A powerful earthquake of 7.7 magnitude has killed at least 45 people in a remote area of south-west Pakistan, local officials say.

............................Pakistani media is also reporting the emergence of a new island off the coast of Gwadar as a result of the earthquake.

Local police official Moazzam Jah told Geo TV the island - which reportedly has an altitude of 20 to 40 feet and width around 100 feet - emerged about half a mile away from the edge of the coastline.

Looks like this may be a mud volcano, there are a number of them on and off the coast of malan.

Some homes crumbled and a tsunami warning was issued after a 7.0 earthquake struck just off Peru’s southern coast. The impact caused buildings in the Peruvian capital, Lima, to shake, despite the city being 480 kilometers away.

“Earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometers of the earthquake epicenters,†the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement. The center advised authorities to act appropriately.

The quake struck just 80 kilometers from the nearest Peruvian city, Acari, according to the US Geological Survey, with its epicenter at a depth of 33 kilometers. The quake had originally been measured at a magnitude of 6.8.

While no deaths or injuries were immediately reported, homes in the province of Caraveli in Arequipa crumbled in the shock.

“Houses have fallen, walls have fallen, especially those made out of adobe…but there has been no report of a loss of human life,†Santiago Neyra, a town mayor in the region, told RPP radio.

A hill reportedly started collapsing in the area, a resident told the station, blocking a highway.

Heavy earthquakes in Peru are a fairly common occurrence as the country lies between two tectonic plates. The most catastrophic in recent years was the 2001 southern Peru earthquake (measuring 8.4), which killed 75 people, 26 of whom died in a subsequent tsunami.

67underwater landslides found off the Maltese Islands

Posted Image

Seafloor depth map of the largest submarine landslide discovered (red is shallow and blue is deep)

A high concentration of submarine landslides have been documented from an area of 370 square kilometres of seafloor in the north-east of Marsaxlokk. The discovery was made using advanced seafloor exploration techniques and reported in a study led by Dr Aaron Micallef, a marine geologist at the Department of Physics, University of Malta.

The 67 submarine landslides have an area of some 18 km, which is equivalent to about five times the size of the island of Comino. They occur on very gentle slopes and have formed cliffs that are up to 50 m in height. Some of the landslides were powerful enough to erode through extensive rock walls.

The University said submarine landslides constitute a major hazard to seabed infrastructure, such as pipelines and cables, and are also a potential source of tsunamis.

Hi John, would you call this recent earthquake in south-west Pakistan an after shock from the greater earthquake or is it a unique quake? Also, would value your view of the 'mud volcano' which erupted due to the earlier larger Pakistan earthquake. I have read that the 'mud volcano' might actually be caused by Methane released from the Earthquake.

Thank you Posted Image

hi snowkissed

have a read of the link below

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-26/pakistan-earthquake-creates-new-island3a-why-and-how3f/4983214

probably the easiest and best explanation i have seen

re the 2nd quake

as it is so close to awaran i would call that an aftershock

this is fairly normal to see after such a big main quake

hope that helps

The death toll from an earthquake in Balochistan has reached 515, a provincial official said Friday, as insurgent attacks threaten relief efforts and survivors complain of lack of shelter from the scorching sun. Babar Yaqoob, the Chief Secretary of Balochistan, gave the updated death toll as he toured the destroyed region of Awaran, where the 7.7 magnitude quake struck on Tuesday. A 6.8 magnitude aftershock jolted the same region on Saturday, bringing down more buildings amid ongoing search and rescue efforts. Local officials said by telephone it was likely the second quake had caused more deaths. Bodies are still being discovered in houses whose mud walls and wooden roof beams had collapsed. In Labash village near Awaran, more than half of the 3,000 houses have collapsed and those still standing have wide cracks. "Everywhere we go people are asking for tents," legislator Abdul Qadeer Baloch said. The arid area is also a stronghold of separatist Baluch insurgents, who have twice shot at helicopters carrying military officials in charge of responding to the disaster. On Thursday, two rockets narrowly missed the helicopter carrying the general in charge of the National Disaster Management Agency and on Friday shots were fired at two helicopters carrying aid, the military said. "There is a law and order situation here and other hurdles but despite everything, we will get to every last person," said Lt. Gen. Nasir Janjua, the highest ranking military official in the province. Aid must travel by pitted roads that cut through mountains held by the insurgents.

Balochistan quake: toll jumps to 825

The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that devastated an impoverished region of Balochistan has climbed to 825, National Disaster Management Authority said on Tuesday.
More than 30 villages, containing some 20,000 homes, were flattened across 15,400 square miles of the remote Balochistan region.
Dozens of bodies are being recovered every day from mud homes whose walls and beams have been reduced to dust and rubble.
Conditions are desperate among the survivors and many are going without food, water and shelter, having lost everything in the quake.
So far, no relief camp has been established Mashkay, Gashgor and Malar areas where quack victims waiting for government help under open skies.
Baloch rebel militant group’s attacks on security forces disturbed rescue operation in quake-hit areas of restive province.
According to PDMA, rescue teams will be sent to the affected areas only after security clearance.
The quake is Pakistan s deadliest since the Kashmir tremor of 2005 which killed 73,000. The toll is expected to rise further as rescue teams dig through the rubble of countless flattened mud-brick homes
