15.1 km down. Risk of surface damage is high in a fairly localised region according to the underlying geology

Yes, unfortunately they took the very worst case scenario from a study (one entire side of the island goes in a single slip) and then presented it as if La Palma was teetering on the edge of collapse.  Volcanic islands and volcanoes in general are inherently unstable - take a look at any of them on google earth and it's  obvious that there have been large landslides on the majority and so a risk will exist, but the whole La Palma taking out the US east coast should be taken with a large pinch of salt.

Edit - if memory serves, i think the episode was called mega tusami?

Problem is the canary island volcanoes are weak stratovolcanos ,many layers of pumice, tefra and lava held together by the dykes in between, the only reason Tiede hasn't collapsed is because it primarily sits on the old scarp wall of an ancient shield volcano so it's possible Cumbre vieja could collapse.

23 days now without a M6+ quake breaking a 31 year record, if we still haven't seen one in 12 more days will be 35 year record, hopefully pressure isn't building on one of the plates somewhere in the world. Myanmar quake came close last night / this morning but was revised down to M5.5.

A tsunami alert has been issued after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Alaska in the US.

It hit some 300km south-east of Kodiak at a depth of 10km at 00:31 (09:31 GMT), the US Geological Survey said.

The US National Weather Service said a warning was in effect for the coasts of British Columbia and Alaska, while the US west coast is on tsunami watch.

Officials in Anchorage warned coastal areas, saying there was "extraordinary threat to life or property".

The alert told people to seek refuge on higher ground in affected areas.
