What is going on there currently.

Endless Cocos quakes!

New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811–12 https://www.britannica.com/event/New-Madrid-earthquakes-of-1811-1812 Ground shaking was felt as far away as Canada in the north and the Gulf Coast in the south. Eyewitness accounts noted that the shaking rang church bells as far away as Boston, Massachusetts, and brought down chimneys in Cincinnati, Ohio [and from another] Summary of 1811-1812 New Madrid Earthquakes Sequence https://www.usgs.gov/programs/earthquake-hazards/science/summary-1811-1812-new-madrid-earthquakes-sequence They were by far the largest east of the Rocky Mountains in the U.S. and Canada. The area of strong shaking associated with these shocks is two to three times as large as that of the 1964 Alaska earthquake and 10 times as large as that of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Gone are the days when the New Madrid rupture watchers were wondering what part of the Cocos Plate would fracture. They all did. From the Rivera platelet at the NW corner to the fracture point at Tehuantepec and the platelet formed by this fracture point along the coastline down toward Guatemala.

A  huge 7.3-magnitude earthquake has hit Fukushima, Japan - triggering a tsunami warning as tremors were felt as far away as Tokyo.

Terrified witnesses have said buildings were left shaking following what felt like two quakes, with the second lasting for around two minutes.

Parts of the Japanese capital have endured power outages as a result.

It is not yet clear if any people were injured following the quake, or the scale of damage caused.

From a seismic  monitoring site it would seem there were two earthquakes about 2 minutes apart. The first was 6.5 at Lat 37.67 Long 141.67 and the second 7.3 at Lat 37.70 Long 141.59, very close together. They were at different depths.

Interesting phenomenon called "Earthquake Lights"  related to this quake and others. Been reading up on it never heard of it before but saw a video of it too. Basically a correlation between the stress on the tectonic plates and the ionised particles in the atmosphere? But seems this strange phenomenon is still pretty much a mystery. Can any one else shed some more light (excuse the pun) on this phenomenon?

Yes, loads of local Farcebook reports of people feeling the earth move!   I didn’t feel anything myself but the cats were chasing around a bit and they are far more sensitive to these things than us mere humans.

Didn't feel anything here although we're more on firmer Gritstone layers than the sandstone of Shropshire & Cheshire, still interesting nonetheless as only yesterday I was thinking back to the 2008 Market Rasen quake (M5.2) where the house was making all kinds of noises for a few seconds as the P-Waves travelled through.

An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale rocked parts of the Midlands as residents in Shropshire, Staffordshire and Gloucestershire report their houses 'shaking' at 3.36pm today.

Major plate shift due to global warming, high SST and too many folks stood in South East England. It could have been worse if the Paddington trains had been running.

It does broker the question , how long before the next (overdue) San Andreas fault quake.

I believe as the folk move north from the S/E of England the pressure may reduce slightly as the sandwich at Paddington is eased,

'Explosion' and 'loud bang' wakes people across Merseyside...

Can t blame this on fracking..

Sounds quite rude too...

I saw this earlier kots of gas leaks..natural..

Detling, UK

Residents reported smelling gas on Hockers Ln. on Wednesday. SGN engineers arrived but could not immediately identify the location of the leak and, after turning off the supply to the high pressure gas main beneath the road, they began digging exploratory holes, which required closing the road that connects Bearsted with Detling.

The company was unable to say how long the work would take because they haven't yet identified the problem. Once identified, repairs could take a few days to a week. A resident said it was the fourth gas leak on the road so far this year.
