Indonesian quake brought down buildings and bridges, damaged houses and started fires. There were no immediate reports of fatalities but several people were reported injured. "A number of hotels in Padang have been destroyed," Rahmat Triyono, of the Indonesian geophysics and meteorology agency was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Post. "Up to now we haven't been able to reach Padang. Communications have been cut."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued an alert but later cancelled it. Tremors from the quake were said to have been felt in Malaysia and Singapore. A 6.2-magnitude aftershock followed the initial quake about 22 minutes later, the meteorological agency said. The earthquake came hours after another quake triggered a tsunami that left at least 100 people dead on the Pacific islands of Samoa and American Samoa.

A resident described the scene to Indonesia's Metro Television. "For now I can't see dead bodies, just collapsed houses. Some half-destroyed, others completely. People are standing around too scared to go back inside. They fear a tsunami. "No help has arrived yet. I can see small children standing around carrying blankets. Some people are looking for relatives but all the lights have gone out completely." Other eyewitness accounts said people fled on to the streets as buildings collapsed.

"Hundreds of houses have been damaged along the road," Reuters quoted a witness as saying. "There are some fires, bridges are cut and there is extreme panic here because water pipes are broken and there is flooding in the streets." Padang, a city of 900,000 people, sits on one of the world's most active faultlines along the "ring of fire", where the Indo-Australia plate and the Eurasia tectonic plate grind together to cause frequent tremors and, occasionally, large earthquakes.

The same faultline caused the 2004 tsunami in which 232,000 people died in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and other countries across the Indian Ocean. "Padang sits right in front of the area with the greatest potential for an 8.9 magnitude earthquake," Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, a geologist at the Indonesian Science Institute, said earlier this year. "The entire city could drown in a tsunami triggered by such a quake,." he added.
