The government of Dingxi city in Gansu province, which was hit by quakes with magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.6, gave the figures on a verified social media account. "More than 21,000 buildings were severely damaged and more than 1,200 have collapsed," an official at the provincial earthquake bureau said, adding that 371 aftershocks had been recorded. The tremor set off landslides which buried often crudely constructed local houses. Pictures from the scene showed simple buildings reduced to rubble, with the pieces of corrugated metal scattered over the wreckage. In one location 12 people were buried, the broadcaster quoted a witness as saying. "The rescue work is tough, because the house has been completely buried," the man said. More than 2,000 soldiers, 300 police, 50 medical staff and two helicopters had been sent to the area. "We are rushing to the scene," Dingxi's vice-mayor said, which showed an orange-suited rescue worker riding on a tractor. "The damage to houses made from earth bricks has been severe and many are now unusable," the official said, adding that the number of people buried by the quake was still being estimated. More than 700 rescue workers had arrived at the scene. The US Geological Survey said the initial 5.9-magnitude quake hit at 7:45 am (2345 GMT Sunday) at a depth of just 9.8 kilometres.

A second 5.6-magnitude tremor hit the same region at 9:12 am and was 10.1 kilometres deep, USGS said. A resident of Min county told AFP he was at work at a medicine production plant when the tremor struck and he saw tower blocks shake "ferociously". While Gansu is one of China's more sparsely populated provinces, Dingxi city, which includes the worst-hit counties, has a population of about 2.7 million. Pictures broadcast on state television showed rural villages with rubble-strewn streets. A total of 380 buildings collapsed and thousands were damaged in Zhang county, according to an online post by the Dingxi local government. Communications were cut off in 13 towns in the county, the official Xinhua news agency said, and power was off in some areas. The quake was felt in the provincial capital Lanzhou and as far away as Xian, the capital of the neighbouring province of Shaanxi. People posting on China's hugely popular microblogs expressed sympathy for the victims. Beijing's own China Earthquake Networks Centre put the magnitude of the larger quake at 6.6.

It seems there is quite an intense swarm going on at the Aleutian islands presently. Do you think this may have a knock on effect else where John? Also, do you think we have seen the worst at the Aleutian Islands for now?

Hi snow

As you say quite a swarm there at present. I would say the 6.9 quake was the main but the area can generate 8+ quakes. The area has plenty of volcanoes so there is a chance we may see more volcanic activity. On my phone as away until tomorrow but will update full info then. Re stress on plates its a hard call but will do tomoorow.

Regards

John

An earthquake on Saturday hit a remote part of southwest China near the popular tourist area of Shangri-La, killing five people and injuring 24 more, state media said. The earthquake in Yunnan province on the border with Sichuan province sparked landslides, blocked roads, trapped tourist buses, cut off communications and toppled or damaged tens of thousands of homes in the mountainous area. The driver of a tourist bus died and three tourists were injured as falling rocks smashed into the vehicle, said the official Xinhua news agency. Three other tourist buses were trapped by landslides triggered by the quake and aftershocks, Xinhua said. In total, Xinhua said 24 people including seven tourists were injured. It did not reveal the nationality of the wounded tourists. The 5.8-magnitude quake, which struck at 8:04 am (0004 GMT), was centred on Yunnan's Benzilan town, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. It was about 10 kilometres (six miles) deep. The quake toppled 600 homes and damaged more than 55,000 others, forcing over 9,000 local residents to relocate, Xinhua said. Photos posted online showed soldiers helping to evacuate an injured woman, and damaged vehicles. State television showed clouds of dust rising from landslides on green mountains, and pieces of broken cement that had fallen from buildings. "During the earthquake this morning, the swaying the county felt was relatively severe," Xinhua quoted Liao Wencai, deputy party secretary of Deqin county, as saying. Benzilan is in Deqin county, roughly 60 kilometres from Shangri-La county, which is named after the fictional mountain paradise in the James Hilton novel "Lost Horizon".

A powerful 6.5-magnitude earthquake has struck off eastern Indonesia, the United States Geological Survey said, sending people running from their homes in panic but causing no damage or casualties.

No tsunami warning was issued after the quake struck in waters near the remote Barat Daya islands in Maluku province at 8:52 pm (local time) at a depth of 132 kilometres, the USGS said. It was 411 kilometres east of Atambua and 425 kilometres south of Ambon.

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said some people in southwest parts of Maluku province felt strong shaking for about 10 seconds and ran out of their homes. But Suharjono, an official from the meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency, added: "We have not received any reports of casualties or damage. I don't think there's going to be any significant impact." And Amin Bin Tongke, chief search and rescue official for Maluku province, said: "The quake is in a really remote area, near a cluster of small islands away from cities or towns, with a very small population."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue an alert. Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

Aerial studies ‘may help predict earthquakes’

Scientists from Edinburgh say new aerial studies of the earth’s surface could help predict where earthquakes and landslides may occur. Specialist sensors carried by aeroplanes are being used to take measurements which allow experts to pinpoint areas of land which are changing shape as a result of the earth’s plates moving. A team from Edinburgh University has used the data to investigate how these movements - known as tectonic activity - have impacted on hills in California’s San Andreas Fault. The data reveals how tectonic activity has shifted land up, down and horizontally at a ridge called Dragon’s Back. This type of movement is typically associated with earthquakes, which often occur at the boundaries between plates. The team discovered that the movement of plates determines how sharp a hill’s ridges are and the length and steepness of its slopes. Higher hilltops and steeper slopes are evidence of a “growing†landscape associated with faults.

Signals

The hills were measured using what is known as the LiDAR technique, which uses light pulses to gauge distances, and is more accurate than conventional radar technology, which employs electromagnetic signals. The team says the study could alert scientists to future land shifts and fault activity. Simon Mudd, from Edinburgh University’s School of Geosciences, said: “We are excited by our finding that growing landscapes have a distinct topographic signature that can be detected using improved remote sensing techniques. “In tectonically active regions, such growing landscapes are associated with faults so our findings offer the potential of rapid and cost-effective detection of potentially hazardous areas.â€

The study is published in the latest edition of the journal Science.

1 mag 6 quake japan

6.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tokyo; No Irregularities Reported At Fukushima

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Izu Islands off Japan Wednesday morning, and it was felt some 400 miles away in Tokyo.

Reuters reports that buildings shook throughout the metropolis, though there are no reports of injuries or serious damage as a result of the earthquake, which occurred at 9:18 a.m. local time, approximately 250 miles below the surface of the earth and 390 miles from Tokyo.

Currently, there is some debate over the exact size of the earthquake. Preliminary reports from Japanese broadcaster NHK put the earthquake at 6.9 magnitude, though the United States Geological Survey has rated the earthquake a 6.5 magnitude. According to Reuters, there is no threat of a tsunami affecting Japan’s east coast, and no warning has been issued by the Japanese government.

On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake off Japan’s east coast spawned a tsunami that devastated a large stretch of coast, killed 16,000 people and caused meltdowns at the Fukushimia nuclear plant. In recent weeks, radiation-contaminated water has been leaking from holding tanks and vastly increased radiation around the area. Shortly before the earthquake, Reuters announced that radiation levels at Fukushima had reached their highest point at 2,200 milisieverts, enough to kill an unprotected human in hours.

Soon after the earthquake, Tokyo Electric Power Co. Inc. (TYO:9501), or Tepco, reported that there were no irregularities on the scene.
