I received an extrememly polite request from the Shiny Bottomed 1 this morning... he wanted a thread to discuss Belu Water, which is, apparently, a compostable bottle made of corn. Of course I obliged.

Sometimes I think I'm just too lovely.

Indeed. I saw this bottle yesterday, and couldnt believe it.

But it does beg the question, if one company can do it, why cant all?

At a rough guess, i'm guessing cost is going to be the biggest implication?

From that point though, a classic, and recent, example of this working, is the switch from conventional light bulbs to energy saving. The later more expensive, but soon to be the only bulb available.

The only real 'green' issue I see is the fact that more crops would need to be used to produce the bottles.

The question is, do they need 'fresh' corn to produce the bottle, or is it produced using waste products from the corn?

If the later, then it should be environmentally friendly enough.

I just think its a classic example of innovation.

I also think it shows us what can be done if we research enough into these materials.

I mean. Imagine the possibilities?

i think the technology has been around for a while, my suspicions are that the oil companies probably squash such research and development as it reduces their profits.

i noticed that last weekend, Morrisons were selling 5 energy saving bulbs for 50p. yep 50p!! so perhaps, given time, retailers will start reducing the cost of the "greener" alternative goods.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
