Not an issue with the NW 5min radar but more to do with the new regional 1 million pound radar at

High Moorsley near Sunderland, for a few days now the radar has shown precip(even when clear) over us but the shape and movement doesn't really alter, i wonder if they are tweaking with it as it looks like an issue with the angle (azimuth) and could it be to low and its hitting the tops of the hills around there..?

Hers a few snap shots of NW radar from yesterday 15:10 yesterday.

6 hours later still there..

Then around 2:30am it disappeared only to return at 04:10 but much bigger..!!

09:10 this morning little change.

The very small bright echo is pretty roughly the site of the radar thats been on the radar for months now..I've scanned the net for possible answers but found nothing, has anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

Paul.

Typical of the North East, does anything operate correctly here?(thats what they get for building it in Sunderland)..!!! B) .. Thanks Paul i'm interested in what the Met O have say and to see if a solution can be found.

Hi Paul, any news from the meto at all? ... Ive been doing a little investigating over the last week

and ive come to the conclusion that this may be 'ground clutter'. Most of this can be removed using a 'clutter' filter but unfortunately the filter has to be switched to the off position when ppn is mixed with

the anaprop, it looks like the filter has been applied over the last week as ppn seems to just vanish as it

approaches then the anaprop will appear along with the ppn. I'm now able to distinguish the ppn from the

anaprop but it is still a bit of a nuisance...What an enigma this is, shame all the 'boffins' cant find a solution

to this problem that has plagued forecasters since the introduction of the weather radar.

I wonder if the mast was erected higher could ease/solve the anomally.??

Cheers Paul.

Looks like the anaprop was removed again yesterday pm, so hopefully they'll be able to keep it out of the data now

When viewing the radar on several days recently, including today, the 10.10 slide is inaccurate and shows rainfall from another day (not sure which day though).

On the subject of rainfall radar. Excellent as the NW radar is, with the post code zoom etc, I seem to remember some time ago talk of having the same radar as an overlay on map, as opposed to the current rectangle with a few significant population centres represented.

I wondered if this was still ongoing as it would be a major step forward and would do away with having to enter various different postcodes to see just where that vicious looking shower has got to or where the front edge of the snow is.

I know it's possible to work this out roughly with the current system, and I'm not decrying it in the least, but I do love my accuracy and a map overlay would be the piece de resistance.

Yes this is definitely something we're planning and have been doing some work on - no eta on it as yet as it's quite a major job but we're on the case!
