Mag 6.4 47 km down, to the west of Crete, followed by several small aftershocks. Doesn't sound as if there's been any serious damage.

A large quake centred offshore northeast of Gisborne shook the East Coast of the North Island on Saturday morning.

The magnitude 6.3 quake, which was 33 kilometres deep, hit at 10.24am.

GNS Science says it was located 910km northeast of Whakatane, with its intensity rated at severe.

However, back on land, its impact was light, according to felt reports on the GNS website.

A series of other strong earthquakes on the eastern side of the North Island were reported on the GNS website around the same time but were later removed after being revised by scientists.

Seismologist Bill Fry told NZ Newswire the quakes were automatically posted online, with the system believing there had been a series of separate quakes, before staff revised it to the single event.

Reykjanes volcano in SW Iceland is located where the Mid Atlantic Ridge emerges onto land. It forms a vast area with many eruptive fissures, lava fields, hot springs and mud pools. In 2000, a large earthquake lowered the water level in Lake Kleifarvatn by 5 metres, but has gradually returned to normal since then.

The death toll from a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the central Philippine island of Bohol on Tuesday rose to 93, as rescuers struggled to reach patients in a collapsed hospital. Centuries-old stone churches crumbled and wide areas were without power.

Bohol police chief Dennis Agustin said 77 of the deaths came from the province. At least 15 others died in nearby Cebu province and another on Siquijor Island.

The quake struck at 8-12 a.m. and was centered about 33 km below Carmen city, where many small buildings collapsed.

Philippines clears roads, counts cost, as quake deaths reach 158

The Philippines started to clear roads blocked by debris on Thursday as it reckoned up the cost of this week's powerful earthquake, with the death toll rising to at least 158. Tens of thousands of residents of Bohol island, which took the brunt of Tuesday's 7.2 magnitude quake, remained living outdoors, for fear of aftershocks bringing down damaged homes.

Authorities have recorded more than 1,200 aftershocks including one of magnitude 5.5. Nearly 17,000 people have yet to return home in the town of Loboc, where the island's second oldest church, the Church of St Peter, was pulverised in the quake. "All of them left their houses because of the strong aftershocks," said Mayor Helen Alaba, who said she had sent out teams of engineers to check if homes were safe.

The national disaster agency said at least 146 of the dead were on Bohol, 630 km (390 miles) south of the capital, Manila. There were 11 deaths on the nearby Cebu islands and another on Siguijor island. The number of injured reached 374, with at least 22 people missing. The government has declared a state of calamity in Cebu and Bohol, where more than 3.4 million people were affected by the quake. Schools remain closed. Damage to infrastructure, mostly roads and bridges, was initially estimated at about 179.15 million pesos ($4.2 million), a public works official said.

The quake caused big landslides and wrecked more than 130 schools and 2,000 houses, completely destroying some, besides damaging 34 bridges and nine main roads. Engineers say at least three bridges in Bohol are structurally unsound and need to be replaced, the public works official said. "To make these roads passable at the soonest, they will need millions here, to the tune of about 700 million pesos," said Bohol governor Edgardo Chatto. "We're not talking of replacements yet."

The transport department estimates restoring Bohol's damaged port of Tagbilaran City would cost about 500 million pesos. After providing food and shelter to victims, restoration of Bohol's centuries-old churches, usually thronged by tourists, would top the government's agenda, Chatto said. Loboc, whose residents depend mainly on tourism for their livelihoods, will need several weeks to recover before it can resume such tourist draws as river cruises and sightings of the world's smallest primate, the tarsier, a tourism official said. Some visitors to Bohol have cancelled reservations, but some hotel operators expect tourist visits to resume soon.

A small tsunami hit Japan Saturday after a powerful and shallow undersea quake, although there were no immediate signs of serious damage and no reports of injuries or deaths. People were warned to stay away from the coast as the tsunami, which was recorded as being as high as 55 centimetres (22 inches) in one place, rolled ashore. There were no new problems at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, reported the operator Tokyo Electric Power. "There have been no rises at (radiation) monitoring posts at Fukushima Daiichi". Workers who had been patrolling wells used to measure underground water evacuated to higher ground after the tremors struck. There were no reported problems at any other nuclear plant, including at Onagawa, the site of the largest wave - 55 centimetres - recorded Saturday. All of Japan's 50 viable reactors are shut down. The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) at 2:10am local time (1710 GMT Friday), 327 kilometres southeast of Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture, according to the US Geological Survey. The USGS intially said its magnitude was 7.5, and issued a green alert on its website, signalling a low probability of deaths or economic losses.
