New research has revealed that some of the West Coast is sandwiched between enormous offshore fault lines and the Alpine Fault, which runs within 40 kilometres of Nelson at its nearest point.

They are the type that generate tsunamis, which is bad news for coastal townships because it is unknown when they will rupture.

National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) scientists today released a report from a two-year mapping project for the West Coast Regional Council, which wanted to assess earthquake and tsunami risk for its coastal communities.

The report identifies 10 active marine faults in a 320-kilometre stretch from Hokitika to Farewell Spit in Golden Bay.

That includes three new faults, informally named the Farewell, Elizabeth and Razorback faults, and divides the 250km-long Cape Foulwind Fault into five segments.

The faults run parallel to the coastline within 30km of land, some only a few kilometres offshore, and vary in length from 10km to the longest, Kongahu Fault, at 120km.

Niwa marine geologist Philip Barnes said yesterday the largest could generate major quakes of magnitude-6.5 to 7.8.

M6.6 - 5km ESE of Ciudad Tecun Uman, Guatemala

2013-09-07 00:13:29 UTC

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usb000jkmw#summary

Guatemala braced for more aftershocks Saturday, a day after a strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the south of the country, leading to power outages and landslides.

Officials said there were some two dozen aftershocks overnight, as they placed the nation on orange alert, one below the highest level red.

The temblor caused cuts in power, interruptions in phone service and landslides, and was felt as far away as neighboring El Salvador and in southern Mexico.

But there were no casualties reported from the quake, which according to US seismologists struck six kilometers (3.7 miles) from Pajapita, Guatemala at a depth of 67.7 kilometers at 0013 GMT Saturday.

Southeastern Mexico was also jolted by at least three aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 6.1 felt near Ciudad Hidalgo, in the state of Chiapas, close to the Guatemalan border.

After the initial quake, residents had already evacuated their homes in several towns in the southern Mexican state while power was lost temporarily in Ciudad Hidalgo.

The Environmental Observatory in San Salvador said the quake was centered on the coast of Guatemala and Mexico, measuring its strength slightly lower at 6.3 on the Richter scale.

And the US Geological Survey said that the quake was just 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Suchiate, a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas, on the border with Guatemala.

A second tremblor, measuring 5.4 in magnitude, occurred seven minutes later, according to the USGS, with its epicenter in the Pacific waters of Guatemala.

Guatemalan President Otto Perez took to Twitter to say authorities were "conducting nationwide monitoring to assess the damage that may have been caused."

Earth's Biggest Deep Earthquake Still a Mystery
By Tia Ghose, Staff Writer | September 19, 2013 02:00pm ET

It's confirmed: The largest deep earthquake ever recorded happened in May off the coast of Russia. But this massive temblor is still a mystery to scientists.

The magnitude-8.3 earthquake occurred on May 24, 2013, in the Sea of Okhotsk, deep within the Earth's mantle. The earthquake, described today (Sept. 19) in the journal Science, is perplexing because seismologists don't understand how massive earthquakes can happen at such depths.

"It's the biggest event we've ever seen," said study co-author Thorne Lay, a seismologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz. "It looks so similar to shallow events, even though it's got 600 kilometers of rock on top of it. It's hard to understand how such an earthquake occurs at all under such huge pressure."

hi swebby

its possible but these lab tests are really assumptions so i would not like to say one way or the other

problem with this is it cannot judge main techtonic plate movements and magma movements

its all very complicated and as some  of these are so deep i would not rule out these staying one of those mysterys

that never really get resolved

BEIJING - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted the junction area of Northwest China's Gansu and Qinghai provinces on Friday morning.

No casualties have been reported so far, according to local authorities.

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit a region between Sunan county, Gansu province, and Menyuan county, Qinghai province, at 5:37 a.m., the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

The epicenter, with a depth of seven km, was determined to be at 37.7 degrees north latitude and 101.5 degrees east longitude, the center said.

The quake was felt strongly in the county seat of Menyuan, said Feng Xiuying, vice director of publicity department of the Menyuan County.

Initial investigation showed no houses have been toppled in the county seat.

People have rushed to a square to take refuge. As the temperature is low, some people took their cars as temporary shelters to keep warm, Feng said.

The quake was also felt in the city of Xining, capital of Qinghai Province, which is about 150 km away from Menyuan county.

No casualties have been reported in the neighboring Gansu Province, said the emergency office of the province.

The quake lasted for a dozen seconds and was felt slightly in Sunan county when most local residents were asleep.

The county has launched an emergency plan and sent quake-relief teams to the affected areas.

