A powerful earthquake has struck off Turkey's Aegean coast, north of the Greek island of Samos, officials said.

The 7.0 magnitude tremor, about 17km (11 miles) off the coast of western Izmir province, was felt as far away as Athens and Istanbul, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

There was no word on casualties but images from the Turkish city of Izmir showed buildings that had collapsed.

A Tsunami has also hit the Greek island of Samos, with local authorities expecting a second at any time (possible re-bound effect between the mainland and all the islands in the Aegean.)

A major earthquake of magnitude 6.3 has hit Croatia near the capital Zagreb.

Initial reports suggested the tremor caused widespread damage, collapsing roofs, facades and even some entire buildings.

The National Emergency Management Agency have issued a tsunami threat to land and marine areas. Live view from our (evacuated) Northland Marine Research...

Link to live webcam looking east from Bream Bay NZ. I use to live a few miles down the road from here in Waipu

Actually switches to other cameras as well ...all in the general area, including one near Marsden point at the entrance to Whangarei harbour......weather looks great today!
