The number of aftershocks is surprising.

One of this afternoon's aftershocks (4.5+) appears to have been more widely felt.

Hi JP

The authorities certainly seem to think that everything is now just aftershocks, so presumably none will be bigger than the main quake. I can quite see why your sister is concerned, though.

A few reports on Facebook and Twitter reporting yet another earthquake in North West Wales tonight. Aftershock of the one that hit them a month ago I wonder?

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake which hit the Indonesian province of Aceh on Tuesday killed at least one person, injured dozens and destroyed buildings, sparking panic in a region devastated by the quake-triggered tsunami of 2004. The quake struck inland at 0737 GMT at a depth of just 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) in the mountainous Bener Meriah district in the heart of Aceh, the US Geological Survey said. Houses collapsed in the district, some 320 kilometres (200 miles) from the provincial capital Banda Aceh. "A child died when a wall collapsed," Ema Suryani, a doctor at a health clinic in Lampahan city. "We have received around 50 people with injuries suffered when the walls of their houses collapsed," added the doctor. "The injuries vary from open wounds to broken bones." Injured people had been transported from several affected villages in two trucks, she said. People ran outside in panic in Banda Aceh as the quake shook houses for around one minute. In April last year an 8.6-magnitude quake struck 431 kilometres off Banda Aceh, prompting an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami alert. Five people died and seven were injured in Aceh in the quake and following aftershocks.

Strong very dangerous earthquake below Lake Albert Region (DR Congo and Uganda)

http://earthquake-report.com/2013/07/03/strong-earthquake-lake-albert-region-congo-on-july-3-2013/

some fairly large aftershocks reported

just for information

Volcanism[edit]

The region shows much evidence of volcanic activity in the last 5000 years. The Katwe-Kikorongo and Bunyaruguru Volcanic Fields, with extensive cones and craters, lie either side of the Kazinga Channel on the north-west shore of the lake. It is thought that Lakes George and Edward have been joined as one larger lake in the past, but lava from these fields flowed in and divided it, leaving only the Kazinga Channel as the remnant of the past union. To the south, the May-ya-Moto thermally active volcano lies 30 km away, and the Nyamuragira volcano in the western Virunga Mountains lies 80 km south, but its lava flows have reached the lake in the past.[2]

The Katwe-Kikorongo field features dozens of large craters and cones covering an area of 30 km by 15 km between lakes Edward and George, and includes seven crater lakes. The largest of these, the 2.5-kilometre-long Lake Katwe, occupies a crater 4 km across and is separated from Lake Edward by just 300 m of land. The crater is about 100 m deep, and Lake Katwe's surface is about 40 m lower than Lake Edward's. It is remarkable that the volcanic origin of this area south-east of the Ruwenzoris was not known until reported by G. F. Scott Elliot in 1894. Stanley visited Lake Katwe in 1889 and noted the deep depression, the salinity of the lake, and a spring of sulphurous water nearby, but failed to connect this to volcanism.[3]

The similarly-sized Bunyaruguru field on the other side of the Kazinga Channel contains about 30 crater lakes, some larger than Katwe.

Officials say the death toll from an earthquake that hit Indonesia’s Aceh province earlier this week has reached 30. Soldiers, police and volunteers are searching debris from the earthquake for another 12 people believed missing.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency says the main focus of recovery efforts Thursday would be to search for more victims, assist the injured and provide supplies for those in need.

Nugroho said 275 people were injured and more than 4,300 houses and buildings were damaged in Tuesday’s magnitude-6.1 quake.
