santa cruz update

Aid workers struggled to reach remote, tsunami-ravaged villages in the Solomon Islands on Thursday, as the death toll rose with more bodies found in wrecked homes and debris in the South Pacific island chain. At least nine people, including a child, were killed when a powerful earthquake set off a small tsunami that sent 4 foot, 11-inch waves roaring inland on Santa Cruz Island, in the eastern Solomons, on Wednesday. Around 100 homes across five villages were damaged or destroyed. The waves proved deadly for five elderly villagers and a child who weren't fast enough to outrun the rushing water, said George Herming, a spokesman for the prime minister. Three more bodies were found Thursday, but Herming said details of how those victims died were not immediately available.

Several others are missing and dozens of strong aftershocks were keeping frightened villagers from returning to the coast, Herming said. "People are still scared of going back to their homes because there's nothing left, so they are residing in temporary shelters on higher ground," Herming said. The tsunami was generated by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck near the town of Lata, on Santa Cruz in Temotu, the easternmost province in the Solomons. Disaster officials were en route to the isolated area Thursday after the local airport, which was flooded by the tsunami, was finally cleared of debris.

Eight people were injured in an earthquake near the border area of China's southwestern Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, local authorities said today. The 4.9-magnitude quake, which occurred at 10:46 a.m. yesterday with an epicenter 6 km deep, toppled 72 houses and damaged 949 others in Yunnan's Qiaojia County, the county government said. The injured, including two people in serious condition, have been sent to local hospitals. "Many people ran out of buildings when the quake came, but there was no falling debris. The shopping mall resumed business shortly after," a mall shopper in the county said. Rescue work is underway and local civil affairs authorities have dispatched relief materials such as tents and quilts to the area, the county government said. The quake was followed by two more in Sichuan Province that both registered above magnitude 4. A 4.5-magnitude quake jolted Yibin City, Sichuan Province, at 3:55 p.m., and another 4.7-magnitude quake hit Mianyang City at 10:17 p.m., according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. Casualties and damages from the two quakes are not yet known.

On Monday afternoon the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that a fairly strong earthquake hit eastern Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture, with an early magnitude rating of 6.2. The quake struck at 4:23 PM local time, and the government quickly confirmed that there was no need for a tsunami alert and no reports of serious injuries or damages.
