A huge magnitude 8 earthquake has stuck in northern Peru - the biggest in the world so far this year.

Tremors were felt more than 600 miles away in neighbouring Ecuador, with shocked witnesses describing buildings shaking as a result of the huge quake.

Colombia and Brazil were also affected, experts have confirmed.

Pictures taken in Peru show damage to buildings as a result of the quake, and in capital Lima people ran out of their homes fearing they would collapse.

It happened shortly after 2.40am local time.

The epicentre was in Loreto, in the Amazon Rainforest, around 110 miles east of the regional capital of Moyobamba, and at a depth of around 65 miles.

It is not yet known if there are any casualties.

7.1 hits same area of California.

Oooer, yes......

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has rattled a desert area of Southern California, US meteorologists say, in the biggest tremor to strike in two decades.

It struck at the shallow depth of 0.9km (0.6 miles) and its epicentre was near the city of Ridgecrest, about 240km north-east of Los Angeles.

A 6.4 magnitude quake hit the same region on Thursday at a depth of nearly 11km.

Seismologist Dr Lucy Jones said the quakes could continue.

"This is an earthquake sequence," she said at a press conference. "It will be ongoing."

"Every earthquake makes another earthquake more likely," she added.

You would of thought... earthquakes are releasing a build up of tension or compression forces so there's no particular reason to state one or two quakes means that more are likely.
In California more earthquakes are always likely, there is one somewhere almost every day.

Since the recordings were made just down the road at Glaisdale I guess it might have been felt here but I didn't notice anything despite being awake.
The 2008 Market Rasen one was much bigger (5.2) but further away, it did give us quite a marked jolt followed by gentle shaking for a good minute - enough to rattle items indoors. Anyone not asleep (it was shortly after midnight) ought to have noticed it but local geology can have marked effect either deadening movement or enhancing it..