Further verification of the impact of the quake is under way.

Strong earthquake kills 30 in remote part of Pakistan

A powerful earthquake hit a remote, impoverished part of western Pakistan on Tuesday, killing at least 30 people and destroying scores of mud houses in a thinly populated area, officials and residents said.

Tremors were felt as far away as the Indian capital of New Delhi, hundreds of miles to the east, where buildings shook, as well as the sprawling port city of Karachi in Pakistan. The United States Geological Survey said a 7.8 magnitude quake had struck 145 miles southeast of Dalbandin in Pakistan's earthquake-prone province of Baluchistan, which borders Iran. Abdul Qadoos, deputy speaker of the Baluchistan assembly, told Reuters 30 people had been killed and at least 30 percent of houses in the impoverished Awaran district had caved in.

In the Baluch regional capital of Quetta, officials said some areas appeared to be badly damaged but it was hard to assess the impact quickly because the locations were so remote. Baluch chief secretary Babar Yaqoob said earlier that 25 people had been injured and that the death toll was expected to increase. A rescue operation had begun in the desert and mountain region which has no major industrial installations. "We are trying to assess the damage," said Baluch Home Secretary Asad Gilani.

Local television reported that helicopters carrying relief supplies had been dispatched to the affected area. The army said it had deployed 200 troops to help deal with the disaster.

A powerful earthquake of 7.7 magnitude has killed at least 45 people in a remote area of south-west Pakistan, local officials say.

It struck at 16:29 local time (11:29 GMT) at a depth of 20km (13 miles), 66km north-east of Awaran in Balochistan province, the United States Geological Survey said.

It was felt as far away as Karachi, Hyderabad, and India's capital, Delhi.

Balochistan is Pakistan's largest but least populated province.

The province is prone to earthquakes, with at least 35 people killed in a 7.8-magnitude tremor that was centred in south-eastern Iran in April.

Mud houses

Awaran deputy commissioner Abdul Rasheed Gogazai and the spokesman of Pakistan's Frontier Corps involved in the rescue effort said at least 45 people had been killed.

A spokesman for Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority, Mirza Kamran Zia, says the death toll is likely to rise.

Many of the casualties were from Labach, on the northern outskirts of Awaran town. There are reports of some people trapped under the rubble of collapsed houses.

Abdul Qadoos, deputy speaker of the Balochistan assembly, told Reuters news agency that at least 30% of houses in Awaran district had collapsed.

Houses are also reported to have caved in in the district of Khuzdar.

Officials in the regional capital, Quetta, said some areas may have suffered serious damage but the remoteness made early assessment impossible.

Pakistani media is also reporting the emergence of a new island off the coast of Gwadar as a result of the earthquake.

Local police official Moazzam Jah told Geo TV the island - which reportedly has an altitude of 20 to 40 feet and width around 100 feet - emerged about half a mile away from the edge of the coastline.

Inevitably as rescue workers get to the remote locations, the death toll is rising:

Pakistan Earthquake Leaves More Than 200 Dead

At least 210 people have died after a powerful earthquake struck southwestern Pakistan, causing hundreds of homes to collapse.

The earthquake, which centred on the thinly populated province of Balochistan, was felt across south Asia. It destroyed around 90% of houses, many of them built from mud, and damaged communications. At a magnitude of 7.7, the quake was so strong it caused a small island to emerge just off the coastline in the Arabian Sea.

There were conflicting reports on the number of casualties, as rescue workers tried to reach those trapped beneath the rubble. Zahid bin Maqsood, the additional home secretary of Balochistan, said 210 people were confirmed dead and 375 injured. However, officials speaking to the AFP news agency said 238 deaths had been confirmed so far, with 208 in the worst affected district of Awaran alone.
eputy commissioner Abdul Rasheed Gogazai said at least 370 people had been injured in the region.

The Pakistan army deployed helicopters and 1,000 soldiers to help with the rescue effort in the huge, earthquake-prone province of deserts and rugged mountains bordering Iran and Afghanistan. The area has only minimal infrastructure, making the evacuation and treatment of those injured by the earthquake more difficult. Jan Muhammad Buledi, a spokesman for the Balochistan government, said: "We are seriously lacking medical facilities and there is no space to treat injured people in the local hospitals."

A convoy of 60 vehicles carrying food, medicines, tents and paramedics is due to arrive in Balochistan after leaving the city of Karachi. The aid will be distributed among the 300,000 people thought to have been affected by the earthquake. They include around 60,000 who live within 50km (31 miles) of the epicentre, southwest of Khuzdar, according to the UN disaster agency.
