Just watched an interesting documentary on national geographic about the earths magnetic field. According to the documentary earths magnetic field is in decline and there is an anomaly over the southern atlantic where the field is at its weakest and seems to be reversed in that area. All this they say could be a sign of a polar reversal of the earths magnetic field happening sometime soon. The last reversal was 780,000 yrs ago and in the last 20,000,000 yrs there has been 18,000 reversals. In 2010 3 satellites will be sent a few hunderd miles above the earth to moniter the magnetic field and to help forecast when the next reversal is due. Interesting stuff.

Wikipedia is maybe not always the best reference but it can often be a good place to start:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversal

The South Atlantic Anomaly is the region being referred to in that documentary:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Atlantic_Anomaly

The magnetic reversals (which are roughly parallel and symmetrical on either side of the mid-Atlantic ridge) can be seen by the alignments of magnetic minerals in the rocks of the seabed, and are one of the 'proofs' that the Atlantic is actually spreading (getting wider).

Was this the Horizon from about 6 years ago, or a new one with new evidence? As far as I can remember, magnetic reversals don't happen as often as the figures you've quoted suggest. Yes, one is overdue, according to the law of averages, but there's no saying whether it will happen over the next 3,000 years or over 10,000 years 100,000 years into the future.

Why does everything have to happen in 2012.

Pole Reversal, super storms, end of the world according to the Inca calendar etc etc.....

The 2012 thing may be a miss calculation by the Mayans, actually Jupiter's Perihelion is 2011 March 17 normally the solar max is right after that. Cycle 23 started earlier for what ever reason, but normally the solar max is after perihelion of Jupiter.

There must some limiting factor in the length of the solar cycle, something that limits the duration of the cycle that could be the reason for the long minimum. Then Jupiter will be 400 percent closer to the Sun that a normal perihelion, but Earth will be closer to Jupiter at the same time.

Now if you look at 2012 December 21 you will see an alignment that is indicative of a cme and within the time frame of the new moon one might also expect a large earthquake. It looks like the intercept will miss the earth by a large margin and there will be no traverse pull so there might not be a magnitude 8 or 9 quake.

Nostradamus had the technology to compute all that.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
