Somebody just said to me there had been an earthquake in Newton Abbot today, can't say i felt anything at work Posted Image.

I was a few miles east of Moretonhampstead and we both heard it (clearly) and felt it (just). A very loud boom it was.

Reports on the BGS site.

They have narrowed it down to a 7.2 now, I hope it is not one of those fore shocks, like sometimes happens especially recently. Tsunami risk zone, there has been some very big ones up there in the past. Land of the "Deepest Catch" on TV.

The Pacific plate is subducting the North American plate by 70 to 80 mm a year!!

the reason for pointing out Alaska is this is obviously to do with plate movement.

there are no volcano warnings out.Lets hope the plates settle down and do not

lead to a big quake. See link below to see what the last big quake did to the area.

If Campi Flegrei went off "at full power" as it were, we'd definitely be in for some cold weather. Although the site says it was the same size as Tambora in 1815 (which is true in the sense they were both VEI 7), Campi Flegrei's eruption about 37kya was actaully 4-5 times larger (The VEI scale is logarithmic which means you can have eruptions up to 9.9 times larger within the same category, and when you're dealing with hundreds of cubic kilometers it makes a hell of a lot of difference.) Also very well worth pointing out that volcanoes that can produce very large eruptions, like Campi Flegrei and Yellowstone, are much more likely to have much smaller eruptions as well in between the larger caldera forming events.

Hi Paranoid

interesting information regarding this

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1342820/Vesuviuss-big-daddy-supervolcano-Campi-Flegrei-near-Naples-threatens-Europe.html

and they are thinking about drilling into it :cc_confused:

http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2011-01/what-could-possibly-go-wrong-deep-drilling-supervolcano

the thing that is odd about the earthquakes here is that RSOE do not show the earthquakes

on their earthquake list but show them on the supervolcano list.

You will not see this activity showing on any other sites

Aye, i looked on the USGS website and nothing had shown up. Wonder if there's an equivalent of the Icelandic Met Office for Italy that monitors seismic activity.

I'm always very skeptical of what i read in the Daily Mail and other tabloids. Although the issue at hand is usually correct, they usually blow it out of all proportion so they can make sensationalist headlines because those sell well. I highly doubt it would wipe out all life in Europe, although the potential effects on climates would certainly put a downer on your day to say the least. Additionally, the people drilling it are scientists who, i should hope, are knowledgeable enough in their field to not go poking it if they knew that might set it off :p.
